What is the best spinnerbait??

Hi-

I've been fishing with good success down here in Texas on small lakes/ponds with Senkos, plastic worms... a lot of the lures listed in the forum.. flukes, etc...

But I've had no luck lately on spinnerbaits and not up to date on a lot of the current products out there...

Just wondering what brand of spinnerbaits you guys have been catching them on??

Not trying be a smartarse I catch fish with any of the spinnerbait brands and models available, even with some pretty old ones I 've got in my T-boxes. So which one is the best is highly subjective.

I agree.  I have caught as many fish with the Walmart $1 bait as the $6 Terminator.  

Terminator seems to have the biggest following, and some other good names are Strike King's Premium Spinnerbait, and Stan Sloan's Zorro Aggravater.  Booyah is OK.  As bad as Matzuo cranks suck, their spinnerbaits are top notch.

Spinnerbaits my friend are not really complicated lures, as long as you have a good quality hook, good quality wire and a ball bearing swivel on the main blade you got a good spinnerbait. They are so simple that you can even make your own by purchasing the components ( which is a fun thing to do, making your own spinnerbaits ).

Selecting the blade size and configuration, where to cast them and how to retrieve them is, like with any other lure, what makes the bait effective or not.

When it comes to selecting skirt material I prefer living rubber ( which has become scarce ) over silicone, I feel rubber has better action, responds faster and bulkier than silicone, only problem with rubber is that with time it dries and becomes brittle.

Yep, no such thing as THE best as bass will hit them all at one time or another. As someone else mentioned, look at the different components and match them to the conditions you face. A couple we've used lately with good success not already mentioned are War Eagle and the now discontinued Glamour Shads.

I personally love Terminator Super Stainless and T-1s. I have also been having success with the SK KVD spinnerbaits. There are a lot of good baits on the market, a lot of it really boils down to personal preference.

yes I have a fishing buddy that has recommended War Eagle spinners...

I've caught a lot of bass on spinnerbaits in the past... just haven't had much luck lately.....

I do remember those old rubber skirts.. they were good... real good... but man in the summer they sure melted quick and wore out quick....

As already pointed out, if the proper components are used the brand of spinnerbait is immaterial. Look for the following features:

> Ball-Bearing Swivel     (mandatory)

> R-Bend Eyelet             (with a looped eyelet, the line is prone to fouling in the line-eye during the cast)

> Long Arm                   (end of arm should reach or surpass the hook-point)

> Silicone or Latex Skirt  (avoid vinyl like the plague)

> Bullet Nosed Head      

My favorite spinnerbait is the HeavyCover Spinnerbait, but I've noticed that their website is presently down (doesn't look good).

They use top-flight components and let the customer custom-design his own spinnerbait from soup-to-nuts

(hope they get back-up and running).

I also like the Booyah spinner baits, they aren't to expensive and they catch fish

Im partial to the Boyah's but I'll agree with waht's already being posted here, as long as the action is smooth in the water, they will catch fish

Bitin Titains' www.bitintitan.com and Terminators T1 and T2s www.terminatorlures.com are my favs. I especiallly like the T1 painted blades. most of my spinnerbaits are Strike Kings and Booyahs. (I only have a few Terminators and Titains, they're kinda pricey....)

I see you're from Texas. Academy has some nice ones for like $1.29. I like to buy cheap ones and modify them. (I usually modify every spinnerbait I use. ie; trim the skirt and a rattle switch blades, paint blades, etc.)

My favorite colors are:

Firetiger

Red

Blue

White

Black

Chart.

Chart./black (a sharpie works well for this.)

Green Perch

Gizzard Shad

Speckled Trout

& Pink.

I have so many different brands of spinnerbaits in my box I'm not even sure what half of them are.  One thing about all of them though is quality components.  Ball bearing swivels for the blades and quality sharp hooks on the business end.  Otherwise, I've rarely ever seen a situation where there was a "best" spinnerbait out there.

well everyone thanks for all the suggestions.... a few I've decided to get that sound real nice are the mentioned lures- KVD strike king spinnerbait, booyah, and terminator.... and there is an Academy right down the street so I'll probably buy more of the one mentioned for $1.29....

It is not necessarily the "best spinnerbait" but what makes your spinnerbait different from everyone else's spinnerbait?

The bass will see a lot of the same types and actions of the basic spinnerbiats. So what would make them chase your spinnerbait if it is exactly the same as the other spinnerbaits?

Maybe a shiny skirt will set them off? Another color skirt or skirt color combination? A lighter wire?  A shorter wire from the head to the tip where you tie the line? A clam shell weight clamped onto the hook shank to give it a deeper run or to throw it into the wind?

What weight to throw?  1/4 ounce or 1 ounce?  Big difference depending on the body of water and time of year.

A different bland combination? Diamond blades vs. smooth baldes?  The size of your blades?  Blade colors?

And how about your technique?  Throw and reel back?  Slow roll?  God deep?  Yo-yo spinnerbait? Let it fall and then rip it off the bottom?  Throw in bushes? Use a trailer hook?  What color trailer hook? Look like a shad?  Look like a bluegill? Look like something from Mars that they have never seen?

Be different with your spinnerbait presentations.  Cause the bass to be inquisitive and to run at the bait and either hit it hard or suck it into their mouths with hardly a splash.

Just make them hit it.

Simple, isn't it? ;D

Like most Ole Guys here I've caught bass on every name brand from Beetle Spins, H&H, & Hildebrandt Snagless Sally. With spinner baits it's all about vibration/flash so I throw Stanley Wedge; tapered from tip to end these blades transfer energy to the end of the blade causing one heck of a thump.

Like others have said there is no BEST spinnerbait out there really.

My top producers for this year so far have been War Eagle Screamin Eagles and KVD Strike Kings in a shad color.

Guys, I am co-owner of Rattle Head Baits and thus, partial to the Rattle Head Spinnerbait, However, I was reading this post and immediately thought of our bait.

The Rattle Head Spinnerbait is different from any other brand of spinnerbait on the market because the hook moves side-to-side to tick a brass chamber in the head of the bait. In our underwater sound tests, it sounds kinda of like the clicking of a crawdad. It is this distinct sound, even more than the added vibration, etc., I believe, that makes the difference in the water. And, based on the info that I have received from our pros and return customers, I am confident that if the conditions are right for a spinnerbait, and that one is fishing the right color, size, and blade combination for the situation, our spinnerbait will outperform a regular spinnerbait of the same color, size and blade combination, 3 or 4 to 1. Don't get me wrong I am not saying our spinnerbait is the "best spinnerbait," I simply saying that the distinct noise produced by our spinnerbait makes it more likely to attract bass from further distances and allow them to zero in on it over a regular bait in the water.

I will say the highest quality spinnerbaits I've fished are the War Eagles.  I haven't seen any other manufacturer hand-tie the skirts with copper wire like they do.   Although, as said sometimes cheaper baits outfish them.  War Eagles are just another tool, and you can't have only one socket in your toolbox...no?
