Super User burleytog Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 For the second time in five years. Starting tomorrow morning with Chantix . I smoked for 7 years, kicked the habit for 2.5 years, then started again thanks to a chimney (aka co-worker). After 2 years, I'm kicking it to the curb again. I've read a lot of good reviews for Chantix. I just hope I don't get the worst of the side effects. That said, I do see a new trolling motor in my future... Quote
justfishin Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 We give a lot of patients Chantix. It seems to work well. You still have to be in the frame of mind to quit though. No coffee, beer or anything for awhile that gives you that connection to cigs helps. Sunflower seeds or Pumpkin seeds with the shell takes some of the edge off and can be addicting as well. I never go fishing without my Sunflower seeds, lol. Hang in there, it will be well worth it. Drink orange juice or apple juice for awhile in the mornings. After sex, have a lolly pop, lol. ;D Quote
IllinoisBasser Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 I was just going to post a similar thread. I have tried the Nicorette gum, and the patch. I'm going to make a conscious effort this time around and give the patch another try. Let me know how that Chantix works out for you. Is it a pill, a gum or a patch? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 31, 2007 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2007 Pill, see the link in my initial post. JF, I don't drink coffee, so nothing to worry about there. Sex...well, let me just say that having a busy life sucks. :'( Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 I posted on here back in Feb. about me trying to quit skoal. Haven't had a pinch since then to date and still clean. I crave it every fricken day though. I go through life savers and gum like mad and chew my lip but no skoal.. Had chewed for 20+ years too. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 justfishin gave some good advise. Dring OJ or Grape juice or Apple juice in the mornings. The vitamin C will help with the cravings. We are all behind you. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 I wish you lots of luck. I lost both my parents to lung disease due to smoking. Do all you can to kick the habit. I'm in your corner. Good luck Falcon Quote
jdw174 Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 I tried Chantix for 3 months.......the only thing I got out of it was a case of the "Hong Kong Hop" about once a day, just after lunch : For those of you wanting to help with quitting chewing, go to the tobacco shop and get a can of "Bacc Off". It has no tobacco whatsoever, so there's no nicotine. It's made out of flavored tea leaves or peppermint leaves. It definitely helped me drop off the chewing. Haven't dipped since 10/11 last year. The down side is that now I have to quit smoking one of these days > Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 6, 2007 Author Super User Posted August 6, 2007 It is day 6 and the cravings are subsiding. I'm still smoking, but not as much (although I did go through a pack on the water last night). Only had 3 since I got off the water at 7AM. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 17, 2007 Author Super User Posted August 17, 2007 Day 17 Still having the occasional smoke, but they do nothing for me. I smoke mainly out of habit rather than desire. They taste like a turd's ***. Going to be a big challenge spending all night on the water and not having a smoke or 20. Quote
slomoe Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I just quit about 8 months ago. I was in the shower with the hot water on full blast when steam made it very hard for me to breath. I said "thats it" and quit. I've had a smoke or two at the bar with buddies since but don't really crave it anymore. The cravings come mostly from habbit, even though alot has to do with addiction. If you smoke on the water, you should create a new habbit of chewing gum while out, or something. What ever you do, you should really WANT to quit other wise your wasting your time. GOOD LUCK!! Quote
Guest avid Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Good luck Burley NO one knows how tough it is to kick the habit more than me, so I with you all the way. I started smoking steady at about 15. In my 40's I started to try and quit. I won't tell you how many times I tried and failed, but keep at it. I haven't had a cigarette now, in almost 9 years. I feel like Clay dyer "If I can do it.......You can" Good luck dude. avid Quote
Top Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 GOOD LUCK BROTHER!!!!! I quit 1 year 9 months ago... it was the hardest freaking thing I have EVER DONE... I quit cold turkey... I used Smoke Away , I got it from Walmart... gave me gas something serious the kids hated THAT hahahah but in the long run it was worth it... the hardest part for ME with quitting was how to deal with the stress... I found myself just freaking SNAPPING over stupid stuff... but with time it gets better... now I still snap just not over as much of the stupid stuff hahahaha good luck and I have faith in you... just QUIT... no more... not another puff... the quicker you get it in your head that YOU QUIT rather than ARE QUITTING the better... hey if I can stay quit in Iraq... then ANYONE can quit AL Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted August 18, 2007 Super User Posted August 18, 2007 Good luck burley. My dad's been smoking since he was 16. I wish he would even try to quit. DON"T GIVE UP! Quote
Mainlybass Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I too lost my mother to COPD due to her smoking Camel's for over 50 years. I smoked too for years and finally gave it up 2 years ago and am finally rid of that monkey! I used Nicorette and the first week is the hardest. Sometimes you have to use whatever works. For me, I would think about all the reasons I want to quit, for example: when I would find myself out of breath just walking up a couple flights of stairs, or suddenly get a good whiff of how much my car would smell like cigarettes, and the filthy ashtrays, or how much your eyes burn when you get smoke in your eyes, or driving down the road and go to flip the ashes out the window and knock the lit end off and it falls on your carpet while you're driving! And now, with a pack of cigarettes over $5.00 in Maine, it was a very easy decision. Just think how much money you can save for new fishing equipment with the money we WASTE on a product that will eventually KILL US :o MB Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 14, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 14, 2007 3 weeks sans Mr Marlboro. Chewing gum is my new friend. Stopped spending $25 every week and a half on smokes, started spending $10 a week or so on gum. I think I've got two weeks or so of Chantix left. The stuff does work. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 Atta Boy!!! Now if only I could quit the Skoal...... :-[ Quote
stilldontlikeyou Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Hey good luck and I wish you the best!! I quit smoking a year ago. The best thing that helped me beat it, was the fact that after the first week, it was all mental. All compulsions, habits, that made me want to continue. I didn't enjoy it, the taste was horrible, it gave me head aches, smelled bad, and was decreasing my life. I've only got one life, one body, might as well be able to use it long as I can. Sounds corny, but positive thinking works better than gums, patches and etc. for myselfanyway. But do whatever you helps you. And good luck to you again. Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Burley, please continue updating, you are inspiring me. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 14, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 14, 2007 Nothing inspirational about me... :-? I quit 5 years ago, stayed away for a couple of years, then got sucked back in. I was worried the second time would be harder and it was to a certain extent. Hell, I'd fight Cpt. Kirk to the death right now for one...maybe. But then that would be $40 wasted... But thanks Russ... I could stop taking the stuff now, as I forgot to take any yesterday. But I will finish up with what I've got since I'm such a cheap bassturd and hate to waste anything. I will miss the dreams, but I won't miss sleeping 10-12 hours a day. Quote

RWHusker. Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Good Luck Burley! Quit smoking when I got married, of course I still chewed skoal which was my pref. anyway and then quit skoal when my son was born 16 + years ago. Was tough but worth it. Best of luck. GO BIG RED Quote
