Guest avid Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I notice that dell has a service where it can review your current system setup and update your bios. I got my dimension 4600 in December of 2003. It has a 2.6 gig pentium 4 processor. Needless to say, much software and hardware has been added since that time. I have bought a one gig memory card, that will give me all the RAM I could possibly need, but I'm wondering if updating the BIOS is a good idea. I hate to mess with stuff I know nothing about. The system runs pretty good. I expect the added memory will improve it's performance even further. Yo, GEEKS - whaddyaTink eh? Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 15, 2007 Super User Posted June 15, 2007 I aint got a clue what your talking about . How did you fit a ram into your computer anyway ? And why arent you ? Quote
Cephkiller Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I am not an expert, but I have built computers and I do all that needs to be done to maintain them, so for what it's worth here's my opinion. If everything works OK, leave it alone. The only time I think BIOS needs updated is if you are having hardware compatibility issues. Quote
Vyron Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 avid , if ur not having any problems with ur system , dont update the bios. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted June 15, 2007 Super User Posted June 15, 2007 1 GB memory card = RAM? :-? Quote
frogtog Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 I just don't know anymore, do they have a pill for this. :-/ Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted June 16, 2007 Super User Posted June 16, 2007 If you are not VERY proficient with computers, I would strongly recommend that you do not mess with the BIOS. When installing new hardware or software, the BIOS is automatically updted as required by the new product. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted June 16, 2007 Super User Posted June 16, 2007 the BIOS is a very serious part of your computer and if fooled around with by someone who doesn't know what they're doing, it can very easily damage your computer's function Quote

What I'm talking about is a service provided by Dell, where they review your current systems setup, as oppossed to what you had when first bought, and then make adjustments. It's all done by them thourgh the internet. I didn't know the bios automatically update. Yes, my system "isa no broke, so no gonna fix" but I saw this service offered and thought I would check it out with some you on the forum who know about this stuff. I will leave it alone. thanks again. If you haven't guessed, I love computers and I'm a total geek wannabe. Quote
Cephkiller Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 Hey! I didn't even insinuate that you didn't know what you were doing and do I get a thanks? Ungrateful %$#@!^^%$#@!!!!!!. ;D Quote

Super User Long Mike Posted June 17, 2007 Super User Posted June 17, 2007 Avid, if your computer is a Dell, as I assume it is, and Dell is offering a free BIOS upgrade, then by all means go for it. Just make absolutely sure that the upgrade offer is really from Dell. Log on to Dell directly and check for upgrade offers. There are a lot of impersonators out there who would love to hijack your computer. Quote
Guest avid Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I got my 1 gig memory card. Sure is purdy. I ususally need a few days to stare at something like this before installing it. I'll double check the bios update directly from dell after the installation. If I disappear from the fourms, send the cavalry,,,,er the geek squad Quote
paleo Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 hello i am a+ certified and i would not update a bios unless you have a problem and the update has the instructions for that problem an incorrect bios update will render your pc a pile of crap good luck Quote
Guest avid Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Thanks to all. I installed the 1gb memory card and it has speeded things up nicely. Unfortunately my favroite website still can run a bit slow at times but hey BassResource.com ain't gettin any younger either It's amazing how much dust can accumulate in one tower. Anyway, I ain't touching the bios. My friends on BassResource.com say don't do it, so I ain't gonna do it. And if you all jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, I'm right behind you TOP OF THE WORLD MA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (note to youngins, must know old movies to get this) Quote
crayon7 Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 I am also A+ certified. yea if it aint broke dont fix it. The only reason I updated my bios on my P4 board (which is not stock) Was to over clock the 3.0ghz hyper threader I have in here right now. Your should accept the ram without any kind of anything needing to be flashed. And as for A+ certified blah I only got it cause the suits want to see it. Just an expensive piece of toilet paper if you ask me. Have fun take it to a shop if you dont know what your doin. Quote
paleo Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 hey that A+ was worth an extra 15grand on my salary so it was was worth it for me i guess you get out of it want you put in to it Quote
Guest avid Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Well I have be called A-lot of things but A plus is not one of them PS - I checked on the bios update with Dell. They said no update needed. Ain't it great when EVERYBODY agrees on something? Quote
