Father's are an important part of the family, and we should celebrate

their contributions as least one day of the year. The following quotes

are gathered and presented in no particular order, for your inspiration.

1. "That is the thankless position of the father in the family-the

provider for all, and the enemy of all." J. August Strindberg

2. "It is a wise father that knows his own child." William Shakespeare

3. "It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he

was." Anne Sexton

4. "One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters." English Proverb

5. "My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother

would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass." "We're not

raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys."" Harmon Killebrew

6. "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could

hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be

twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."

Mark Twain, "Old Times on the Mississippi" Atlantic Monthly, 1874

7. "There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's

words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it

gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a

cloth that feels like love itself." John Gregory Brown, Decorations in a

Ruined Cemetery, 1994

8. "It would seem that something which means poverty, disorder and

violence every single day should be avoided entirely, but the desire to

beget children is a natural urge." Phyllis Diller

9. "The greatest gift I ever had came from God; I call him Dad!" Author

Unknown

10. "To her the name of father was another name for love." Fanny Fern

11. "My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another

person, he believed in me." Jim Valvano

12. "Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care

about small boys." Anonymous

13. "Sometimes the poorest man leaves his children the richest

inheritance." Ruth E. Renkel

14. "It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he

was." Anne Sexton "Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle

voices call him father!" Lydia M. Child

15. I talk and talk and talk, and I haven't taught people in 50 years

what my father taught by example in one week." Mario Cuomo

16. "One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the

kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God,

Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be." Anonymous

17. "By profession I am a soldier and take pride in that fact. But I am

prouder - infinitely prouder - to be a father. A soldier destroys in

order to build; the father only builds, never destroys. The one has the

potentiality of death; the other embodies creation and life. And while

the hordes of death are mighty, the battalions of life are mightier

still. It is my hope that my son, when I am gone, will remember me not

from the battle field but in the home repeating with him our simple

daily prayer, 'Our Father who art in Heaven" Douglas Macarthur

18. "I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a

father's protection." Sigmund Freud

19. "Father! - to God himself we cannot give a holier name." William

Wordsworth

20. "Henry James once defined life as that predicament which precedes

death, and certainly nobody owes you a debt of honor or gratitude for

getting him into that predicament. But a child does owe his father a

debt, if Dad, having gotten him into this peck of trouble, takes off his

coat and buckles down to the job of showing his son how best to crash

through it." Clarence Budington Kelland

These are all very true I am sixteen and can remember my dad correcting as he still does to some point. What I think is restriction is actually protection from his point of view. He doesn't really like fishing that much right now because he is trying to get things done for the rest of the family so we can all live a happier life but he still takes time out of his busy schedule to go with me when I go fishin on occassion. These trips are some of the most enjoyable trips that I can remember in my recent memory.

Noth :)ing better than a Dad. Mine was a great guy. I could not have asked for a better one, I was lucky. He died on my 21st birthday. The older I get, the more I miss him. I would have really liked him to have met my son and granddaughter. He is the one whom instilled my interest in fishing and used to take me when I was a kid. Great memories.

Oh....yes....my dad.  You can end up arguing with  him throughout the day but he'll still come over and tell you that he loves you before you go to bed. :)

This is the time of the year I miss my Dad the most, they don't make men like him anymore.

He had the best baseball sense i will ever know, we would be watching a game on TV and by the second inning he would notice a pitcher tipping his pitches. Long before McCarver would say anything he say something(around the 6th inning)" This guy is getting tired, they gonna light him up" Next thing you'd here McCarver squealing THAT WENT A MILE< HE REALLY GOT PASTED 8-)

My DAD, an Italian Immigrant, went back to Italy ,as an American soldier and fought his native peoples during WWII, because he was a dedicated American. He left High School, to support his family during the depression, even though he was being scouted by the Dodgers, and never looked back.

He took my Mom ,brother and sister (Oh and me) from an Immigrant slum and got us all through tthe best schools he could afford and got us into a private home in a better hood, all the time we never were made aware of how much we didnt have but were taught to celebrate, and share with others what we did have.He did this by working mostly 7 day weeks inn our family's butcher shop and pizza place.Taking 1/2 days off here and there, usually spent at Ebbets fielld or Shea Stadim

Short Story to let you all know what type of man he was; If someone got caught stealing food in our shop, he would bring them to the back of the store AND OPEN A CHARGE ACCOUNT FOR THEM. HE FELT FROM STARVING DURING THE DEPRESSION, NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO STEAL FOOD. Only 2 of those accounts( out of maybe 2 dozen) were never paid. It was very humbeling watching him do his thing

THAT IS WHO MY DAD WAS and will always be in my heart ;)

My dad died when I was 11 years old.

don't have alot of memories.   Most are ok.

He was pharmacist and owned a drug store in Park slope (that's Brooklyn y'all)

worked 6 days a week, minimum 12 hours a day.

died at age 48 from a heart attack.

Left my mom and us kids nicely provided for.

I would have preferred him.

Sorry to be such a drag,

I truly love hearing all your great "dad" stories.

Hey Dom,

That's a great story about your dad.  I can't agree more that the role of a father is so important in the development of a child.  I think much of the downfall of our country's youth could be prevented if more fathers would step up to the plate and "be the dad".  This post should serve as encouragement to all the dad's on the forum to strive to be the best dad we can be.

Frog,  thanks for sharing these quotes with us.  They are inspiring.

God bless,

My Dad never cared for fishing, but when I was too young to drive he would take me every Saturday morning and drop me at the lake or river, then he'd go to work at his office. Around noon he'd close up shop and pick me up. Sometimes we'd stay and fish together, other times we'd go to the tavern and get a sandwich and a soda. I loved sitting at the bar with my Dad. I felt like big stuff.

Now Dad is 77 and loves to golf every chance he gets. I don't care to golf much these days, but when I make it home I always bring my clubs.

I love that man.

Took a drive up to Manitowoc Wi last Monday and Tuesday to go out fishing with my Dad in lake Michigan.  It was one of those times when on the way back to Chicago on Tuesday night I had to look up and say a big thanks to the guy upstairs.  On Monday the lake was calm, perfect for a day with Dad.  We quit fishing at about noon with 9 salmon in the box.  Went back out Tuesday morning and had the boat on the trailer at 10:30 with 10 fish in the box.  Over the 2 days we caught 19 fish, 6 of them over 15 pounds, every one of which I "made" Dad reel in.  It was one of those days that makes up for 100 of those small minded bickerings that every one of us has had with their fathers.  ( It also made for some happy regulars and cooks at Hooters who got some fillets that were swimming one or 2 days earlier!!!!  Spend the time when you can..........they are hours that can never be replaced
