Super User Catt Posted September 13, 2007 Super User Posted September 13, 2007 In celebration of the 2nd anniversary Hurricane Rita we get HURRICANE HUMBERTO, thank God it's only a CATEGORY ONE with MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 85 MPH. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 13, 2007 Super User Posted September 13, 2007 Push it north, we need the rain in Tennessee! Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 13, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 13, 2007 You can have it The south east edge of the eye is over head right now, eerie, wind died, rain stopped, and strange looking color to the sky. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 13, 2007 Super User Posted September 13, 2007 I've always wanted to ride out a hurricane. Had a chance with Isabel in 03, but the realty company forced us to evacuate. Got a small taste of it in Williamsburg the day it made landfall. Good thing I didn't stay behind though as I would have been stuck in Kitty Hawk for at least a week. Tropical storms and depressions are fun though. Quote

Tropical storms and depressions are fun though. No offense intended here, but are you insane? :-? I usually try to avoid possible brushes with death and destruction when at all possible. I've been in some pretty nasty storms here in the midwest that have clocked comparable wind speed and intensity of a weak tropical depression or hurricane, and that was freaking nuts. I couldn't imagine trying to weather a storm stronger and much larger than that. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 13, 2007 Super User Posted September 13, 2007 Yes, I'm insane.... :-[ Quote

Super User Long Mike Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 I grew up in South Louisiana and I've ridden out several hurricanes. But I was young like you Burley, and very ignorant, so I thought they were fun. I worked as a Red Cross volunteer, so I was able to witness the misery of those rideing out the storm in shelters and the wholesale destruction of community after community. During hurricane Camille, I was headed for the police station to pick up an evacuee when the wind blew over the City's water tower onto the station, killing all nine people inside. That was bad enough, but what many people fail to realize is that when you ride out a hurricane (assuming you don't get killed in the process) there is nothing left. There is no electricity, water, or phone. All of the streets are blocked with trees and other debris. The fun ends right there, because you are going to spend the next few days, or weeks, in the dark and in the heat. After my third hurricane I finally smartened up and got my Azz out of Dodge. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 Well, to lighten up the conversation... I don't wish the destruction on anyone, but hurricanes are nature's way of distributing heat and moisture around the planet. I am ALL ABOUT a few hurricanes sending some rain up my way, and I AIN"T KIDDING! Bring it on... The forcast here is 1-3". I want a twice that and the same amount next week; and the week after that; and the following week. We need rain! Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 I'm with RW on this one again. We got a pretty good rain last week, but we still need a ton more. Most of the fishing grounds around here are about 8 foot low It's been cloudy the last few days and even sprinkled a little today, but still no rain! Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 Hey Kent, you obviously are desperate for some rain. I sincerely hope you get really hosed by Humberto. Unfortunately, that's about the only thing I can do about controlling the weather. Good Luck! Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 Mickey the Curmudgeon... That's the good thing about hurricanes on the OBX. Not many trees to worry about, just tons of sand and water. Then there is that annoying thing about being just a couple of feet above sea level. Like I said, I got a taste of Isabelle in 03 after we evac'ed to Williamsburg. It was more than enough to bring me to my senses. We've weathered a couple of tropical storms before, they aren't bad. My only gripe was having an 1/8" of salt and sand caked on my truck. They aren't laughing matters, but for some strange morbid reason I enjoy natural disasters, etc. I love being stranded at work by 3' of snow and spending 12 hours in the dark with nothing but a book and a kerosene heater to keep me company. But like I said, I'm insane... :-/ Quote
Super User cart7t Posted September 14, 2007 Super User Posted September 14, 2007 Someone at a FL fishing forum found a link to some 9-11 calls made during Hurricane Ivan when it roared up through Orange Beach/Pensacola. Many were from people up in P-cola bay whose houses were starting to come apart when the storm surge roared up into the bay. Some of those people didn't survive. Those phone calls were rather disturbing and enough to make me change my mind on ever wanting to live right on the coast, regardless of how beautiful it is there. At the very least, riding out a hurricane would never be anything I'd desire to do. Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 14, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 14, 2007 My wife has been with Bell South for 31 years and Ma Bell has closed the office once for Rita. In 22 years of marriage I have drove through every hurricane that has hit Southwest Louisiana including a couple category 3s just to get her to work. Of all the hurricanes to hit us including Audrey the only one I evacuated for was Rita because it was a category 5 the night before it made landfall, it was by all measurements more powerful that Katrina.
