14 in camp, two days of hunting in Bedford and Campbell Co's.  Everyone got at least one.  Limit up there is two per day, so it isn't hard to stack 'em high pretty quickly with so many in camp.

That was opening weekend of muzzleloading season.

Sam, I have not hunted game animals in a long time myself, actually not since I moved out of Wyoming. I grew up in the woods of Arkansas. If you don't mind answering the question; how did you hunt that you found it boring? I ask because when I hunted I tracked animals year round to learn their patterns and when a lot younger I actually hunted deer down by their tracks. I found tracking tons of fun because I could always find sign of different animals and spending time in field observation of animals was for me a joy. By the time hunting season came I knew the animal I had chosen's daily habits and routine quite well. I may hunt again if I find someone that I can share the hunt with as I have never been about having to kill, all into the hunt as in stalking close, then slipping away undetected and the enjoying the experience to the fullest. I chose only to take mature animals and then only under my personal limitations. We all set our own standards be it fishing or hunting. Unlike my father, I approached fishing as a hunter because I was a hunter first. So I hunt fish as I would a deer, elk, or bear. Some fish tend to be more solitary and some prefer groups, food preferences, terrain preferences, etc. just as different game animals so understanding these behaviors makes one better able to predict where to locate the game you seek.

That's what I like. I actually went on a deer hunt with one of my dad's friends. The sitting in the stand, watching nature, calling in the deer in was all cool. It's the killing part that ain't for me. Nothing against it, it's just not for me.

That's how I feel. I like everything about it except the killing, I don't like venison enough to shoot a deer and I couldnt kill it just to kill it so I just save my money for fishing. Maybe when they invent a hunting equivalent to catch & release...  ;D

they kinda did but not any more since many believed it was unethical.it was a fairly large fenced in area (several acres) and they shot them with tranquilizers got a score and relesed them again

Hey P-Rock,

I am Type A and just sitting in a tree stand for many hours was difficult.

We all had our stands as there were four or five of us hunting on private land and we had others trespass durng hunting season so it was dangerous to "track" anything.

Climbing up and down the trees and using the rope to pull yourself up into the treestand got old and one day, as I was just sitting there listening to the squirrls and leaves falling and seeing the wild turkeys flying around, I thought that I could have more fun doing other things.

So now I fish which keeps me active and I find fishing more challenging than hunting.

And I really do not like cold weather.  When the temperature drops below 70 I get cold!

Used to hunt deer(rifle and bow), ducks, doves, turkeys,quail.......Fish year round now, love to duck hunt when its too cold to fish. Alot of variety to hunt here , plus i am lucky and have a 12 acre pond surrounded by oak trees, i drain and plant it..Doesnt hurt that it on the highest elevation for 30 miles either, last 5 seasons, i have managed to kill/watch canvasbacks, redheads, gadwalls, and widgeon plus the big numbers of the usual ducks. Really rare for where i live. Looking for the used gear to rig my bow for shooting gar and carp....

Use to when younger.  Stopped in high school.  However, I do enjoy venison!  My wife's uncle makes venison barbecue (what can I say, we are Eastern NC and barbecue everything) that is absolutely worth fighting over.  I remind everyone that it is Bambi so they won't eat it - MORE FOR ME!!

Uncle and cousins hunt a lot in North West VA, and he makes some good jerky.

I loved bow hunting because it allowed be to get so close to game before even thinking about shooting. I used bare recurve and longbows as I never could get used to those compounds since I shot totally instinctive. That demyelinating disease finished that, as my left arms nerves will burn and my arm will collapse even though I am holding the bow with the left and drawing with my right.

Sitting in the cold is hard, I understand. The cold does not bother me as much despite growing up in the Deep South. I have hunter elk when the temperature was down to 10 to 15 below zero and helped make sure the elk stayed put in the 4X4 on the way back to camp by riding in the back of the open bed with the elk but it had warmed up to about zero by then. Some people are more affected by cold just like some are more recoil shy than others. I have seen big men that could not handle a .30-06 and small women that handle and shoot .338 and .375 Magnums with no problems. Mostly I hunted public land but did not start hunting until I stopped seeing other people. During my last elk hunt in Wyoming during the two weeks we were there my wife and I only met two other people and saw a pack string with four hunters and a guide about a quarter mile off once as they passed.

I started hunting like that because I have seen too many hunters that should never leave their city life for the woods. One of these types shot and killed my horse because he thought it was a deer when I was a boy in Arkansas. In Wyoming, I was shot at by some of these great white hunters even though I was standing in the open with blaze orange on and waving my arms to identify myself; so I retreated deep into the wilderness where that type will not go. They were road hunters driving around and shooting at anything that moved. Yes, their method was illegal, but game wardens can't be everywhere. Hunting is a great tradition which is just as noble today as it was when our forefathers set foot on the shores on this land however it is up to each individual hunter to keep it that way by the actions they choose to take in the field. When you see others violating the law don't just shake your head; get a license plate number, take notes and descriptions of actions and turn that over to Game Wardens. The life you may be protecting may be your own or a child's playing unseen in their yard that such uncaring criminals harm next time.

I hunt, Deer eat'em as well, Turkey eat those too ;)

Wife hunts eats it all ;)

Son Hunts it, eats it ;)

Daughter watches hunts but, will eat it all as well ;)

Me and the wife get some funny looks out there when we hunt, lunch time at the road is funny, she sits close for a wife but, I'm sure they think to close for a buddy when your coming down the road ;D

One time opening morning we were getting our stuff ready and I helped her get her water belt on and as I buckeled it a fella walked by and I of course say "how's it going" he did a quick nod and turned around and went the other way- we laughed that one up ;D  Got the spot to our selves :D

Yes, I mostly deer hunt. I am an extreme stalking/still hunting freak. I enjoy getting close and putting the odds in the animals favor and the rewards are first and formost meat in the freezer and a great story to go with it. I took this beauty at 10 yards from the ground. The closest I have ever taken a deer is 4 yards using a Ruger Super Redhawk 44mag.

Deer027.jpg

One of the best stalks I have ever attempted was last year with a bow. I spotted a big doe about 300 yards away and watched her bed down. The only problem is that she was faceing me. I was in some old growth timber so there was little undergrowth to hide me. I dropped all my gear and took my can call, two arrows and my bow with me. I started belly-crawling for several yards untill I had a large tree between me and the deer. I crawled from tree to tree for nearly and hour and a half untill I was about 60 yards away. Then the deer heard me and stood up. I used the call to calm it down and it moved a little farther away and bedded down again still faceing me. I figured that I had it convinced that I was another deer so I use this opportunity to close the distance a little fast while keeping yet another big tree between us. I closed the distance to what I thought was 35 yards. I drew back and stepped out from behind the tree and shot. I shot over her back and the she stood up and ran off. I paced off the distance and it was only 25yards. The gig was up and I had a smile from ear to ear for the rest of the day.

I think the art of still hunting is going away, there is nothing more thrilling than to get so close to a deer that you can hear him breathing,I cant sit in a stand very long so id say that 98% of my hunting is on the ground, still hunting.Ive tought all of my kids my wife and my best friend to hunt this way and they love it.

Heck yeah, I hunt as much as I can I only kill what me and my family needs. I hunt rabbit, squirrel, fish, deer, turkey, dove, and I also hunt varmints.
