pieman123 Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you weigh a fish on a scale like this? Do you hook it through it's lips/jaw area? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_36591?cmCat=CROSSSELL&cmid=PP_P2_2 I have never used a scale before but plan on purchasing one. Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted April 30, 2008 Super User Posted April 30, 2008 Slide the hook underneath the fishs gill plate. Quote
George Welcome Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Get this kind and never worry about injuring the fish. Can be ordered from Cabelas. Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 30, 2008 Super User Posted April 30, 2008 I never liked weighing them by the gill area. Rather, I would put the scale hook through the jaw, immediately next to the hard outer lip so that lip supports the fish's weight. But for the last two years I've used this inexpensive item from Cabela's, inserting the scale hook through a hole in the handle. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 1, 2008 Super User Posted May 1, 2008 The biggest problem with using a scale is that weighing the fish almost always reduces its weight! : Quote
Super User flechero Posted May 1, 2008 Super User Posted May 1, 2008 ;D Nice, Kent! Sort of the fisherman's version of "ground shrinkage" for antlers. Quote
Shad_Master Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 RW is right about that - but what really reduces the weight is actually landing the fish rather than having it get off right at the boat ;D Quote

Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted May 1, 2008 Super User Posted May 1, 2008 I have never exaggerated the weight or size of a fish Quote
