llPa1nll Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I didnt hear anything about this until today. This will surely be a huge News topic for the next few days. Headlines "Nuclear bombs mistakenly flown over USA". A B-52 bomber was mistakenly armed with six nuclear warheads and flown for more than three hours across several states last week. Read more about it here. Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 Wow, this is the first I've heard of it. Do you know what the three states were? Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 Don 't know why you get so scared, there are thousands of people living with nuclear missile silos literally on their backyard or a stone cast from an Air Force base stuffed with those munster sized firecrackers. Quote
Guest avid Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I'm with Raul on this one. Sounds like yet another example of the media making much ado nothing. Not that having planes with nuclear weapons flying over your house is nothing. but trust me.,.....it is definitely nothing new. Part of the "Triad" defense matrix developed by Curtis LeMay to thwart a surprise Soviet nuclear attack was to have 1. Land based movable missles in hardened silos 2. Nuclear armed B-52's in the air above the US and strategic locations around the world 24/7 3. Nuclear armed submarines powerful enough to completely destroy the Soviet Union in the event of an all out surprise nuclear attack. The acronym for the policy was "MAD" or Mutually Assured Destruction. Many people thought it completely insane. One slip of the trigger would end all life on the planet. Indeed there were a couple of close calls. The fly in the ointment is that it worked. We can only hope that the policies devised to deal with the current threat of non nation states determined to annihilate us are equally successful. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 And here we are telling other countries to hault Nuke work and we carry um over us by MISTAKE i mean even though they need to be set off in a office somewhere makes u wonder about other things mistakenly carried BY MILITARY CONTRACTORS on the ROADS funny......... but a wake up call Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 So what's your point? How do y'all think these bombs are moved from one place to another UPS? Quote
Guest avid Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 So what's your point? How do y'all think these bombs are moved from one place to another UPS? Absolutely!!!! Why do their uniforms are brown? Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 So what's your point? How do y'all think these bombs are moved from one place to another UPS? If I were the United States of America government and after having a very bad experience with UPS delivering my GPS unit to the WRONG adress I would seriously think twice 'bout shipping them nukes by UPS, who knows they may deliver them to Iran ........ FEDEX gets my vote, never had any problems with FEDEX. Quote

I have no problem with them flying over my head. It's just the fact that it was a mistake. Mistakes can be extremely deadly, especially if nukes are involved. Quote

Super User cart7t Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 On highway 65 south of I-70 in Missouri, on the way to Truman lake for those of you that go that way, there are several minuteman underground silo's VERY close to the road along there. You can see them as you go down the highway. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 This subject made the NBC news this evening. Apparently it was a major screw-up. The commander in charge of this debacle was relieved of duty. Quote
fishingfourfun Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I forone don't believe its a big deal. They have been moved for many years and even had a plane go down with them aboard. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 I think the point was no one knew till after the fact "Like hey were missing 10 nukes and have no clue where they are " good thing Allah didn't have um we wouldn't be here to type this... BTW to anyone thinking we shouldnt take things too serious WTH are u thinking .I guess they shoulda took the 3 plane to hit the pentagon as a random plane crash too Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 First off the B-52 was loaded with nukes not armed with nukes, the word armed is very misleading and was attached to the article to make it sound worse than it was. Even with bombs onboard the bombs themselves were not armed; another choice of words the liberal media uses to scare the public. Believe me there are more dangerous things being hauled on our highways daily. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I thought they were only supposed to fly over New Jersey ;D Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Pretty sure that plutonium and uranium are not allowed in our air system at UPS....I will check tho, if you like... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 Question: Why make this public? So, a military screw-up, not unlike an everyday occurance in the private sector. No harm/ no foul. Discipline responsible parties INTERNALLY. Why was this released to the media? Perhaps someone's agenda? This "news" is a non-event and should never have been announced or formally confirmed. Quote
Guest avid Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 The commander in charge of this debacle was relieved of duty. Amen Long Mike. When you get to be our age you realize just how important that can be. Another choice of word the liberal media uses to scare the public. Believe me there are more dangerous things being hauled on our highways daily. Why is it that whenever there is a report criticizing the military it's always the "liberal media" that does it. Excuse me Catt, nothing personal but just what is it driving down your highways that is more dangerous than plutonium? Oh. and please tell me it's not the highway leading to lake fork. Mistakes can be extremely deadly, No offense intended hookemdown, but I always kinda chuckle at statements like this. I mean how dead is something before it is EXTREMELY dead? Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 On a side note, I'm still pondering why a US Senator felt the need to pick toilet paper up off the floor of the john..... Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 Avid ever notice those little diamond shaped signs on trucks? They give you a pretty little picture when in reality these chemicals being hauled are corrosive, explosive, toxic, carcinogenic and radioactive chemicals and they are hauled across this nation daily. Keep in mind this bombs were not ARMED with a detonator, they were simply loaded into the bomb bay of a B-52 and at worst if the plane had crashed you would have had a radioactive spill. Quote
