Floridabassking352 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Well guys, I'll be going off to college in a few months and I have absolutely NO CLUE what I need/should buy for my dorm. Any ideas would be much appreciated. If you have any other opinions on what I might need for outside the dorm, or college life in general, it would be helpful also. Thanks. Quote
RiskKid. Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Dorm space is limited so if you can combine TV in your computer monitor that is good, a small fridge and small microwave is nice. For outside just have a great time but you will need to bring your common sense and keep your head about you. It's real easy to have too much fun and not pay attention to business.....be careful to balance both. You will need to learn how to do laundry if you don't already.....bring coins for the washers and dryers. Most schools have an orientation.....they are helpful. Good luck and have a great time! Quote

Super User cart7t Posted June 13, 2007 Super User Posted June 13, 2007 After plenty of beer, I can't really think of anything.... Oh maybe some pens and paper if the budget allows it after the beer. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted June 13, 2007 Super User Posted June 13, 2007 Rule number 1: coordinate with your roommate. You don't need 2 of everything, so figure out what you can bring and what he can bring. My list: stereo computer TV small fridge 1-2 small pots for cooking your Ramen noodles laundry bag I'll add some later when I think of more Quote

Hawgin Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I believe Droz from PCU summed it up best: Jeremy Piven (Droz): ... Well, here's all you need to know. Classes, nothing before 11. Beer, its your best friend, you drink a lot of it. Women, you're a freshman, so its pretty much out of the question. Will you have a car? ... Someone on your hall will, find them and make friends with them on the first day ... Quote
L-Train Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 College... the good ole days. My word of advice. Have a good time and enjoy it b/c it will be over before you know it. Also, I can't stress this enough, GO TO CLASS. I went to a small liberal arts college and lived in the dorm for 2 years. I partied my you know what off for the first two years. I skipped every class at least once a week. After my sophomore year my GPA was below 2.0. I moved in with two other buddies in a house and did not miss one day of class my junior and senior year. my GPA those two years was 3.75. The first two years killed my overall GPA. Professors know who comes to class. they may not act like it matters, but it does. There were at least 4 - 5 times my junior and senior year i had 78% or 88 % in a class. I got the benefit of the doubt b/c i attended class every day and they bumped my grade up to an A or a B. Back to a lighter note. Take advantage of being young and being able to party two nights in a row. Those days are numbered. B/C Hank Jr. said it best, "The hangovers hurt more than they used to". Quote
Red Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 shower shoes!!!(flip flops) the dorm bathrooms can get kinda nasty! where i went to school the RA's could "key in" and open your door if they thought something was going on....so the big joke when you came to someones room was to say..."RA keying in" then everyone would freak out and try to hide the beer....then they would open the door and it was just their buddy...haha right? well one time someone did this and we figured it was a buddy...so we didnt hide anything and opened the door...it WAS an RA!!! everyone got busted...good times..enjoy it Cliff Quote

Guest avid Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I'm going to spare you some of Avid's famous humour. This post was screaming for it, so you got and will not doubt get plenty more. I just want to say that I really *** you. Going off to college is one of the major milestones in life. You will be exposed to things you never imagined before. Be open minded. Learn. Have fun, meet girls, do all the things that college kids are famous for, but LEARN. This is the one great opportunity of your life to have access to challenging, stimulating, and yes, even controversial ideas. Leave your preconceived notions at home. Be a sponge. Absorb everything. THINK. Be fearless in your willingness to consider possibilities that were previously unthinkable. Oh, and get one of those heating coils so you can make a cup of coffee while pulling an allnighter. What college? Quote
Fisher of Men Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 One calculator One Blonde One Brunette One Redhead MAKE SURE LAST THREE HAVE BETTER THAN A 3.5 GPA, SO THEY CAN ALSO DO YOUR PAPERS FOR YOU A blonde with at least a 3.5? Good luck!! ;D JK Seriously, many have summed it up pretty well. I really never lived the "traditional" college life or lived in a dorm. I went to a JC for the first couple of years and lived at home as long as I could. I then transferred to a four year university and commuted for a year, then got married my senior year. My first response to your question was a level head. Keep in mind why you're PAYING to go there. Don't lose focus. A college degree is priceless to have. I completely agree that you MUST attend classes, no matter what junk you've heard back in high school. If you can, create a relationship with the prof. At least try to say good morning to them or tell them "hello" in the hallways, etc. This may set you apart from the other "numbers" in the classroom. If you are having trouble with the class, schedule an appointment with the prof. and go talk to them about it. In most cases, if they sense that you are concerned about your grade (and have attended classes) they will be more willing to help you out in the end. This helped me out in a VERY difficult biology class during my sophomore year. Most of all, have fun and make wise choices. Don't overload yourself, but involve yourself in extra-curricular/leadership activities. These are very helpful on your resume when you go look for work after graduation. Hope some of this information helps. God bless, Fisher <>< Quote
