justfishin Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I have been in the Health Field for a long time now. I have listened to a lot of stuff in these post recently about the results of not taking care of yourself. I know you get tired of listening to Justfishin but, let me say this. Getting older means two thing to watch for. Your metabolism and genetics, bottom line. As we get older our systems slow down. Our livers don't process like it did, our lower GI slows down, etc, etc. I studied the systems, and still do and if you think about everything it takes to run a body for just 10 seconds, it would amaze you. As you get older it slows down. Genetics, or your family history, parents, grandparents, great grandparents lends a big hand to your health. Yes, its not your fault but, its how it is. Seems problems skip a generation so delve into your history of what your elders suffered. Its very likely you will suffer the same things. Not always but, the percentages go up. Bottom line, get a regular checkup. Blood work, is a norm, it can tell you a lot. Glucose levels, white and red blood cell counts, HDL and LDL, as well as overall Cholestorol counts are very important simple, basic run of the mill lab works that can nip a lot of things in the bud. Its easy and simple. As you get older you start, for men, getting a Prostate check, around 50 and a Colonoscopy is a must have. Granted, the insurance companys have made a Colonoscopy a elective and usually don't cover them, unless there is a problem, in which I think is insane but, trust me, its worth the money. A regular overall exam is needed every 3-4 months after 30, as a minumum. If guys like us are in the sun a lot your body needs checked for Melonomas and such. Its all very relative. Just a ramble from me to get you to think a little about your health but.................... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 16, 2007 Super User Posted August 16, 2007 My family line lives a long time. Some of my first memories are those of my Great-Great Grand Parents, one Great-Grandpa and two Great-Grandmas. Anyhow, my Grandpa (mom's side) shared "The Secret to Longevity" with me a few months before he passed on: 1. Drink at least one bottle of fortified wine (Thunderbird) every day. 2. Smoke when you're upright or sitting down, but not laying down. 3. Pay close attention to football, especially the Oklahoma Sooners. 4. Fish whenever you can and when you can't. And most importantly, 5. Avoid exercise at all cost! Quote
justfishin Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 What are you trying to do RW, put me out of a job? Dude, I can't agree on the Thunderbird, its Yuenglings Beer, a shot of Cap't Morgan, Spare Ribs, Crabs, Shimp, Crawdads, Oysters, Clams, Lobster, Scallops, Deer Loin and New York strips done medium that keep me going. Duh !!!! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 16, 2007 Super User Posted August 16, 2007 Well, my Grandmother never had a sip of alcohol in her life (98 years) and didn't allow Grandpa anything but an occasional beer (Schlitz). So, he kept his bottle in a brown paper bag under his football chair (Lazyboy) so she wouldn't know. I had a lot of cousins and when it was just "us boys" Grandpa would give us a sip. Now, I'm tellin' ya, at the age 8, 9 or even 10, that stuff was AWFUL, but we all thought it was a treat! I think that's one of the reasons my Granddad liked fishing and taking his grandkids along. Nobody ever taddled on him. Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Well, I'm no billboard for health, I have my vices but EXERCISE should NEVER be discounted. Has anyone noticed the youth of this country lately????? General rule--Avoid growing a "Dingydo" (that's the medical term for when your belly sticks out further than your dingy do) : ;D Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 17, 2007 Super User Posted August 17, 2007 I've been meaning to have a talk with my doc about starting my prostate check-ups a little sooner than what the medical profession recommends. My dad, uncle, and maternal grandfather all had prostate cancer. I got a cholesterol scare in 01 thanks to a health screening provided by my insurance company. Got it under control via diet and exercise. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I gotta say Burley,...from your avatars,...you don't look very healthy :-[ ;D Quote
