Hair jigs,spring,summer?????

Do you guys use hair jigs in the spring and summer,or do think that hair jigs are a just a cold water or river jig?

as much as i fish rivers  i have never tried a hair jig on them.  But i would think they would work well    i have only ever used hair jigs right after ice melt

What colors do you like and what kind of trailer do you use?

I'll use hair jigs mainly when it's cold out, but sometimes I use it when the bite is tough in other seasons.

There is the answer I love them when the water is sub 45 degrees but quit using them unless I get desperate.

1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz hair jigs are a mainstay in my area for fishing the flats in the Spring. We swim them with a small grub or twin tail trailer on the back on flats both pre and post spawn. Sit the boat in 8-10 ft, cast to 3 ft, and slowly swim the jig back, keeping it just off the bottom.

Then in the Summer, we use it at night to fish points, bluffs, and humps in 6-20 ft, with a more traditional lift and drop retrieve.

Spring= white or brown with matching trailer

Summer at night= black, red, green, or brown depending on moon phase (new moon=dark; full moon=lighte color).

These smallish hair jigs are best in clear to stained water. It's a finesse type of approach (small bait and subtle action). Great for smallmouth too.

I only use hair jigs in cold water. Once the water temps reach the mid 40s here, I move to finesse jigs, hula Grubs, and tubes.

Sorry I forgot about this thread. I normally fish a mixture of greens and browns for daytime fishing and black or black/blue at night. For a trailor I normally use a Paca Chunk Sr or a Zoom Super Chunk. When I use the Paca Chunk I trim the hair about even with the hook. This allows the flippers on the Paca chunk to move. I leave the hair long when using a Zoom super chunk. In either case I use a chunk that closely matches the jig color and I add a rattle for night fishing or muddy water..............................Al
