justfishin Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Getting my strenth back and ready for bow season. I am thinking of going back to fixed blades, why?, I am not sure other than I had some problems with blood trails a few times. I average two a year with the bow. No, not all bucks, I eat deer meat all year long and make my own bolona, chipped, jerky, etc. To the point. I have used Spitfire Mechanical three blades in 85gr now for about three years. I have only lost one deer but, I am not happy about the blood trail. I used Steel Force 100gr before and XX-75 aluminum arrows. I have since changed over to Carbon Force Express in 4560's. My PSE is fast and I was concerned about losing the accuracy I have with what I am using now. Its awsome and dead on. I am thinking of going to a Muzzy MX-4 in 100gr. They are a lower profile fixed blade and I heard good things about them. I know, why fix it if it isn't broke? Have any of you stuck a whitetail with these broadheads and if so did you get a good blood trail?, and, how are they on carbon shafts and a fast bow. I am set up at 70lbs and shooting about 295-305. Please Matthews fans, don't hit me about my PSE !!!, lol. P.S.- PSE fans, check out the new Firestorm X, the bow monkey is calling me !!! http://www.pse-archery.com/prod.php?k=55445&u=0756NX Quote
KS_Bassin Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 There is nothing wrong with PSE I own a PSE NOVA ;D. I have used both fixed and mechanical broadheads. I have shot 2 deer with mechanical broadheads and they went down within eyesite, and the insides are just a big mess. Both are good choices it's just what one guys preference is. The thing i don't like about mechanical is the little rubber bands, and fixed well i've cut my fingers with those razor sharp blades. :'( Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 10, 2007 Super User Posted August 10, 2007 Every thing about me is Ole School; I still shot a Bear Kodiak Magnum & Super Razorhead® 145 grain Quote
BOOYAH Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I been thinkin about trying the Rage broadheads this year. A few guys i've talked to said they just blow through em an rip em up, even a bad hit can be lethal. Anyone else used them? Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 10, 2007 Super User Posted August 10, 2007 Rocket Hammerheads for me, I have shot the Sidewinders with success as well. I am shooting a Browning Mirage, under 60lbs of pull, w/ Gold Tip 5575's and 100gr heads. Putting them through the chrono over 270fps. Good enough for me... Wayne Quote
justfishin Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 Info about " The Rage " broadheads in three blade. There was a recall on the three blades from March 6, 2007---May 31st. Here is the link. http://www.ragebroadheads.com/ Quote
GeorgiaSpotSticker Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Go get you some Raeg 2-blade heads. In 100gr. They fly like darts, the will not open prematurely and they penetrate like a fixed head. Last year I killed a doe with them, and it was a massive blood trail. Double lung complete pass thru. I've also killed several turkeys with the rage 2-blade devestating results.... 8-) Quote
justfishin Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 I hear you Catt. Old school probably still puts tenderloin in the pan. Man, 145gr's is heavy. I imagine penatration is no problem. I like the carbon arrows and the speed. Does it matter, probably not. I never shoot over 25 yards anyway. In fact, most of my shots here at the house are aroung 12-18 yards. I know by the distance of the trees when a deer comes through because I measured them. I am a big believer in the old school broadheads. They penatrate like, right now, with no mechanics involved. I have not had a problem with them opening, and the deer rarely go over 30 yards, in fact some of them take 5 or 6 steps and are down and dead. I am concerned with the light arrows and planing. I think I will go to a 100gr Steel Force and see how it goes. I would think at my bow speed and a old school fixed head 100gr, the arrow will go clean through, what do you think, more damage, better blood? Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 Jim, at 12-18 yards, just about anything is going to get good penetration with a modern compound bow. I think the setup you described above will do just fine for you in those situations. Just remember the saying....its not the arrow, its the indian Quote
justfishin Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 Yes Speedbead, you are right. At that yardage a bow like mine is going to do damage. My concern is blood trails. I hunt mostly in the evening and I like plenty of blood because most of the bucks I have killed have been right at dark. Thank goodness for my blue lighted site pins, lol. We have some new people that moved on my road that outlaw and the bucks are skittish. I have been in the stand as much as possible the past three weeks in the evenings ( da** bugs and mosquitos) and have been seeing four different bucks coming by me pretty regularly. Two scrubs and a nice big bodied 8pt. He has been traveling with another rack buck I just can't get a good look at. I can see horns, still in velvet of course but, he looks to me like a bigger bodied buck. I saw a doe last week right at dark that had both hind quarters snow white. I thought it was somebodys goat coming toward me at first, lol. Man, we have tons of does here this year. Its ridiculous. MMMMMMMM, deer roast covered in Liptons French Onion Soup Mix used like a dry rub, baby red potatoes, Shitaki mushrooms simmered in butter, and mustard greens layered under and around the roast with a couple of hamhocks thrown in served with Alice White Shiraz wine. Desert, cheesecake topped with fresh strawberries. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 There are so many good ones out there its hard to pick just one. I myself still shoot spitfires. Why? They work great for me. quick clean kills on everything I've shot with them. Montec makes good ones steel force good old muzzy thunderheads To name a few. rage are suppose to be good. Never shot them though Quote

Super User Gatorbassman Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 There is nothing better than the right mech. broadhead. I have shot them all and the best one I have found is the Grimm Reeper Broadhead. It doesn't have rubber bands or anything and it is a killer. It even works great on angled shots. I have taken about a dozen deer with them sence I found them. Quote
justfishin Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 Which one are you using, the Razor Tip or Razor Cut? I went to a video screen shoot the other night and shot pretty well. I love that stuff. I heard the Grim Reaper mentioned a couple of times during our conversations. I like the Spitfires and they have no o-rings either, again, its a blood trail thing. I think I have made up my mind to try Razor Cut Grim Reapers in either 85 or 100gr/ 1" 3/4" cut. I should probably stay with the 85's so I won't have to adjust too much. That ought to put blood on the ground. I will tell you how it works out if I kill. Thanks. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted August 12, 2007 Super User Posted August 12, 2007 I use the razor cut. Also if you can find some replacement blades then get them to. It's nice to have them handy when you need them. They can be replaced in just a few minutes. Of coarse I did use the same blades on three different deer once without a problem but I wouldn't recommend it. Quote
the captain Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 I you ain't sure about which you like you could always get Gold Tip Gladiators they got 2 fixed blades and 2 mechanical with max cut dia. of 1.5" you can use all 4 blades as 100 grains or you can use the 2 fixed blades as 85 grain, I think I'll stick with 100 they use no o-rings they have good penetration but I don't know about the blood trail as I have yet to harvest a deer becaue I just started bow hunting last year and I only got out a few times. hope this helps some, if you wanna see em you could probably go to www.goldtip.com Quote
FishingBuds Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Fixed muzzy phantoms Old school and I shoot heavy, aluminum w/125gr on a Reflex Only modern thing I put on it is a whisker biskut-the first ones that were hole, not notched Started off with a release but, went to fingers (left my release at home one time) I really need to be refitted, since shooting finger style. The thing I'm impressed with is the youth models that have been coming out, its allowed my son to have more of a passion for it, nothen cooler than to compete with dad and you can't do it with a toy (he says) Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 13, 2007 Super User Posted August 13, 2007 Justfishing I hunt on the Intercoastal Waterway levees which are extremely dense; most shots are within 15 yards; I hunt from the ground since there are few trees big enough to use a stand & blinds are illegal. I carry only my bow, 6 Easton AXIS Full Metal Jacket arrows, a quiver that fits my belt behind me, an armguard & Fred Bear® Master Glove. Plain & simple ole school Quote
justfishin Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Thanks everyone whom replied. I am glad to see other bow hunters in here. Glad to see your son is interested in the outdoors Fishingbuds, I am sure it makes you proud and makes hunting that much sweeter for you. Its cool some of you stay old school and use your fingers. My buddy uses his fingers and shoots well. I use a release because it keeps things more consistant, for me. Good luck to all of you this season and enjoy your tenderloin!!! Quote
