Guest avid Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I saw something on the news last week about a husband and wife who were being surrounded by IRS agents because they refused to pay taxes. They believed that the government has no right to levy taxes and so won't pay. The agents cut power off to the home, but the folks use solar power and "didn't notice" These is an interesting story that I can't seem to get follow up on. Anyone heard about this, and how it's playing. Sorry, but I don't know the state or any other information. Quote

Super User flechero Posted June 25, 2007 Super User Posted June 25, 2007 Well, law or no law, if people quit paying taxes, we will have to quit offering full benifits packages to millions of illegal aliens. We'd go from welfare to farewell Quote

We'd go from welfare to farewell ;D Well why didn't anyone think of that before! NO taxes. Great idea!!!! Oh, that means no armed forces, and police, but hey, we can all buy guns and shoot whoever the hell we feel like. Welcome to Dodge, cowboy Quote

John J. Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 this country is starting to get overpopulated anyway (mainly with illegal aliens). I agree with that concept fletchero! Quote

We'd go from welfare to farewell Definitely a good theory, except that illegal aliens are not eligible to receive "full benefits." In PA, they are eligible for emergency medical care (hospital ER) during the time of their emergency. Before and after, they are not...Dont feel bad, many people have this misconception. Wayne Quote
BassChaser57 Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 It is hard to believe but there is no law that forces us to pay taxes. We agree to pay taxes when we get an account at the bank. Hidden in the paperwork is an agreement that we will pay taxes or suffer the wrath of the government. Even according to the article with the link, the Law Professor said "we as a people agree to pay taxes." He did NOT say we have to pay because of government law or decree. YES, I am very happy to live in the USA and will pay my share of my taxes, this is just about laws/agreements. Quote
Guest avid Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 This is getting rediculous, but hey that never stopped us before. It may not specify it in the constitution or be legislated in clear terms, but this has gone to the supreme court and they said in effect "you gotta pay taxes" That was the United States Supreme Court. Ya' know the folks who decide what the law is. So while I sympathize with the folks. It most certainly IS the law. Quote
frogtog Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Could you just imagine what this country would be like without taxes. No law, fire fighters, roads etc. in fact it would'nt even be a country. :-/ Quote
Clayton Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Well, guys sometimes not being told what to do is better. Take the free market for example. Without all the regulations that the government places on products the price would go down because companies wouldnt be jumping through hoops and spending all kinds of money to meet certain requirements. Now you may be thinking that without regualtion companies would make terrible things that would hurt us. But if they did that then people wouldnt buy it, and then no money for those guys who soon go out of business. SO you see free markets can work for the better. I guess my point would be that even if we didnt have to pay taxes, people still would or they leave the areas that were becoming delapidated. In time people would learn to set these things up their selves and in doing so it would be more efficient and cheaper. But that is just my two cents. Quote
George Welcome Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 There has been many challenges to the 16th Amendment to the Constitution with no successful challeges to date. The amendment was fully ratified in 1913. Those that have challenged and withheld payment have ended up looking out through barred walls. Quote
Guest avid Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Some interesting comments here, but it was not my intent to debate the validity of taxation. I absolutely had no intention of getting into yet another discussion of illegal aliens. How they work their way into so many threads is amazing. No, I was looking for an update. The last I saw was that the couple was surrounded by Federal Agents a la Ruby Ridge and Waco, but were armed and said they would fight before surrendering. Then the story disappeared, at least from my news sources. I still don't know what happened and I'm still curious. Were they finally arrested? Is the standoff continuing? Updates please. thanks, avid Quote
