You can't be disagreeing with me. I wrote I have no opinion on high end equipment. I have a problem with guys treating equipment as status and trying to steer people to certain brands that they are not asking about nor can afford

Just to clarify.  I didn't really disagree with you on the status thing.  Bass fishing is not a status thing.  I try to stay out of that chit.  That might explain why I am the looser at school, but at least I am a happy looser ;)  What I was saying, was that I feel that certain pieces of expensive equipment do help me.  The Gamakatsu hooks to start, and the sammies in second.

Muddy I'm disagreeing with you for not formulating a disagreeable opinion.

Now that's funny

When I started fishing tournaments seriously it was with an Abu Garcia 5000 on a Heddon Mark Special 5' 6 fiberglass rod pictured below. This setup weighed between 2 to 3 pounds, even at 21 years of age and a carpenter 10 to 12 hours of tournament fishing killed my arms. I thanked God every night for Ben Gay

When Shimano introduced its Bantam 100 and Fenwick introduced its graphite rod I was one of the first in line to buy one regardless of price. It was all about comfort not name brand and yes it did make me a better angler due to the fact I could now fish 10-12 hours with out being wore out.

Does a newbie angler need a $500 rod and a $500 reel to be successful absolutely not; I've caught thousands of bass on Bantam 100s and Lighting rods. The only tool needed to catch bass is your brain

Hey Catt: Is that a rod ferrule right above the reel. where the bonze colored part of the rod meets the handle?

The handle is cast aluminum and the 2 brass colored pieces are anodized aluminum; add to these the weight of the reel and multiply this weight times probably 1,000 to 1,500 cast a day with spinner bait and you'll have an idea of what pressure it would put on your joints.

Each angler should decide his/or her weapon of choice there are many choices and it can be a daunting task to figure out what gear to choose. I have one rodand reel that is balanced well and is a comfotable weight for extended time angling. I have others which I someday hope will break because they are too heavy, too long, or just wear me out. My favorite rod gets the bulk of the fishing while others I use for specialized try this baits. Through my mistakes the next rod I buy I will take the reel to the store with me and find the rod that will balance just right with the reel. A well balanced unit will in my oinion help with the "feel" of the fish striking and help me fish longer. By the balance of the rod i determin this by having the reel mounted I hold the rod where I would normally and it should sit in my hand without riding up or falling down.

To paraphrase redline robert.

"You use a GLoomis rod when you want to be a bassin somebody"

"You use custom made equipment built to your specs, when your ARE a bassin somebody"

Ps.  Muddy owns and uses a custom spiral wrapped Lamiglass stick built for him by a certain Mr. RonAlspster.  - so much for the low end equipment mudster

OH! THAT explains the drought of babes when i first got my licience; 55 chevy( before they were stylish) I t had one windshield wiper, a hole in the exhaust and the front seat had a 2x4 under it to keep it from going backwards. Not one girl ever asked me for a ride, except for my grandmother

Try a 1960 Corvair. Not the hottest car on the road in the early 70's, but parkin sure was fun I'd open up the hood and exclaim Oh no, the engine must have fallen out, we can't go anywhere, so we'll have to stay here for awhile Seems only the blondes fell for that one.

By the way, two of my most utilized baitcast rods this year (and fish catching machines at that) were Quantum Tourney's that I got for $15 each at Walmart at the beginning of the season.

Try a 1963 Red Volkswagon Bug that had been wrecked on the front end....  However, my dad made up for it.  Had to rebuild the motor...  ;D ;D  WE built that motor to Porsche specs...Broke the Speedometer twice,  I went thru a set of back tires in less than  10,000 miles.. Dad took the car away   :o :-[ ;D

As for promoting expensive gear..  I have seen this for years in the gun industry..  A guy would rather not eat for a month or so to buy a 1200.00 Weatherby rifle, than to spend 4-500 on a Remington, Winchester, or Browning that will do exactly the same thing...  or spend 900-1500.00 on a rifle scope when a 400.00 one will suffice just fine.  I never have been one of those guys, and probably never will.  I dont want to own a Ferrari or Hummer.. My Fords do just fine for me, and what I want them to do.  The most expensive rod I own has not seen water in over 5 yrs.  It is a Kunan 9 ft. salmon rod, for drift fishing the rivers in the Pacific Northwest.  I paid 150.00 for it 15 years ago.   Personally, I like BPS rods, especially the ones in the 50-100 dollar range.  They work great, have good sensitivity, and take the abuse I dish out on rods.  I use Abu or low end Shimano reels.

It boils down to personal preference, and how much money YOU can afford or want to pay.
