michbass Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I Have had great luck with Protien shakes and Creatine. Eat alot of quaility meals throughout the day. Your after workout shake is the most important get carbs in at that time also. As far as workouts stick with compound movements (squat, deadlift, bench press) as your first movent for that day,as they will add the most mass. I like a four day spilt: Legs/Abs Chest/Triceps?Calves Back/Biceps Shoulders/Delts/Calves Quote

Super User Sam Posted May 17, 2007 Super User Posted May 17, 2007 Yes, I go to a personal trainer now to try to drop 10 pounds for my son's wedding in July. I ache all over today but I feel great. Only problem is that I keep my stuff in my locker at the fitness center and my wife has a fit since I do not bring it home to wash it after every use. I do wear a fresh tee-shirt every time I work out (try for three times a week) so I don't smell that bad, ;D Remember, Be Thin, Be Happy! Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 17, 2007 Super User Posted May 17, 2007 One more piece of advice: Do not worry about the amount of weight you lift; the reps are the most important. Use a weight that is comfortable and do 10 to 15 reps for three sets, each, resting about 60 seconds between reps. Like 15 pound dumbells until you can move up to the 20 pound dumbells. Lift up and down for a full range of motion; don't cheat. You can then increase your weight as you develope your muscles. And don't forget your legs. You are only as good as your legs. So work on your leg strength, too. When I played sports in high school, I would work on upper body one day and lower body the next and then mix them up every now and then to break up the routine. Your school coaches can also give you some tips, especially the "movement specific" exercises to help improve your moves for specific sports (and fishing, too). Have fun and remember, if your muscles hurt your body is telling you something. Rest and then go back to your workout schedule. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 My life is a workout. Between emptying my UPS truck and filling it back up everyday and then launching a boat by hand and reeling in all those bass on the weekends,....man, I'm beat! Sam makes some good points. DON'T CHEAT! (you are only cheating yourself) Quote
Super User cart7t Posted May 17, 2007 Super User Posted May 17, 2007 I joined 24hr fitness gym. Lost 20lbs, stopped going for around 2 months, gained it back. ;D Seriously, I'm still paying so I'm back at it soon. At 50, the first thing I noticed as well as others noticed about me was more stamina, especially lifting and climbing hills or stairs. 2nd, far less joint pain. It was unbelievable how much more limber my joints feel. No aching and cracking when getting out of a chair. Quote

logger Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Many good points here so far. Yes use compound exercises because they stimulate the natural release of testosterone which in turn =muscle= weight. Good form will produce better gains than poor form with more weight. Get calories soon after your workout (within 45 min) this is the time your muscles are most straved for nutrients. Eat many small meals as opposed to 3 big ones. Your body will digest the food more completely and also keep your metabolism high, naturally. Eat lean protien, lots of fruits and veggies. (Tuna is awesome because its cheap and only 90 calories per can and packed with protien) Figure out you BMR and TMR so you know how many calories you need to be consuming. Do that here. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ Dedication to your diet, gym time, and research will get you where you want to be. Does your school have a powerlifting team? Might be something to consider joining. I highly reccomend staying away from supplements. They are not evaluate by the FDA for safety. (remember Ephedra?) I know they are appealing and some may work, but the long term effects are not yet know for many of these supplements. You goals are not going to be found in a bottlle or pill. I am a strength and conditioning teacher and former pro athlete. If I can be of anyhelp PM me. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 dang 2950 calories a day is what I need. Do krispy cremes count. : Really though, easy fluid movements and stay off the pills like logger said. Do the weight your comfortable with. If you lift real heavy all you will do is hurt yourself. bassdocktor Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Something I feel is important to add here based on alot of bad information people have gotten. You don't need to stay away from all supplements. I say this having sat through 2 semesteres of advanced anatomy and physiology and having spent the last 3-4 years researching and taking a few things. Creatine- is ok when you start looking at studies. For a little while now they have even been using it to treat parkinsons. Plus it you do receive it in meat anyway. Just don't take more that 5grams a day and make sure you drink alot of water. Thats the biggest reason people experience negative side affects. Creatine is naturally used by the body. Protein shakes- Something very worth your money since as you all probably know muscles are made of proteins. They are a great way to get additional protein if you are someone who just doesn't eat enough. IF you are going to buy one buy Whey protein and not soy protein unless you have a specific reason/condition that requires you to need soy over whey. Soy protein has been shown to contain estrogen or estrogen promoting compounds which will hinder your progress. Vitamins- A good multivitamin helps keep your body balanced especially if your diet isn't the greatest and even if it is. Amino Acids- Unless you are really going at it hardcore possibly a watse a of money. However if you are serious they have been shwon in many studies and trial to increase both strength and lean muscle mass. There haven't been and side effects shown with these either. Again something naturally occuring in the body and used to build proteins whichs translate into muscle. Nitric Oxide- While many believe that this will help you get very big and quick alot of studies have shown it to be a waste of money. Again it does naturally occur in trhe body and is used to dialate your blood vessels. People I have talked to have said it will enlarge your muscles or give you a "pump." I'm not really sure abotu side affects. Diet supplements- Something to becareful with because like Logger said there was the ephedra problem awhile back. Alot of them contain large amounts of stimulents and will elevate your heart rate quite abit and obviously can lead to problems. Thats not to say that there aren't reputable diet supplements. Tribulus- This one is an herb that is shown to boost testosterone levels. No it isn't a steroid and is very legal. However, it doesn't work for everyone. It isn't going to raise your levels by an extreme amount but it can give you a helpful muscle building boost. I don't recall the actual side affects but I didn't come across anything that was not corrected by just stopping taking it. I've talked to people and taken it and no one experienced any problems. These are just a few of the more popular supplements that are currently available. Again I'm not an expert but what I said came from my own research, experience, and classes take with a teachers that had an MD and PHD. Like I said I feel it is important to correct the misinformation that is out there. bassdocktor Quote

timmyswetarded Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Something I feel is important to add here based on alot of bad information people have gotten. You don't need to stay away from all supplements. Agree Creatine- is ok when you start looking at studies. For a little while now they have even been using it to treat parkinsons. Plus it you do receive it in meat anyway. Just don't take more that 5grams a day and make sure you drink alot of water. Thats the biggest reason people experience negative side affects. Creatine is naturally used by the body. you can actually get a different kind of creatine that is better. most people use the creatine monohydrate because it is so common. i know of one company that makes a creatine ester ethlo.....something and you dont have to drink as much water and you wont cramp up like with the regular stuff. Soy protein has been shown to contain estrogen or estrogen promoting compounds which will hinder your progress. once again i agree. you should try a "weight gainer" im sure they will have these at your local nutrition store Vitamins- A good multivitamin helps keep your body balanced especially if your diet isn't the greatest and even if it is. Amino Acids- Unless you are really going at it hardcore possibly a watse a of money. Again it does naturally occur in trhe body and is used to dialate your blood vessels. People I have talked to have said it will enlarge your muscles or give you a "pump." I'm not really sure abotu side affects. i use this, and yes it does give you a pump. just be sure, like with everything else, not to take too much. NO is supposed to enlarge the blood vessels so that the creatine and other stuff can completely saturate your muscles. oh and i can see a physical difference in the size of my blood vessels. i have not experienced any side effects. Diet supplements- Something to becareful with because like Logger said there was the ephedra problem awhile back. Alot of them contain large amounts of stimulents and will elevate your heart rate quite abit and obviously can lead to problems.
