Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Man, the last few weeks at UPS have been sucking wind. Volume is down and we just lost Dell as an account. I am a cover driver and there are way too many of us right now. I've gotten 6 hrs this week. That's not gonna cut it. So, anyone need their boat unwinterized? Car washed? Guided "ice-out" lesson? Dog walked? I have also been throwing around the idea of starting an internet tackle biz or somthing internet related. Anyone?? It's snowing, need your driveway shoveled? Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 Have you ever considered guiding? From the looks of it, I think you can probably put some people on fish LOL Wayne Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 I have but there are many variables. A. Rhode Island has a short season and I would guide for both fresh and salt and THOSE seasons overlap as well. B. 1/2 yr season in RI C. Not enough demand here. If I were to do it, I would do it down south. This is somthing that is more and more appealing, the more I get involved with freshwater fishing. To do this, in the south, as a yankee,....I risk being shot. I assume. Up here a few of my friends guide and have been trying to get me to do it too, it's not so hostile because I worked side by side with these guys often putting them and their clients on fish with my knowledge of the bay from digging clams so long. I learned the fish routes and haunts by accidental observation. Anyway, if someone from the south came up here and tried to take biz from these guys, let's just say it's a dirty game. Your boat can sink at the dock overnight, or get stripped clean in an hour, stuff like that. I can't imagine it would be any different ifg I went and did that insomeone elses neighborhood. I wouldn't do that to another guide anyway. I'm not cutthroat enough to play those games. So.....now what? The next few years could prove to be very interesting for me. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 So, you are willing to move? Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 The main thing keeping me here right now is I have a really great set-up. I pay $425/mo for rent in a place that could easily pull 900-1000 on location alone. I would never find another place like this. But if I made enough where it were all relative.......bon voyage. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 Thats funny, kinda sounds like my living situation. I have an apartment, 420/mo rent. Dont want to move out b/c I am saving to buy a house and everything else around me is over 600/mo. I think you might fit in well further south. There are good people out there, usually they seek out their own. Wayne Quote
edbassmaster Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Hey LB... I dont know if you would want to do this...but my company Cingular/AT&T is always hiring, part time as well. If you were interested in learning more I could look into openings in your area and make some calls. This college kid Pat who works at one of my stores makes 35-40k a year working 20 hours a week. You have good communication/people skills ( your vids ) we could teach you the rest. Anyway its decent money for not doing much. The top sales reps in each store make a minimum of $50k and I know two guys who made over $75k last year. Anyway, let me know!! ED Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Man that sucks LBH. I picked up a part time job for awhile at a fishing/hunting store. If you come to this area I've got a some extra space in my house. Just bring your fishing stuff. Nothing fancy at all but ist a roof over my head. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 I'm not quitting UPS, by any means just yet. Things will pick up. This down time though is making me realize I don't want to do this forever, especially if it's going to be a rollercoaster. I'd like to set up somthing online that could also keep me free enough to pursue other part-time endeavors. That would be ideal. Quote
llPa1nll Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Sorry to hear about the slow down LBH. I hope things work out for you... Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 Transfer to Dallas UPS, then you and I can tag team some tourneys for extra cash. I'll make sure to have an extra bedroom waiting. No shovelling snow, no short season, salt water in not that far away, and you can pick 25 lakes within a 100 miles that can produce SAL's. Hookem Matt Now there's an offer that's right up your alley LBH! With all your capabilities on computers and videos maybe you could do some freelance work with that stuff to fill the downtime. My son is a school teacher and is great with computers.....he gets alot of work fixing computers and it seems like he can turn the work off and on at will. Quote
logger Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I have a friend who sells on ebay. She makes pretty good money as a second income. All she does is go to thrift/ second hand stores and buys thinkgs like slacks, khakis, anything of interest and sells it on ebay for a competative price. It might be worth checking into, or just sell your old stuff. Quote

Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 Any thoughts on Low-Budget-Hooking?? ;D Quote

Not all guides are cutthroat, boat sinkers. From what I have read in here you seem like a pretty good guy and I hope I am reading this wrong. I gave up guiding after going on 17 years as of last year. It is just to costly nowadays with fuel and license and such. I know a lot of guides who just enjoy watching the average fisherman catch fish. I always made a point that they had a good time if it was within my power. I also know a lot of other guides whom felt the same way. Granted, there are a few whom are dirty but, you have that element in all walks of life. I would be lying if I said that that one of the reasons I was a guide wasn't the money but, it went along with other reasons as well, as in it was fun. Dang, cut us some slack here. I never did anything to hurt anyone while guiding. If a new one came around he had to gain some respect, its just the name of the game but , if he was respectful, most of us would do all we could to help him get established. There are plenty of rivers and room for all of us. Good luck finding work, or moving on, whatever the case may be. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 No offence towards guides intended at all. I am saying it is understandable . Clients are food on the table for these guys families and another hand in the pot isn't alwyas "welcome". That's all I'm saying. If I were to do it in another state, I would surely establish myself in the community for a few years first. Minimum. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 Half the guides on Fork are not southerners. Tom is a transplant from Chicago. Plus half the population in Texas are not born and raised Texans. Russ would fit in because he has a knack for conversation with all types. I have never thought of were a guide is from, only what his reputation has earned him. Hookem Matt Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 16, 2007 Super User Posted March 16, 2007 My yard needs a good mowing and fertilizing. Garden also needs a good tillering. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Burley, I have a feeling that tilling your garden could get me arrested. (When can I start? hehe) Quote
fishbear Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 LBH, I hear they are hiring a bunch of guys to test shark bite suits... of course this requires you to get bitten by the sharks and hope the suit works ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Hey you would know how a bait fish feels................... : : : : Quote

skillet Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Didn't realize you had to deal with those kinds of situations working for them. Can't offer much in the way of help with ideas either. I'll just have to say that I sure hope everything comes out for the best and like roadwarrior says "roll with it"... As Ever, Skillet Quote
NATHAN_JAMES Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Russ no doubt things are shaky at UPS. IMO I think its some kind of ploy by the company because it's a contract year. Dell bounce because they don't want service interuptions they're laying up and playing it safe. Also we make d**n good pay. I think UPS is trying to scare us into taking 1 a pay cut 2 a freeze, because alot of guys will take the pay cut or freeze to keep their job, which i can't blame them ,I've recently been slapped with the golden had cuffs. Fellas, if you don't know what golden hand cuffs are they're a mortage and a kid and a job that sucks but pays well. Russ I think you should keep working your internet sales things keep net working and it will all fall together, maybe soon than you think, and keep UPS it's the ultamate in safty nets, so get cracking we could use the volume right now..... good night all ....oh yeah russ me and pete are going to RWPark sunday if your up for a ride or what ever.... Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 DEFINATELY up for a ride Sunday............on a plane to LAKE FORK!!! WOO HOOO!! Catch 'em up Nate!! Quote
