Bream Master Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 It is too, too light to throw in B.C. I'm using MH to H with 50 lb. braid and it feels like I'm casting a fly. I hate it because I can't get distance and I have to be extra soft with the cast or I'll get backlash. Anyone else feel this way or just me? Does anyone throw this on spinning gear with braid? Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted January 12, 2007 Super User Posted January 12, 2007 I have never had that problem with any frog, let alone a bronzeye. What rod are you using and how "tight" is your reel set? Quote
Bream Master Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Both the rods I use are Gander Mtn. IM8 graphite rods. Very sturdy with fast action tip. I just got a St. croix for Christmas and I have not tried the frog in this rod yet. My reel is a Daiwa Procaster. The horny toad is okay in weight for me to throw on the BC, but the spro frog is just too light. I mean, I can throw it, but it won't go far. I have the brakes on 2 and the spool knob isn't that tight. At most, I'm only getting a 25 feet cast on the frog. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted January 12, 2007 Super User Posted January 12, 2007 i allways use spinning tackle for frogs. MH rod and 2500 reel. Quote
cabela10 Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Spro's are the only frogs I use and I have never had any issues with them while casting. I can toss those babies out at least 40yards. I use a Shimano Castaic on a 6'6" MH Fast action St. Croix with 30lb Sufix Braid. Quote
Guest avid Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Something is wrong. Either in your spool tension setting, or your presentation. All of the hollow body frogs I have used including the spro, cast very will on bc gear. I use 50 lb braid and a heavy power rod. When was the last time you cleaned your reels and lubed up that spool? Guest Texas_Bass_Pro Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Avid--- What brand of line do you use that will allow you to throw 50lb braided line on a Baitcaster. I have a hard time throwing 17lb mono line on my baitcaster. LOL But seriously, what brand do you use. If you don't mind sharing. Quote
Valascus Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I am not avid, but when I am chuckin' a hollow body frog I am definitely using some PowerPro 50lb braid. (if I have some on hand). I would not categorize a Spro Bronzeye Frog as a "light" lure. The larger sizes weigh in at 5/8 oz. The new Jr. version (if ya wanna call it that) is 1/2oz. I use a H action BPS Extreme rod paired with a Shimano Citica for my froggin' and don't really have a problem casting it. When I do have a problem casting it, it is normally "self Induced" just due to lack of practice with my casting gear. Quote

I throw 25lb big game mono big game when I throw sammy 100, pointer 100, etc. What reel are you throwing it on? try the new spiderwire ultracast. It casts alot better than ordinay braid Quote
BASSMACHINE Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 It sounds like you are throwing this bait with a 7'6" flippin stick. I had this same problem. The long handle on the rod makes it more difficult to cast "I am only 5'7". To check to see if this is your problem take your reel and put it on a 6'6" or a 7' rod and try casting the spro with it. If you get more distance I suggest buying a 7' Heavy rod for this presentation. It is what I had to do. The more comfortable rod handle length more than tripled my casting distance! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I use a 7'1" xheavy with 30lb braid. The spro bronzeeye casts like a rattletrap. The thing just zings out there. I can cast it so far if I get a bite I cant get a good hookset. Quote
HPBB Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Something is wrong with his gear I throw 40pound spiderwire stealth and have no problem with it. I throw lures as light as 1/8oz and senko's weightless. That frog is not to light I have used my flippin stick a few times and still can cast it good. Something is wrong. either you need to learn your BC better, Your breaks or magnets are set wrong, the braid has cut a channel in your eyelits on your rod and its getting stuck or something is wrong with the reel Quote
lubina Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Like Avid said, check the tension in your spool and make sure is lubricate. The Procaster is perfectly capable of castin a lure of that weight. I use a Rogue EH 7.0 with a TD-Z and Sufix braid 50 lbs and I have no problems casting any lure. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 man guys, you sure use awful heavy line... I use 10lb mono on my BC and can cast SPRO frogs a country mile... Infact the first thing i noticed using them was that they where plenty heavy for BC gear... Maybe the heavy line has somthing to do with it? I dont get backlash using light mono, i can cast it forever, it holds alot a line, and i never have my line snap becuase of using lighter line... I cant see how you guys can fish with 50lb braid and 20lb mono, thats like rope to me. JM.02 Quote

harshman Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I agree that it might be something wrong with your gear setup. I can cast a bronzeye a country mile on a 7'6 flippin rod with 30lb test and a Daiwa Tournament Procaster. I love these frogs. The only reason I use heavy braid is due to most of the places I fish it it's not the fish i'm worried about it is the 30lbs of moss and crap i have to reel in when the fish misses the bait and submerges it though the salad. Chris Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 My guess is that your using a flipping stick that don't have enough load bend when you cast to make a distance cast. It is to stiff at the tip section. Quote
Supermat Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Definetely sounds like a reel problem. I use a snagproof instead of a Spro but that doesn't matter. I also use 65 lb Spectrex and can cast a country mile. My first recommendation is to turn your brakes from 2 up to 4, then loosen up the spool tensioner significantly. I know that adding brakes sounds odd but you may be compensating for a lack in braking with spool tension and not knowing it. Do this, if your cast length diminishes or your backlashes get worse turn the spool tension back up a HAIR and try again then report back. Also, are you backlashing at the beginning of the cast or is it at the end of the cast? The backlash itself will tell you where the problem lies. Matt Quote

Also, your saying you cast it a mile. If you have a fish take it right after you start your retrieve, your hookset will have little penetration due to the high stretch whereas braid will hook up with maximum penetration from any distance. Super User burleytog Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 What is the tip action on the rod? I have a Fenwick Venture 7' MH (closer to H IMO) that has a very slow tip. The SPRO Bronzeye barely loads the tip. Then again, I mostly use it for throwing big (2-3 oz.) swimbaits, so I get plenty of load on the rod tip. Quote
Bream Master Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 The rod tips are fast action. Some of you guys mentioned how it didn't load well because of the stiff tip, which is true. I'm going to try it out again today and see what happens. Quote
HPBB Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I still don't think its a rod problem. I cast mine on flippinstick and have no propblem I think its your reel. I think you need to learn you reel better. change the setting and see what works. mess around with the breaks and tension. a rod change to a "lighter "rod might help, but I don't think its fixing the "problem" you saying that the frog feels like a fly, a 5/8 and 1/2 oz lures are not"light"lures Quote
Ky_Lake_Dude Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Are yo sure it was a bronzeye because that thing is 5/8 ounce and I have casted it with 65lb braid and 20lb mono and had no problems. Quote
Chris Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 You also might want to chech your line. Sometimes if you put braid on to tight or if you backlash it and don't realize it the line will cut into itself and make it hard to cast. Quote
