basspro48 Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 I'll be getting my license soon and I am looking for a job to pay for my own truck, gas, etc. and it just so happens they are building a Gander Mountain near me. They got plenty of positions open in the fishing department and not only would I be makin money but an employee discount and I get to talk about and mess with fishin stuff all day. The only problem is the store is about 18 miles away which is about 25 minutes one way, and I'm not sure, with minimum wage and having to pay for gas, if I'll have much money left over. What do yall think, is it worth it? Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 Just be careful: They give you an employee discount and you may wind up breaking even each week. I learned a long time ago: A MONKEY CAN'T SELL BANANAS ;D Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 30, 2007 Super User Posted July 30, 2007 Can 't you take a bus ? How much is the minimum wage ? Quote
basspro48 Posted July 30, 2007 Author Posted July 30, 2007 I can't take a bus because I live out in the boondocks and there really is no bus service until you get into Richmond city, and I think minimum wage is like $5.15 an hour here in Virginia. Quote
Bassboy15 Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 You should check and see if there is any other job openings around you that relate to your interests, with better pay. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 30, 2007 Super User Posted July 30, 2007 And the fuel consumption of your vehicle is ? Quote
basspro48 Posted July 30, 2007 Author Posted July 30, 2007 not sure yet as I'm still looking, it will probably be an early 90's Ford F-150 or Ranger standard V6 which will get much better mileage than my dad's F-150 V8 that I currently drive. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 30, 2007 Super User Posted July 30, 2007 Gasoline prices will continue their downward movement towards the Fall with the refineries back to full capacity and the removal of the Ethanol requirement. Go for the job at Gander Mountain. Then, when the BPS is open you will have sales experience and can see what BPS will be paying their employees and for that matter, Green Top, too. You can hop on I-295 and be at the store very fast and economical in your truck. Get that position. It will look great on your resume after you finish college and it can turn out to be a full-time summer job once you are in college. And you can let us all know about the sales!!!! Quote
Gorgebassman Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 There is alot of possibiblities available with a job like that. I dont know what the turn over for employees is with GM but theres every chance after a year or so working there that you could move up in pay as well a position. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 30, 2007 Super User Posted July 30, 2007 I don't know about Gander Mountain but Academy starts their employees at $7:00 per hour. Gas prices are going down but it has nothing to do with oil refineries being back to full capacity because they were back to full capacity since shortly after Katrina & Rita. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 Catt, accoridng to Fox News today all of the refineries are up and running now. The last refinery that had the big leak (in Texas) is now at full capacity. Gasoline has been shipped in from other countries for the last few months on tankers. I had no idea this was being done. We need more refineries. We need to start drilling our own oil. We need to protect our boarders. We need to avoid tax hikes that will kill our economy. Have I lost my mind or what??? I need some Etouffee. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 Gander mountain dont pay minimum wage. I was about apply for a job at BPS and chose not too. I work at k-mart and I'm 17 I dont even make minimum wage, but I cant work overtime or nothing. But grocery stores and fast food are usualyl the people that get minimum wages for our age, because they are that cheap. Quote
VekolBass Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Minimum wage was just raised to $5.85 per hour (or something close to that.) Always opt for the job you really want over a dollar or two extra per day in gas money. Life is too precious to waste it doing something you are not interested in. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 Dude I was raised/live on the Louisiana/Texas Gulf coast and have worked in almost every refinery from Baton Rouge to Texas City. The leak at the refinery in Texas didn't shut it down completely, when a disaster occurs at one refinery the others up their out put. This is a load of BS the media uses to justify the high oil/gas prices > Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 Other than the local video rental shack and a few other mom & pop places, I don't know of any business that pays minimum wage. Local McDonald's hire between $6 and $7 an hour depending on qualifications. Local Wally World starts off around $6.50. Quote
bassin_man Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Take the job man if you get the chance. It took me almost one year of applying to get a job at a outdoors retail store. I finally did receive my chance at Cabela's. I drive 35-40 minutes (depending on traffic) one way for work but you know what I don't really care because I am working at a place I want to work until I get my degree done. Heck I might see if I can go back down to part-time once I'm done with college for a little extra income. Plus the discount doesn't hurt either. Quote
Super User flechero Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 Even if you get bad mileage in your truck, you are talking about 1 hr's pay in gas money... that beats the heck out of a crap job. And you'll make up the gas money in the discounted purchases you make. Of course you need to have a crap job a while to understand how bad it could be. ...lol I think you can trust us on this one. Yea buddy Try building a 2 mile long board road (that's right a road built out of wood) through a Southwest Louisiana marsh to an oil derrick. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 As of July 24th, 2007 the Federal Minimum Wage was raised to $5.85/hr. There are stipulations that allow companies to stray from paying the full wage: A minimum wage of not less than $4.25 may be paid to employees under age 20 for their first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment, as long as their employment does not displace other workers. Here is the link that should answer you minimum wage questions. Wayne Quote
armesjr Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 If you work for minimum wage (40 hour weeks), your pay check will be right at 350 every two weeks. That was at 5.15 an hour though, so at 5.85 your paycheck would probably be around 380 a week. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 thats about the distance I drive. Truck gets 17 mpg. Your looking at approx 6 bucks per day. Thats 1.5 hrs of work after taxes. Not to bad considering your age and what companies pay for unskilled labor. any where you go for the most part the wages will be close. I'd do what I wanted. Like work at a fishing store. Your young. if it turns out that it sucks. put in your 2 weeks and go somewhere else. I did the same thing when I was your age. I worked in a sporting goods store for 6 years through high school and college because of the good hrs. The thing with GM is you might be able to move up in the business. But like said above. Monkeys dont sell bananas. Be careful it can get very expensive. Quote
basspro48 Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 I'm definitely gonna shoot for this job, I just hope they still have the openings when I get my license in a couple months. And thanks to all yall for voicing your opinions, it really helps hearing other people's viewpoints...and I found a saweeet Bronco for sale thats got a 12" lift, 38's, and its really cheap. Just a little engine work and she'll run good, I just gotta save up the money first Quote
George Welcome Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 I'm definitely gonna shoot for this job, I just hope they still have the openings when I get my license in a couple months. Retail positions in any store in the USA are always there. It will be a great experience for you. You will learn what dealing with the public really means. Quote
gopherbass Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 I had a nice balance on my Gander card by the time my tenure at Gander Mountain was complete. Working at Gander was fun, however. Just don't get sucked in by the employee discount. Quote
basspro48 Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 Yeah I'm hopin I can resist the call of the monkey and leave with a paycheck, not just a bunch of shiny new gear...that does sound good though... Quote
