FishingBuds Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Anyone believe in the vitamin & Herbal health Now I'm familair with vitamins and have took them for a year period before but, have quit sense. I didn't feel better when I took them but, I noticed that I didn't get a flu bug at all that year. I'm not familiar with taking any herbals :-? So, I've been catching this radio show on the way home from work the past week, its about your natural health and toxins and cleansings and immune system all that stuff : The fella is Rod Burreson and he takes live call ins. Its been getting me to wonder about this stuff :-? His company is ROEX and I'm not promoting this at all but, am wondering if anyone knows about it OR takes vitamins & herbals for health issues and if it has worked for them(any testimonials) He talks about alot of our issues are because of lack of Minerals/vitamins ect. With my allergy/what ever has been going on with me symptoms I've got to educate myself to know where to go with it. I just don't wanna be to dumb about my problem. The Doc has been O.K. but, I've cancelled one test already from him due to me not feeling he's going down the correct path(he wanted to test my lung air volume like I was a smoker) which I never took up. I have a allergy Doc appt. coming up that I have much hope in. This company seems to have alot of stuff to offer for health problems, they've got packages to offer, they even have a allergy pack thats a trip, but, if it works :-? Hmm They offer all kinds of stuff, They put it together fairly well for you to somewhat understand. So again anyone gots anything on this :-? Quote

bassdocktor Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 There is quite a bit of info you can easily find. I'm sure alot of the stuff does work even though many people will say don't even bother. Similar to sports nutrition there are those that will never accept some of it. As far as it being valid many pharmacy colleges are adding a course about herbal supplements/medicines. Quote
Guest avid Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Like most good scams there is a basis of truth to them. Many vitamin and mineral supplements have clinically proven benefits. This encourages the snake oil salesman to make unfounded and often outrageous claims. some of these claims are dangerous if strictly followed. I have a rule of thumb. If it's marketed via infomercial - run, don't walk away from it. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 Do i believe in that crap? NOPE! Quote

bassboy1 Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I take some "all natural" vitamin for "facial blemishes" (zits) As much as I hate to say it, they really do work. But, someday, the only all natural vitamin will be steak and fried chicken. ;D Quote
justfishin Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Fishingbuds, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?holding=jhumlib&otool=jhumlib&term=allergies%20and%20herbal%20medicine&db=PubMed To be specific, pay close attention to #10 and #11. We used this site for my Pharm. classes in college and still use them at work. I recently attended a 2 day seminar in Fairfax Va. concerning Herbal Meds because of the recent climb in patient interest for home cures. My boss, Dr. Andrade, sent me because of the American Medical Journals results concerning the study of the only two long term placebo based clinical studies of two herbs, Valerian Root and St. Johns Wort. Amazingly they both came out at about 86%. Thats good news but, herbs are not regulated as to formula's given out every year. Thats the problem with OTC herbs, along with purity issues. Also, there have been problems with contraindications of herbal meds and Rx meds, especially, blood thinners. Tinctures are more specific but, even they are way beyond the 20% ref baseline. Another problem is with patients with allergies. Testing on OTC herbal meds has lent to the discovery of high pollen contents in some of them. Work with your GP and listen to him. You expressed concern over the COPD and Scratch test. Do them. Lung capacity and your specific problem will give a lot of specifics, to your problem, not just for diagnosis but, as to treatment barriers. Also, don't be afraid of second opinions, I am all about them. Something you might want to research is Immuno Suppression, T and B cell info as well as, environmental causes of allergies. As far as vitamins, your body will only take what it needs. Massive intakes of high potency vit,s will not give you a edge. Vitamin intake is not a bad thing because in this day and age, most of us do not eat well. You might laugh but, I just take a Flintstones vitamin every morning and a tablespoon of honey. Your body will pass what it does not need through urination at the time. A good diet of 3 squares of a balanced meal a day or 4-5 smaller ones if you are pre diabetic or diabetic is a better option. The John Hopkins and Medline sites I gave you are what we use at work. Just trying to help. Quote
FishingBuds Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 Thanks justfishin Looks like some good info you gave me, I plan on sitting down and reading it tonight. I'll get back with ya on it if I got more questions. Just that its sucked a little with this issue(others have it worse I know) Asma is dangerous even to death I'm told and they thought thas was what I have. I also understand that Asma is episodes, just attacks but, this stays with me all day if I don't take Benedrill(antihestamine) for it. My throat tightens up Plus my throat, nose, ears and eye lids itch like crazy sometimes too. I can re-set up a appt. for the air volume thingy but, gut feeling is finding out what the heck I'm allergic to so bad :-? at least thats the symptoms i feel-allergies from HELL > I will also say that what I have read seems you could be playing with death on Herbals Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 My older brother has asma and allergies. I have grown old watching him have asma attacks and reactions to medications, food, pollen, heat, cold, etc. My advice, stick with your doctor until he can get you up to good health, then start thinking about supplements. And if you feel you need to take something, talked to your doctor first. One other thing, I used to be a powerlifter and vitamins and supplements are not for everybody. One thing I did learn from lifting weights is that everybody's metabalism is different. The goal in taking a health aid is to figure out what you personally need and not to let the bottles of pills out there tell you what you think you need. If I had to say what makes you the healthiest when it comes to nutrition, it would have to be a healthy digestive system. If you can keep your colon clear of toxins, your body will respond positively. My brothers doctor thinks that's where his problem with allergies lies (his colon can not digest certian things, only absorb). Quote
justfishin Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Great advice fishtank and RW. From what you are telling me, you really need to get a handle on this possible asthma condition. Yes, it can kill you. I hate to put it that way. I am afraid OTC's are a fix for your present symptoms, not your problem. Get to your MD soon. Let him give you a Spirometry test, Scratch Test, etc. You are going to need to do this in order to get a refer anyway in order for you to see a specialist. You are telling me its asthma but, it can be a number of other things as well. Let the MD put the puzzle together as your symptoms can be a preclude to other problems, as well. Let him make that diagnosis. I won't be posting in here very much anymore but, I still like to read so I will always be here. Feel free to PM me with questions or concerns and I will try to get a answer for you or at least point you in the right direction. Get a appointment ASAP. Quote
FishingBuds Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 Thanks FishTank, intresting on the colon thing and I realize how important that is. Makes me think of some recent issues before this happened. justfishin-yep got a appt. this 17th for a allergy & asma specialist. Quote
