J. M. Richardson Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 There are a couple Gander mountain stores near my house in Southeast Wisconsin, but they are much higher priced than Cabela's (a bit of a drive but a much better selection) and sportsman's warehouse. I do recommend Gander Mountain's Black Magic Plastic Worms though - they make a good substitute for the high cost Senkos Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted April 21, 2008 Super User Posted April 21, 2008 when i was a youngin gander mountain was my fav catalog ..doesnt GM have a deal with cabelas to not have a catalog anymore ??? Quote
wgilfus81 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 I have to agree with BadKarma here. Was excited, now just irritated with GM> I had a goo dexperience just the other day with their return policybut this was really nothing outside what I would generally expect as far as customer service. I would much rather drive to Bass Pro or order offline if I have the time. Gander has slowly but surely slid down my list of places to shop for outdoor gear, if it wasnt so close and Wal Mart such a horrible experience, I probably wouldnt shop there at all Quote
TeamBerettaGold Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Generally the Gander mountain where I go, sheboygan WI, has a decent selection, yes a little more $ than SW, but I can deal with it. I was shocked when I went in there last friday to buy some more line, that the whole store was stocked to the brim. Now mind you our fishing season opens next weekend and has a lot to do with this, but they are generally pretty decent about stocking, sometimes a little slow on the restock. I was dumbfounded to find out that they had a nice selection of the new strike king stuff, red eye shads (in SS!) and some series 1xs-series 5's. So the baitmonkey got the best of me and I ended up dropping a ton of money on stuff I didnt need, but them's the breaks I guess. It seems to me that it all depends on the location of the store. The sheboygan store carries a ton of lake michigan trolling gear, tons of it, and not a whole lot of bass gear, and a good bit of other useless fishing stuff for those things they call walleye, perch and bluegill. So I guess what Im saying is, it varies from store to store what kind of tackle they carry. But GM is leaps and bounds better then any Dicks I have ever been in, in WI. Quote
Tpayneful Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Redneck, I went to Greentops too. They don't sell Pline Fluorocarbon line. They told me that they just don't have the space to add another line. They only had one spool of 15lb Seaguar Invisix and I bought it but I needed two spools not one. Life will be much better when the BPS opens this fall. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 22, 2008 Super User Posted April 22, 2008 I like the Gander Mountain by me. It has a good selection and nice staff to go with it. The only bad thing is that they are expensive. I can get most of the stuff I fish with at Dicks at a much cheaper price but there genearally is no one working in the fishing department at Dicks. When I want real customer service I go to Gander Mountain and my local tackle shop but the best prices I go to Dicks. Quote
kms399 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Gander will price match if it is local, no internet adds. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 22, 2008 Super User Posted April 22, 2008 The fishing selection at Gander Mtn depends on the the location. I've been to one in Fredericksburg, Va and one in Ashland, Va. the Fredericksburg on was pretty weak, although the newer one in Ashland was VERY well stocked. They also had an exceptional gun selection for a retail chain. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Dan, if you liked the Ashland store, you would love the Winchester store. Ashland was a little disappointing to me. Quote
MadGator Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 I live in Madison, WI. Up until a couple years ago we only had Gander as a big outfitter. Two Dicks stores were added a couple years ago. I'd say Dick's was a bit cheaper, and because the two stores (Gander and Dick's) were literally across the street from one another the Gander's were forced to lower prices. Gander had a better overall selection, but both had the necessities. I remember Dick's getting the first Chatterbaits a couple months before Gander though. Now Gander has closed both stores (that was awesome, 20-40% discounts on everything, I am stocked for the season), this weekend they are opening a new 90,000 sq ft store about 5 minutes from my house. I will be there for the grand opening this weekend. I believe it to be one of, if not the, biggest stores. I'll let everyone know how it is. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted April 23, 2008 Super User Posted April 23, 2008 The closest Gander Mountain to me (about eight miles) is a big disappointment. About three years ago they down-sized their fishing department. To make things even worse, they are always out of stock on so many items, I try not to even frequent their store. I will say this, they do have a bigger selection than Dick's. There is another store about forty miles from my house that has a MUCH bigger and better stocked fishing department. I don't have a Sportsman's Warehouse near me, so I can't make the comparison. Falcon Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 The gander mountains by me have good selections but I won't buy from them. They are the single most overpriced outdoor store I have ever come across. I bought a gun from them this past winter (only because they were the only ones carrying the specific gun I wanted) and they charged me almost $100 over MSRP. Remington Core-Lokt ammo in 30/06 was almost $45. For those of you who don't hunt/shoot, you can get the exact same ammo for $20 at BPS. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted April 23, 2008 Super User Posted April 23, 2008 Our local GM's have been closing out Yo-Zuri Hybrid for a little over $4 a 275yd spool. Too bad I found out too late. I did manage to get some 4lb though. Last week I saw a very informative seminar at a local GM on nighttime bassin' by none other than Bass Resource forum member eyedabassman. Quote

lknbassman Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Better than Dicks by a long shot, no Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas that's for sure... Have not been in the other store you mentioned but think of it as a tier 2 outdoors store where BPS and Cabelas would be among the top tackle wise along with speciaty shops. Quote
mike bat Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 i love gander ... i go there when i have a few bucks to spend and want some baits ... you have to check the bins close ... the best buys are in the bargin bins ... ive found mans cranks ,, manns stone jigs ,,, baby boo jigs ,,, tungusten weights ,, and a ton of other great baits ... the manns cranks were like 1.89 and the stone jigs were a buck same as the baby boo jigs THE TUNGSTON WEIGHTS WERE 2.50 ,, i always check the bins ... most times i go to the bins first ....great way to stock your box Quote
Chode2235 Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 We have Gander Mountain's on practically every corner here in MN. Likely because I think they are headquartered here. They are price competetive, and typically have a good selection too. They do, however, have fantastic sales. They must not every want to keep out of season inventory as they let it go for CHEAP. I think they have some sort of relationship with Bass Pro, as the ones up here sell Tracker boats now... Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 We've had one here for a year now,and although it's no BPS it's got a pretty big selection of baits that I only hear about.Price is not that bad considering I'm buying baits that were totally unavailable before.Their Senko series is actually $1.00 cheaper than anywhere I've ever bought them before. Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 30, 2008 Super User Posted April 30, 2008 One just opend here in Palm Beach a couple weeks ago. I wasn't impressed. Prices were no better than anywhere else. I asked the clerk behind the counter in the fishing section if they carried Yo-zuri fishing line. His reply was "Uh, I didn't know Yo-zuri made fishing line. Just lures." Quote
