Super User Root beer Posted October 5, 2007 Super User Posted October 5, 2007 I was checking my bank account like I alway do, and it said I last used my card to purchase something for 50.00 I was like what? So I thought for minute and relize oh yeah when I bought gas. Then I was like wait a minute I only spend 20 bucks at the pump. I ran out to my car and still had the receipt it says 20.00 on receipt. So why hell is it showing up 20.00 on my receipt and 50.00 on my recent transaction? I'm going to my bank tommrow and get this mess straighten out. Anyone eles had similar problem? Quote
NEBassMan Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Here is your explanation... The $50 is a pre-authorization from your bank account, basically telling the pump that you are good for $50 in gas. Once the merchant sends the info (should be same night) to the bank, it will credit back your account the $30 owed. (My wife works at the bank) Jason Quote
Super User Root beer Posted October 5, 2007 Author Super User Posted October 5, 2007 I use my debit all the time at the pump..last few times it just showed the exact amount. It never showed corrections for anything. You might be right, but if they been correcting my previous statement, they dont show that they made correction. Oh yeah, this purchase was 2 days ago at 7:15am in the morning. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Wawa and Exxon do this all the time in Northern Va and they didn't start to til' sometime last year with me. I never worry about it. Sometimes it can take up to or over a week to clear. If you see the same thing after 5-6 bussiness days then check into it. You should be fine. Quote
mattm Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Their right. Many banks started doing it when gas go so high and it became very easy to put 80.00 to 90.00 dollars in. My bank does 100.00. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 So basically if you dont use that $30 in gas you lose it till someone decides to put it back? Do you gain intrest on loaning someone money since its yours and you do not have it to access in an emergency? Banks charge you for over drafts and loans. How can they legally deduct more then the cost? That whole deal is a shinannagan. Thank God I havent ever used my debit card for that, and now I know I never will. Quote
mattm Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 I don't see a huge problem with it. They are just protecting themselves. I fill up everytime I stop(about 68.00). My brother who is in high school will get 5.00 on ocassion. Your are purchasing something that could be a wide range of money, and they don't really take the money it is just on hold. It has to be done b/c if you put 70.00 in prior to paying and then your card doesn't go through they can't get the gas back. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Thats why you get over draft protection. I don't know about you guys but I don't normally carry cash around (at least that much) with everyplace you go taking cards nowadays and online banking being a huge deal now. I dunno.. I see both sides, but I've had this happen like over 20 times or so and they've never taken the wrong amount out. You could complain to your bank I guess and they could talk to the vendor maybe? I dunno... Quote
huskertko Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 See my credit union does this but only reverse, they only preauthorize for $1 so when I go online to check my running balance it always show higher than what it should be because even though I put $40 of gas in, it is only showing an authorization of $1. It has bit me a time or two, I look to see if I have enough in my account to buy some more fat Ikas, go get them and a day later I am close to being overdrawn because I forgot the gas transaction. Super User burleytog Posted October 6, 2007 Super User Posted October 6, 2007 The banks do not do it, the gas companies do. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Super User Posted October 6, 2007 I went to bank today and show the my gas receipt and stuff, then they made some phone calls and gave me my money back. They said the gas station screwed up. Quote
