Super User Redlinerobert Posted September 11, 2007 Super User Posted September 11, 2007 Hey guys, I'd like to pick up a great knife, folding would be great but not necessary. If it doesnt fold I'll carry it on a sheath. What do you guys recommend? Something in 5 - 7" is what I am looking for. Under $500 would be ideal. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted September 11, 2007 Super User Posted September 11, 2007 I own Benchmades, Cold Steel, and SOGs. All three brands are wicked, but overall, Benchmade is probably my favorite. All much less expensive than 500, at that pricing, I have no experience. Quote

justfishin Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I was lucky enough to have a old friend about 10 years ago whom sold me two older Bill Moran knives for 225.00 each. These knives are legendary. I have the Elkhorn handled ones. I have seen them on ebay from time to time Robert but, be careful of claims of authenticity. A true Moran ( Sr. ) is a collecters item. His son is still making them. If you can find one they are a truly fine knife. http://www.knifeart.com/inwitbilmorb.html http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/artists/?artist=305 Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I've owned 3 different Kershaw knives and loved them all. My favorite is the thumb flip style with the tanto rocker blade. They retail around $70 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I've got several knives. SOG is my favorite by far. I bought a Seal Pup years ago. The thing is freaking awsome. Holds a razor edge, light, and has great balance. Dont know if your a hunter or not but mine has seen the test of time and animals. Best knife I've ever used. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted September 11, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 11, 2007 Thanks guys. I like the Seal Pup as well, That looks like an excellent knife for the money. The Moran sounds nice, but this particular knife will get some use guys. That knife sounds like something I'd keep for display. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted September 11, 2007 Super User Posted September 11, 2007 I have one of these, awesome knife for the money. http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_store.html?ttl=Columbia%20River%20Knives&srch=eqCATE%20CODEdatarq%3DCRT%26eqKEYWORDdatarq%3Dultima I'll second the rec's for Kershaw, Cold Steel and SOG. I have knives from all of them. All are very well made. The Moran's are indeed legendary. Wish I had one, but they're out of my price range. In the same class are Randall's http://www.randallknives.com/ There are too many choices. Knives are like fishing tackle. Once you get started, they're are always more you just have to have. Cheers, GK Quote
BadKarma42 Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I'm not sure what your primary application will be with the knife, but you can also check out Galls and OMB Express Police Supply. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted September 11, 2007 Super User Posted September 11, 2007 I've used Scrade knives for forty years. I still have my first one in my poket. They hold an edge as well, if not better than my Wusthof kitchen knives. The only sport knife I own that isn't a Schrade is my bowie knife. Falcon Quote
justfishin Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Yes, you are probably right Robert. A Moran might not fit the bill for everyday. Sorry about that but, I have a Kershaw that has been a excellent knife for a lot of years and since you brought in this post you have me looking at knives again. I am interested in the SOG Bi-Polar for a utility knife for outdoors use. Good luck. http://sogknives.com/store/BP-1.html Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted September 11, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 11, 2007 Ok I have narrowed it down to these two knives: Benchmade Osborne Presidio Sog Seal Pup Elite Any thoughts on these guys? Quote
fishbear Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Go with the SOG. You will never regret the decision. I have a SOG TigerShark Bowie... It has bailed me out of trouble a couple of times in the woods and it is one of two tools(the other being my Ruger Redhawk 44 mag.) I never leave home without, when I am enjoying the great outdoors. Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Jose will clear the trees, lol, you want something more compact I think. Something quick and 1 handed for cutting lines and stuff. I like the Presidio, especially in the tanto blade. HERE This one has it all, tanto tip, serrated section easy to deploy, compact for carry comfort-24/7 I carry mine in the small of my back, all day every day. The only time I don't have it is when I travel and I feel naked w/o it I didn't go with the tanto tip this time and really regretted it. As you can see, the tip o this one is already trashed. This one is 4 yrs old though. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted September 12, 2007 Super User Posted September 12, 2007 Ontario makes great WORKING knives also Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I carry mine in the small of my back, all day every day. The only time I don't have it is when I travel and I feel naked w/o it Russ, you may want to check your state laws regarding the carry of knives with blades over 3" in length. I've weighed the options OPTIONS Also, just to expand on the written law, I believe if it is a locking knife like mine, the entire length is what is measured. The actual blade can be 3" if it does not lock. If it locks, it's considered a 7" (or whatever) blade and you're in trouble. I deliver very remote areas, I wouldn't work without it. I use it often for straps, and all kinds of packaging needs too. I just feel better if I ever do run into THAT dog. I've been bit 7 times but never in a circumstance where I needed to harm the animal to escape. I strongly hope that day never comes but I am, at least, prepared if it does. Now, where Robert is going, they have Pumas and lions and tigers and bears, oh my...lol but seriously, for deep woods/rain forest/jungle "protection" I'd rather have something with a trigger. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 12, 2007 Super User Posted September 12, 2007 In your line of work I would be more worried about those with two legs rather than four. :-/ Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted September 12, 2007 Super User Posted September 12, 2007 Robert, I know you like the best of things. I think you should check out Wayne Hensley's knives. He is a longtime family friend of my Brother-in-Law. He makes some of the finest knives in the world. He also makes some great utility knives as well. http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/artists/?artist=274 Hensley, Wayne G. 2924 Glad Dale Drive S.E. Super User Redlinerobert Posted September 12, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 12, 2007 Wow Gene, those are nice! But again I expect to use this knife and most of those look like collectibles. Quote

I'm just not comfortable that deep in the woods w/o anything. A hidden knife gives me a few more ounces of security. Again, hopefully it will only get used for cutting tape, straps, etc Quote
AnthonyRSS Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 For that budget the Chris Reeves Sebenza is supposed to be the cat's meow. I have 0 experience with them other than reading about them from many different sources. I carry several Benchmades and love them. I think they are the best production knife going. I would recommend the 710 And a plain blade. Serrations don't cut well enough to be worth the hassle. And check out www.knifeworks.com There prices are the cheapest I have found and the customer service is excellent. I bought $400 worth of knives there for my groomsmen a couple weeks ago and they went beyond themselves to help me out. Anthony Quote

He made one for my brother in law for Christmas. He told my brother-in-law that if he didn't use it like it was intended that he was going to take it back. It was a beautiful utility knife. It has a stag horn handle with brass accents. My brother-in-law even used it in Iraq. Quote
Zel Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I see you've already narrowed it down, but here is one to take a look at. BOKER EUROFIGHTER DAMASCUS, OVERALL LENGTH: 9.00" open. 5.00" closed.
