Super User burleytog Posted May 21, 2007 Super User Posted May 21, 2007 My club has a kid's day tournament every year on a local municpal reservoir. It is stocked with trout and closed, then opened for fishing on the following Saturday. This is my first year with the club and I'm quite excited about it. I know there will be lot of people there who will only be there to 'cheat' and catch their kid's fish for them. We divide into 4 age groups (4-16), give prizes and trophies, provide lunch for the kids, and basically give them a day of free fishing (costs $12 to fish lake the rest of the year). My contribution is a tackle bag stocked with: Glenn graciously allowed me to also donate a $25 gift card in the name of BassResource.com. On a somewhat bad note, our local Wal Mart would not help us in the least bit. They wouldn't even meet personally with the club president when he went to talk to them. But, on the bright side, a WM about 50 miles away picked up the slack and offered us a great deal of help. I guess the local store doesn't know that they just missed out on $6000 of sales. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted May 21, 2007 Super User Posted May 21, 2007 You should throw in a pack of trailer for the jig and that perfect sets of lures to give away. You got your topwater, crankbaits, jigs, soft plastics, and hooks for softplastics. Nice thing your doing. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 21, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 21, 2007 I've actually got a couple of jars of Uncle Josh trailers at home that I'm going to throw in. All of that is just what I picked up today. Also have a couple more jigs and some 1/8 oz. leadheads. Was thinking of throwing in some line and another crankbait , but I was already over $50. If I had an decent extra rod lying around, I would throw a like new Quantum casting reel on it and give that away as well. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 21, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 21, 2007 Quote Nice thing your doing. One thing I have become increasingly passionate about over the last year is getting kids into fishing and hunting. I bought the stuff with the idea of giving a teenager a leg up at getting started with bass fishing. I started to buy a few trout-type lures to throw in, but I decided to stick with the bass basics. I can't wait till Saturday to see some kid's eyes light up when they get the Plano bag full of baits. Also thinking about giving a BASS membership or Jr BASS membership as another prize (even though my club isn't BASS affliated). Quote
The Unabasser Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 good job Burley!!! at the kids tourny last year (74 kids showed) there was no cheating that anyone observed...there was a kid around 10 that landed a Carp about 8lbs all by himself...he had a lil coaching on keeping line tight and using the drag but he landed it by himself.... Shad_Master Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Kudos on what your doing -- about 46 years ago I fished in a "fishing derby" in my hometown -- I won my very first rod/reel by catching the big fish of the pond with my cane pole. It was an abu garcia round reel on a 5' aluminum rod spooled with dacron braided line. I used that set up to learn to cast and caught many a fish with it. As a result, I am still fishing today, but not having the same level of payback -- memories last a life time, and sometimes beyond. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Way to go Burley. When dealing with WM, You need to call ahead for an appointment (made through the store manager) with the "community director". This is the route we take with CAST for kids. Also, Call early (Jan) as they make their budget early and only have "X" amount to dish out. Be the 1st in line. We'll, 2nd, behind me,lol Also, Invite the Jr team to come help the other kids. It's a perfect fit. Kids teaching kids. Kudos to your club. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 22, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 22, 2007 We've been trying at our local store since February. No dice. The club treasurer just called the one over in KY for the heck of it about two weeks ago. More than willing to help in any way they can. The problem with the local store is the manager. Not a people person. Jr team? Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Jr Bassmasters This is a few of them at last yrs event-kids helping kids Doesn't have to be bassmasters, any youth team will do. As for the politics between groups, BASS, FLW, ABA TPW,etc, the kids override that, everyone gets along for the kids. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 25, 2007 Super User Posted May 25, 2007 Our club helps out with the yute events in the greater Richmond area. We are having the Yute Fishing Day at Hanover County Park on June 2nd and then taking about 40 kids in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, along with the six teachers, fishing later this summer. The smile on a kid's face when he catches something is priceless. You did good, Burley. Keep up the good work. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Burley, please take some pics and share with us Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 25, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 25, 2007 Me not take photos Russ? Hell, if you guys only knew how many photos I take in a week... Actually I am the designated photographer for the thing. Suits me fine as I'm not that good with kids (no patience) and I fancy myself a photographer. Which reminds me, need to charge some batteries. As for the junior team, we have nothing of the sort in the area (at least that I know of). Have to be 16 to join our club. Quote
