WhiteMike1018 Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Well it was a nice day today and I figured Id go out fishing, my partner i usually go with was working so I was forced to go by myself. I got to the private pond I always fish, got out of my car and realized i left my wormbag at home. > SUCKS!!!! So of course I go back and get it. But this time I went to a different private pond I always fish got out of my car and walked up to the field that you must walk through to get to it. Now let me start by saying for some weird reason I have extreme bee anxiety. Whenever I see one of those big bumble bees or carpenter bees, I get really scared, its the weirdest thing. And of course the worst, those big red resin bees with the orange tail. Now Im not talking about wasps or honeybees, Im talking about the giant bees. So of course the entire field was all filled with beautiful flowers, and unfortunately the scariest looking bees Ive ever seen. Just to let you know how bad the anxiety really is, I would rather walk through a field of king cobra snakes, and feel much safer.....and im being dead serious. So instead of just enjoying a nice day of fishing I was forced to turn around and come back home. Soounds a bit extreme, but no one knows how this feels. And the sounds they give off, is also what gets me going. I just dont know... Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I can understand that. When one of my sisters was young she was picking blueberries at our farm, and stuck her hand into a yellow jackets nest. She got stung about 30 times. Never seen a 10 year old run that fast! Poor kid. FWIW, I don't trust horses. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted May 8, 2007 Super User Posted May 8, 2007 I kind of know what you mean. My dad is SEVERELY allergic to bee stings. If he gets hit, I have to give him an artificial adrenaline shot and get him to the hospital in a very short time. Its pretty scary. Anaphyllactic (sp?) shock is no joke. Because of this, I have been a hardcore bee hunter since I was about 8. Everytime we would come across one, he would run and I would kill, LOL. I am not afraid of bees at all, but rattlesnakes....F that! Those things make me squeal like a little girl. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted May 8, 2007 Super User Posted May 8, 2007 Speaking of things that we're all afraid of, I know a guy where I work who is afraid of fish! Serious business!! He has a serious case of Ichthyophobia. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I were afraid of fish. Quote
RecMar8541 Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I dont mind bees, nor snakes, I hate spiders! Their sneeky....and they just look horrid! Id rather jump into a tank of sharks wearing pork chop underwear than mess with a spider......seriously! Quote
edbassmaster Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Mike, nobody is as scared of ANY bugs as my wife, I guarantee!! But those bees are harmless. Carpenter or Bumblebee, they are actually non aggresive, and I would even say friendly. We had one in the house the other day, I nudged it on my hand, cupped it, than went outback and let em go. We have a deck outback so we always get carpenter bees. I go on my deck and hold out my hand and they will come near me. They are extremely docile. If you ever held one you will see there is nothing to be afraid of. Wasps on the other hand hurt like hell, I got stung on my eyelid by one and for two weeks I look like Mike Tyson beat me up. Trust me Mike, they will not hurt you unless you are trying to hurt them. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I keeppmy boat at a lake where threr is a bar around the boat mooring and you put the bow on the bar and thstern on the grass . upside down Every year we get a couple of HORNET NESTS in the freaking bow ANYONE KNOW HOW TO PREVENT THIS? Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 8, 2007 Super User Posted May 8, 2007 Mike, Don't ever go to Brazil. The bees down there are like flying horses. I have NEVER seen bees that big in my life! I for one, am PETRIFIED of driving on bridges. My hands are getting sweaty just thinking about it. Quote
cpvenom Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I really dont have any fears of animals. At school I would tie carpenter bees to strings and have a "bee on a leash". On sunday I chased and caught a 3 foot watersnake (with my hands) while I was fishing on the bank. I saw about 7 total, and I was really excited! Quote
Super User Root beer Posted May 9, 2007 Super User Posted May 9, 2007 I am not afraid of bees at all, but rattlesnakes....F that! Those things make me squeal like a little girl. Right on dude! When I see a bee I dont get anxiety attack or anything, but I'd like dodge it and try to avoid it because I hate being stung, But if I see a snake I go crazy. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted May 9, 2007 Super User Posted May 9, 2007 If you are afraid of bugs and snakes don't grow up in deep South Louisiana like I did. It seems that almost everything has a painful bite and most are poisonous. And then there are the gators. Kinda sounds like parts of Florida doesn't it? Although I miss LA at times, I'm VERY glad I moved to Tulsa. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted May 9, 2007 Super User Posted May 9, 2007 I'm from a small town in Alabama, I lived in country side, I learn to deal and ignore bugs, but snakes I just alway try to kill them when I see them, I just dont like being around them. Quote

I know some common water snakes look like copperheads and vice versa. Quote
Cephkiller Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Spiders are my thing. I scream like a little girl. My wife actually kills them for me :-[ Snakes are no problemo. Heck, I'll even fight through a grizzly bear if I have to. I am pretty much fearless except for the spider thing. It's embarassing. I've thought of trying to get treatment for this, but I hate them so much I don't even want to like them. Does that make sense? BTW, Mike, if you are just seriously creeped out by the bees, I understand (because of my spider thing), but the carpenter bees don't even have a stinger. Seriously, look it up. The large ones that are really scary and look like bumblebees are the males and they are stingerless. The females are smaller and resemble a yellow jacket only they have more black than yellow. The females do have stingers, but are really docile. You almost have to grab or smash one to get stung. Honeybees are the same way, really docile. Bumblebees are a little scary, I must admit. I'm not really aware of their personality because I give them a wide berth. Quote
Fish Man Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 man i know how tht is. except im not terrified of em.when i was really little me an all the kids that lived near by would walk down to a pond about a half mile from our houses.there were things that we called mud dobbers (not sure if this is the real name) but they lived in the ground kinda like a hornewt i guess, never really got a good look at one and we had to walk across a field to get to the pond.well our luck this field had tons of em and we would try an sneak by em but they would always hear us or somthing an come out.many times we had to walk back into town and onto the railroad track and follow them right to the pond because of the stupid things BTW hey cephkiller im afraid of spiders to man i have to kill everyone i see or get somone to kill it for me.a rule i live by is if it has more than 4 legs to watch out lol Quote
GeneinTX Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I once had about an 8" inch centipede in my living room. I freaked out and smashed it to pieces with a hammer. That thing triggered my fight or flight mecanism. i flew out to the garage and then pummeled it. I haven't had any problems since so I think word is out to the other centipedes. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I can stand bees. But I cant stand the rodent family. I also cant stand big bugs or hairy spiders. I found out my buddy cant stand bugs at all. We were fishing one day by a dock. Than all of a sudden he starts going crazy. So hes like Erik look at that spider. It scares the crap put of me. It looked like a wolf spider. But I have never seen one that big. It was about 4 inches long and about 2 inches wide. That was from front legs to back legs and left legs to right legs. I hope i never run in to a spider that big agian. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted May 9, 2007 Author Posted May 9, 2007 Thanks for the replys everyone. Im trying my best to overcome this anxiety. Ill keep you posted on how I am doing -WM Quote

Pack the hull with towels before you flip the boat. I am also allergic to bees, I carry an epi-pen with me all the time during bee season. ( I must look like a real winner, 2 self admitting shots on board all the time, adrenaline and imitrex) I don't mind them though. I don't bother them, they don't bother me. (unless you count the one that stung me in the throat after he found his way into my pepsi can and got swallowed, lol) Quote

If fishing is really slow, I can often be found looking for snakes and lizards, especially in florida. Quote
