BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted September 3, 2007 BassResource.com Administrator Posted September 3, 2007 While SOME of the incidents reported on that site are legitimate terrorist actions, most of them are not. It seems this site is exaggerating and bloating the reports. For example, here's a few "terror incidents" I grabbed at random: "Authorities said that a pipe bomb destroyed a mailbox Friday night at 31800 Bobritt Road in Bonsall, and that another one still remained" "Police Respond To Suspicious Devices Two Harmless Devices Found" "A woman who lives down the street from the activity says police told neighbors a military canister was found in front of a home." "Suspicious package found at San Francisco fire station not a bomb" A huge majority are simply "suspicious packages" reports - most of which are not terror-related at all. Seems they're reporting anything with the word "bomb" in it. Or here's a good one: Vials of Dangerous Chemicals From Iraq Found at United Nations Offices in NYC Turns out these were samples collected back in '96 by United Nations inspectors that were being delivered to a laboratory for analysis. They just went to the wrong place. Even better: "Residents of 32 housing estates near the Thai capital's Suvarnabhumi international airport agreed Sunday to release balloons into the skies above Thailand's biggest airport in an attempt to disrupt air traffic and hold a major rally at the passenger terminal if officials of Airports of Thailand Pcl (AoT) fail to solve aircraft noise pollution" So.... I don't put a whole lot of credit to a site that's collecting headlines on any and all bomb threats - or even wrong deliveries and balloons - and then classifying them ALL as terrorist activities. Seems extreme to me. We wouldn't have been calling them "terror incidents" back in '98. Let's not start calling them something different now because it's in vogue. Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 I was thinking along the same lines, Glenn. While there are quite a few plausible threats listed there, you have to sift through them and counter refference them with other sources to get to the real truth. Interesting, and scary, site, though... Quote
Guest avid Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 you nailed it Glenn, After I started mousing over the "incidents" and seeing that the US was counting every bomb scare as a terrorist threat, It became pretty evident that whoever created this "assessment" was clearly try to instill fear without foundation. When I noticed that Columbia, the kidnapping and drug capital of the world had NO incidents, it just became laughable. Yo Dan. You handsome devil you. Get rid of that Imus avatar, he's ugly and his hair is way too big. Quote

Super User cart7t Posted September 4, 2007 Super User Posted September 4, 2007 One of those in Canada had Greenpeace members protesting the arrival of a shipment of coal to a plant. Another in Houston has a package of white powdery substance found at a mail processing center. Nothing about what it actually was. A stink bomb going off in a Canon City Colorado library. : Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted September 6, 2007 BassResource.com Administrator Posted September 6, 2007 I need to make something really, really clear here, as a few people have completely misunderstood this thread: Nobody on this thread is in no way whatsoever attempting to minimize the very real threat of terrorism - either on U.S. soil or abroad. The comments are directed soley at the one website above that is attempting to put an extremely broad definition on the term "terrorism" which, in my opinion, is therefore dimishing the very real, devastating terrorist acts happening around the world. Categorizing balloons and stink bombs as "terrorism" waters down what really IS terrorism, which dilutes the real danger we need to be watchful for. Hope that makes sense. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 The New York Yankees have taken over the local minor league team: Now thats an act of terrorism Quote
