Super User Root beer Posted July 15, 2007 Super User Posted July 15, 2007 I've played baseball for long time. I got hurt several years ago and eventually just lost the touch. . So last night I went to the Tennessee Smokies vs Mobile BayBears game. To make it a long short story, I think mobile bay got cheated out. I had to tell you about my baseball experience before I can tell you this story. I've notice a lot of times when watching MLB or playing a simple little league game the manager will argue with umpire and umpire will never overturn the call because he saving his own arse. Have you got ever seen a call get overturn? I'm tell you folks 3 calls last night that basically hurt mobile. One, mobile was at bat and he laid down a bunt down 1st base line took off running toward first and pitcher pick up ball and glove flipped it over to 1st base, by this time the runner already on base and 1st basement mitt is still in air after the ball. Now I'm sitten on other side of the field by 3rd base, but it look from my posistion he was safe (again I could be wrong since I was on other side of field.) and the runner threw his helment down and got in umpire face and was immeiditaly ejected out of the game. The mobile manager begun to argue with call claiming that first basemen was never in control of ball until after runner was already on the bag. Next call there was no argument but he was defitnely out. Ball was hit in center for a single, but centerfielder made an error on the ground ball recover and runner took off for 2nd. The centerfielder made a nice nice throw to second and he was CLEARLY OUT. But was called safe and both the shortstop and second basemen for mobile bay was about to get in umpire face, but decided to stay 3 feet away from him instead. They was mad. The last call was a clear sign that mobile was being cheated. During the 8th inning the game was tied up, the smokies had a runner on 3rd with 1 out, they been trying to bunt the entire time. He went down for a low pitch in attempt to bunt it, but instead it looks he fouled it and hit the plate, but the pitch was called a a ball rather then a strike . The manager went out to argue with the umpire and was eventually ejected out of the game. I decided to leave the game after that inning because my nuggest were getting roasted after those bad calls. sad. Oh the smokies won the game with a two run walk off homer in bottom of the 9th. Quote
Guest ncbass24 Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I've seen a call get overturned in a college world series game. It was this years world series, and I think the game was Rice vs. Witchita State. A Witchita player hit a chopper to short, and the shortstop made a bad throw. The first basemen managed to catch the throw, and the runner was called out on a close play. The Witchita manager argued the call and the umps had a conference. After a long conference, they overturned the call. Witchita tied the game, but Rice ended up wining anyway. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 15, 2007 Super User Posted July 15, 2007 Remember the home run in the World Series or a playoff game that was called a home run based on fan interference? The fan received death threats and if I recall, had to be escorted out of the stadium for his own safety. Other than for that, I do not recall any play being changed. It amazes me how many times I think the batter is safe at first base and he is called out and no one complains. It is like you are supposed to be called out if the first baseman catches the ball and his foot is on the base even if the batter reaches the base before the ball is caught. Even if the ump is out of position on a play they will make the call. And most other umps will not overturn the call even if it is wrong. Umpire courtersey to each other. I used to catch (knees are now gone) and just kept my big mouth shut as it would do no good to complain. The umps would call you out on strikes if you made a scene or tried to embarrass them or made a smart remark to yourself or the next batter and the umpire behind the plate overheard it. I made a jester by moving my some plastic around and up and down with my had when I squated down for the next batter so the pitcher would know my thoughts. Otherwise, the umps are God on a baseball field. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 16, 2007 Super User Posted July 16, 2007 I played college ball and umpired H.S and college. Only calls that may get overturned are check swings. Other than that , the umps pretty much stick together. Mostly, not always. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 I gave up on baseball because of the '94 strike. Haven't watched a single game since. Bunch of overpaid cry babies on steroids. Now, for some REAL competition, try NHRA drag racing...The fastest show on earth. No disputes here, first one to the stripe wins... Quote
