tallydude Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Okay guys, I've been talking with my girlfriend about where we would go if we left West Palm Beach. We each came up with two cities: Austin and Nashville. We're thinking of the pros and cons of each. Obviously, I would have to move my entire practice to where we went and that would take a while to build back up. She's an attorney that works with state governments, so we'd need to be in a capitol city (Tallahassee is a dark horse). Anyway, I know these are two similar, awesome cities. Can you guys give me the pros and cons of each? We're planning on visiting them this year and making up our minds later. Please keep in mind that I grew up two hours from Nashville in western Kentucky. Thanks guys! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 21, 2007 Super User Posted May 21, 2007 Nothing against Austin and I'm not from Nashville, but... If you like four seasons and a mild winter, Nashville fits the bill. Multi-species fishing opportunities abound in the Nashville area. Vibrant economy and the Home of Country Music. And, most importantly, you would be pretty close to your mom! Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 21, 2007 Super User Posted May 21, 2007 Dang this is by far the hardest question yet, Austin  :-/ Nashville Both cities are awesome, both are beautiful, both have a strong economy, both have excellent college football teams, both have fantastic hunting & fishing. I think it would be to d**n; to d**n close to call  Quote
Replica. Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 I have lived in both cities and Austin and Nashville are great choices.  Both have a great music scene, but Austins is more diverse.  If you like the heat go for Austin (not much humidity), but if you prefer a mild four seasons you can not beat Nashville.  I believe Austin has a faster growing economy, but the last time I lived in Nashville was 10 years ago so this may have changed.  If I was single it would be Austin.  Austin, TX was the first city I ever lived in where it was hard to decide if the 40 year old mom or the 18 year old daughter was hotter  . Super User burleytog Posted May 22, 2007 Super User Posted May 22, 2007 both have excellent college football teams Nashville has a college football team? Austin is overrun with hippies. Quote
RiskKid. Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Well I gotta respond on behalf of the Nashville posse  ;D The college football team (Vanderbilt) will be reminicent of your Wildcat football team but you already know that. The Titans however are alot of fun even though they are down now. The Nashville economy is booming and is a great place for a business owner (I speak from experience here). You already know someone to fish with (me) and would be welcome to join our club. My guess is your Mom would like it if you were in Nashville. Check your PM's Quote
Guest hibachi Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I live an hour from Nashville, and I moved here because I wanted to be close to Nashville after visiting for the first time. Â It is a fun city, great music, you're never too old for the downtown night life, and if you like sports there's SEC college sports, Nashville Preds hockey, Triple-A minor league baseball, and of course the Titans. Â Plus there is good fishing all around (as I'm sure there is in Austin as well) a HUGE Bass Pro Shops, the city is growing and the economy is doing great. I honestly can't think of any cons except for the obvious disadvantages of living in any big city like traffic. Â I've never been to Austin, so can't help you there. Quote
Fisher of Men Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I haven't lived in either one, but have visited Austin numerous times. Â I haven't been to Nashville since I was a kid, so I'll offer some input on Austin. Â From what I hear, the cost of living is kind of high in Austin, and from experience traffic is pretty bad there (although I hear they may build a loop soon to alleviate some of that). Â Others are right about Austin's music. Â It is diverse and was where SRV cut his teeth. Â I've also heard that it IS becoming a liberal haven for those who practice an alternative lifestyle. Â Like Replica said, it might be a good place to live single, but maybe not for a family. Â There are some 'burbs there, Georgetown and Round Rock (within a half hour). Â The temps there are quite hot and from my experience in Texas, the farther south you go, the more humid it is. Â My advice would be to visit both and PRAY. Â I'm sure God will lead you to the right place. Â Just my .02, Fisher Quote
Hookem Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 What is it that you want to know about Austin specifically? Born, raised and lived around here (48 years). Yes, the cost of housing is above the average. Because its not Dallas or Houston!  ;D  ;D Yes, the music scene is, well, Austin Texas!  8-) Yes, there are GREAT hunting and fishing opportunites. Yes, we have THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS.  8-) Yes, we have seasons. Winter and summer. And it can be humid.  Yes, Austin is growing because once folks visit, they have a tendency to stay!  Yes, Austin's and surrounding area's crime rate is low, low, low. Petty stuff but hardly any violent crime. Austin metro population is roughly 1.5m. There were something like 33 murders. Compared to Houston with maybe 350 with only 3 times the population. More folks die in traffic accidents than violent crime. No, its not full of hippies. Not anymore.  :'( No, there is not really a loop being built but rather a series of freakin' TOLL WAYS!  > No, Austin is no more of  haven for alternative lifestyles than any other metro area in the state. Come for visit and a beer, enjoy the music and scenery! Quote
L-Train Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 the Home of Country Music. Tangent.  I am from Nashville originally, but I would go to Austin in a heartbeat.  If you are a fan of live music ... Nashville is NOT the place to go. Sorry, this is my vent.  Good Country music is my second hobby right behind bass fishing. The Country Music coming ouf of Nashville now is pathetic IMO.  The only, what I consider real country music is coming mostly from Texas right now.  I love Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Merle, Hank, Hank Jr., etc.  Those guys sang real country music.  Now a days you turn on the radio and you get to hear crap like "HonkyTonkbadonkadonk" and  "She thinks my tractor is sexy" (Kenny Chesney has pec implants by the way).  Guarantee you Waylon rolls over in his grave everytime crap like that is played.  I won't even start on Big N Rich b/c I get R-Rated. It saddens me that guys like this make a living performing "country" music and guys/bands like Jason Boland and The Stragglers, Reckless Kelly, Wade Bowen, Stoney Larue, Mike McClure, Randy Rogers Band and many others only tour the honky tonks in Texas. But then again, I get to see all these guys at my local bar b/c they love what they do.  Again, Sorry, that is my vent.  The topic of Austin vs. Nashville comes up a lot down here in Texas.  Quote
Deb Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Hands down, the choice is clear...Austin. Â Here are the cons of being in Nashville... Â 1. Â You'd be too close to Mom. Â 2. Â You might have to endure more of Mom's cooking. Â 3. Â Mom's 160 lb rottie might figure out he's been mistaking you for a "good guy" and turn on you. Â 4. Â Your Mom might have heart failure from seeing you more than once or twice a year. Â 5. Â You'd have to endure the ENDLESS Buttkickings bass fishing your Mom would give you! ;D ;D Now that I've thought it out more...NASHVILLE is the ONLY OPTION Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 23, 2007 Super User Posted May 23, 2007 L-Train, I hear Rascal Flatts signed an exclusive with your local bar and the whole group is moving to Austin. Some of their "Special Guests" will include Shania Twain, The Dixie Chicks and friends. Is that true? Â Â : Quote
L-Train Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 RoadWarrior, I can promise you if Rascal Flatts stepped foot on any local bar here in Texas, they would make it through about a half song before they were booed or beaten off the stage. Â There are a few (I said a few) of the artists in Nashville who aren't bad. I don't mean to knock anybody's taste in music, b/c obviously i am in the minority or Kenny Chesney and the other no talent hacks wouldn't be big stars. Â I like what country music used to be. Â And the closest thing to what it used to be is mostly in Texas. Â I am not one of those guys who thinks everything in Texas is better either. Â I am a Razorback, I hate everything about Texas...except for the music, Amistad, Fork, Rayburn, Toledo Bend... Â 8-) Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 23, 2007 Super User Posted May 23, 2007 I know, I was just jerking your chain. Rascal Flatts is the most popular or at least the most successful band around right now, but that doesn't make them "Country." Shania? Comon' give me a break... Quote
L-Train Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I know you are just jerking my chain, this is just one of those topics that gets me fired up . Â Luckily there is a very good internet radio station that plays good country music for free. Â If you want good country music go to www.radiofreetexas.org Not everything is good, but it is way better than anything on country radio today. Â Quote

I guess I get caught up in some of the aggie hype a little too much. Then again, you guys think aggies all "herd" goats for a living. ;D No harm was intended! I hear you about the tollways. (although a toll-less loop would be better) That's all they're talking about around DFW too. They probably purposely put off highway develop to make us want to pay for improvements. -Fisher Quote

Fisher of Men Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 FOM, Razorback vs Longhorn vs Aggie Feels like football season 100 days 3 hours 06 minutes 41 sec until opening kickoff! You bet man!! I sure hope we are stronger this year. If not for some VERY (bonehead) conservative play calling by Fran, last year could have been WAY different. . . at least we may not have had to face a Cal team that had our number. AND: A matchup with the 'Hogs. . . well, I don't think the Ags have played them since the SWC days, have we? That would be great considering my in-laws have lived in AK for the past 15 years. Gig'em Ags!! Quote
L-Train Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Let's don't talk about bonehead coaches. Â Nutt is a joke. Â Will be nice to watch Darren McFadden for one more year. Â Quote

Your Mom might have heart failure from seeing you more than once or twice a year. 5. You'd have to endure the ENDLESS Buttkickings bass fishing your Mom would give you! ;D ;D And now a point by point dismantling of Mom's argument: 1) I currently live in Florida because the state of Kentucky has a lifestyle far too slow for me. However, Nashville is only a 2 hour flight from West Palm Beach. 2) I am a better cook than mom. That's right, I went there. 3) Jake (Mom's rottweiler) likes me more anyway. 4) I would hate to kill my own mother. 5) Mom CANNOT outfish me. She has been ducking me for YEARS. : We'll see who is boss when she comes to visit this summer. Â Quote
Deb Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 WPD, here's a dismantle to your dismantling... 1.  2 hr drive to Nashville, 2+ hr wait at airport, 2 hr flight to West Palm, 17 hrs in WP traffic.  Nope not worth it, cuts into my fishing time way too much. 2.  Better cook, I don't think so.  That's why we went out to eat all the time we were there.  Plus there's the frequent calls "Mom, how do I cook ???"  by the way, is there a Chic-fil-a close to your new apt? 3.  Jake is a lover not a fighter, at least with most people.  I don't advise strangers to try it! 4.  I'm glad you don't want to kill me, I have enough enemies.  But remember, I brought you into this world and by law, I can take you out. 5.  Outfish me??  I've got pics to prove mine!  As for who's the boss, women have forever been letting men think they're the boss but we all know who rule the roost  but I'll be more than happy to refresh your memory when I get down there as to who catches more and bigger Bass!
