Two-A-Days

Well, high school football starts today here in IN. Two-A-Days are upon us. It's about 90+ degrees. As a coach, I look forward to the blood and sweat, but man it's hot. Lot's of water breaks....every year someone dies from the heat during practice somewhere. I pray it does not happen this year. They keep moving school and practice closer into the heat of the summer here. I know my football friends on the East Coast start much later.  If you play, or have a friend or family member play, pray they have a good injury free season and remain healthy!

"Closer into the summer"-

Hmmm.  That's exactly the opposite of what we're doing in Texas.  This year we all have to start the year the last week of August (we teachers go back the 20th).  The Texas tourism industry and comptroller are in cohootz over this.  The comp. claims the utilities will cost less and the tourism industry is looking for a longer season.  It's just as hot here in Sep. as Aug. and too hot for many to take vacations in August.  The funny thing is that the football practices are still going on early.  One of our coaches said that they wouldn't get in all their games if they didn't go back to practice the same time.  I don't know about IN, but football is king here in Texas.  No offense, but heaven forbid us to have one less HS football game this year.  I love football just as much as the next guy, but academics have taken the back door to sports here.  I, too, hope for the best with the football boys.  It's good to hear that you are giving lots of breaks and plenty of water.  I'm afraid that some get so caught up in winning that they neglect the well-being of their players.

When the University of Notre Dame won their last National Championship they had one loss that season - to Ole Miss in Oxford in September.

The Fighting Irish players did not do well in the Mississippi heat and the Rebels won the game.

From that day on the Irish will not play any team down South in September.

When LSU plays Notre Dame it has to be in October or November and the game must be at night.

So I can understand the problem with the heat; and so can our Irish friends in Indiana.

Of course, playing in an air conditioned dome on New Years Day did not help the Irish, either.

Tiger Stadium is known for night games, an idea that was first introduced in 1931 against Spring Hill (a 35-0 LSU victory). In 2006, LSU celebrated its 75th year of playing night football in Tiger Stadium. Since that first night game in 1931, LSU has played the majority of its games at night, 263 night games vs 49 day games.

So don't blame the heat for Notre Dame's losses to LSU

I may be crazy, but I heard Nick Saban try to get Notre Dame to add Alabama to schedule, and Notre Dame refused.

I am really looking forward to football season. I love college and pro's, but highschool is where the heart is if you ask me. I try to make all of the games I can, but if I can't I can still hear the band play from my house. I can't wait for my kids to get old enough to play if they decide they want to.
