I spent 5 years working on commercial draggers from Shinnecock Inlet on Long Island and I will tell you straight, those guys are as hard core as it gets. I've been through 30 foot seas. The wall of water yoiu're looking at is about the scariest thing in the world. In a nutshell, there's no where to go. You are at the full mercy of the sea. You will not beat her, you won't tame her, you won't even get a chance to say goodbye if she doesn't want you to.

These guys, however, make what I did look like using a cane pole for sunnies. The camera doesn't come close to showing you what's actually happening. Remember, when the boat rolls in a sea, the camera rolls with it, so you can't really see how much she's pitching. I can't even imagine what a 50 ft wave looks like. Not to mention the ice. I have seen a boat roll from being iced up too much. It is not a pretty sight. Boats don't look good upside down. In order to avoid this, someone has to go up top and clear the ice. Ever tried walking around in heavy boots and foul weather gear? Pretty clumsy and slow. Now think of wearing that as you climb the mast. While its covered in ice. In 30 ft. seas. At night. Then, when you've finished, you've got to go do it again. That's not adventure, that's insane.

This turned out to be a little bit longer than I intended, but I would NEVER get back on a commercial fishing boat again unless I had no other means of supporting myself and family. And for anyone who thinks they want to get into the business, I'll give you the same advice my father gave me before my first trip: "There's not a single thing on that boat that won't kill you."

I love the show as well. I mean I might like to be a captain, but being a deckhand I dont know. MAYBE. If there was no other job for me, then I'll take it.

I rather be a captain then a deckhand.

The siren song of a big paycheck is quite tempting, but seeing what those guys go through snaps you back into reality.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to live a life on the sea, then I see shows like Deadliest Catch and I realize that it isn't the life for me.

I still would have to do it at least one time!! You only live once!

Knock yourself out man, you have made it clear three times that you would do it, so go do it and report back to us if you live through it.

I like the show and no the thought of being washed over board into freezing water and dying of hpothermia or drowning before they get me back on dosen't jive with me.  Screw the money I'll work at McDonalds and support my family, if I had too.   At least then I will still have them and them me.

i agree i would do it once but you would be hard pressed to get me to do it again, and like recmar said you only live once,in my opinion if you play it safe an sit around all your life that isnt really a life, i would rather have an exciting story to tell when i die rather than say " yea i jus sat on that chair staring at a tv screen all my life,,kinda like the tim mcgraw song "live like you were dying" if u ask me

I also like this show those guys are crazy.I've had 2 friends go to Alaska and crab fish both made it home safe. But they said it was big money and big risk. Up here in Maine we lost a bunch of lobster/fisherman last year was a bad year any job on the water is or can be a dangerous one. Those guys have brass balls...
