Fish Man Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 right now im in the middle of fighting a losing battle with my mom on whether or not i can get a dog for duck hunting.......if by sum maricle i convince her to let me what breeds do yall thinks the best??...i goldens an chesapekes seem good....but i would like to here wut ur opinions are thanx Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted March 2, 2007 Super User Posted March 2, 2007 Lab, Golden, Chesapeake That's the way I would go ... in that order. I have had a Golden and have a Lab right now. I pretty much view them as the same "breed" in a way. Very similar character and traits. A Golden requires a lot more maintenance with all their hair though. I think Chesapeakes by nature don't have as strong of drive to please than the two others. I believe they are a pretty stubborn dog and therefore a little hard to train. I do think they are the strongest swimmers out of the bunch though. Quote
Fish Man Posted March 2, 2007 Author Posted March 2, 2007 as far as the golden an the lab are they both about the same as far as how well they retrieve.....were we hunt swiming isnt much of an issue because we hunt a low area in a field that collects a little bit of water after rain no more than a foot or two deep an most of the ducks end up fallin in the feild not the water by the time we get to em and maintenance wont bother me much thanx Quote
Other. Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 IMO Goldens are good hunting dogs and the best; best freinds. Quote
Fish Man Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 i once had a golden just for a pet not for hunting an i can back up wut u said other...she was the nicest dog ever Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 3, 2007 Super User Posted March 3, 2007 Labs highly intelligent, very loyal and a great family pet Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 If you're looking for a retriever, a lab is the way to go. Had one for years and he was great at bringing back ducks and at being a family friend. Black, Chocolate, or Yellow, they're all prety much the same dog with different colored fur. Goldens are great, but they're also a very, er, "randy" breed. I've seen too many goldens that will hump anything they can get near. Quote
frogtog Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Go to the dog pound and get you a stray dog. Feed him one time and he'll do any thing you tell him. He will protect you property and everything else with his last breath. Don't know about feaching ducks, you might have to siwm to a couple of them to show him what he needs to do. Quote

I've seen too many goldens that will hump anything they can get near. I do agree with you on this. My dog would hump my leg when i was sitting on a chair. But that never quite bothered me as i would just pull my leg back. I miss my golden :'( Also like frogtog said, adopt a dog. Your saving his life and that is very important to him. Dogs that are not wanted get killed. After the dog sees how much love you give him compared to his previous owner he will be loyal to you, however some dogs are just wacky and you should really stay away from them. I always treated my pets as a living thing not "property" And by adoption your giving a dog the feeling of freedom. Quote
jayhawkfishin Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 I don't know what breed is better but please don't name the dog "drake" All duck hunting dogs are drake. Quote
56 crestliner Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 This is kinda off topic but have any of you seen silver labs. THose are nice looking dogs. Afreind of mine has one for goose and ducks, its a smart dog. Quote
NHfroggin Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 i do alot of duck hunting and i have a choc lab. labs are the best waterfowl hunting dogs. my choclate is 9 months old and she is already retriveing ducks and geese. VERY smart dogs. chesepeaks are very good also but they are very tempermental and if its going to be a family dog i would go with a lab Bassmaster6 Quote
IneedAnewScreenName9886691 Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 I am a certified duck junkie and I use Wirehairs. I have had 2 labs and love them as well. I am really in love with the GWP. Most versitle dog I have ever had and easy to train (at least the 2 I have had). Mine have been excellent retrievers, were both easy to break to wing and shot and have some of the best dispositions I have ever had the pleasure to be around. Retrieving ducks in the morning and pointing quail in the afternoon Quote
timmyswetarded Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Retrieving ducks in the morning and pointing quail in the afternoon and that is the key! ;D the next dog on my list will be a pointing lab (chocolate)...and ya know i might just name him drake Quote
flyphisher # Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I have a yellow lab. A female named Drake. Go with a lab. I trained mine myself using the book "Water Dog." Great duck dog and will hunt anything and she is house-trained. Do yourself a favor and go with a female lab. DO alot of research about picking a puppy that way you will know what to look for when you go to pick one out of a litter. Dont get one older than 8 weeks. I had mine retrieving in the water at 10 weeks old. Get them comfortable in water at soon as possible. If you have anymore questions IM me. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I got a black lab for duck hunting It Didnt help I COULDNT THROW THE DOG HIGH ENOUGH Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 10, 2007 Super User Posted March 10, 2007 My family has nothing but Labs. Ducks, quail, and pheasants. They do it all, and great family pets. Very intelligent and gentle dogs. Falcon Quote
senko_77 Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 I got a black lab for duck hunting It Didnt help I COULDNT THROW THE DOG HIGH ENOUGH Quote
Guest avid Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 the three choices you are considering are all excellent. But now for the mom factor. Labs are very affectionate, loyal, dogs. the Goldens are wonderful animals also but they shed like crazy. The Chesapeake is a great dog also but bred for the really cold waters of the north and so are not as "soft and fuzzy" as the other two. Put a lab puppy in moms arms, and the deal is done. Quote
SteveFinMD Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 It's hard to beat a lab. Your mom will love it too. Quote
Fish Man Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 i think my mom would rather have a golden.....im 14 now but from the time i was 2 until 13 we had a golden that was just a house pet not a retreiving dog an now all my mom wants is another BUT my dad says he dont want another because we have another dog thats esentually a MUTT an he says we need to wait a while an take care of this one + my mom told me if we ever get another golden that theres no way i could take it hunting ugh an to make matters worse i wont have the money to buy one on my own because i only have a little less than 2 summers to raise money for a truck....right now it seems like me an my bro will have to go solo for another year or too unless i can do some serius presuading Quote
cpvenom Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 My bud moose is a chocolate lab with a long line of champion hunting dogs, but he just fishes with me... You cant beat a good lab though Quote
lunchbox508 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Im throwin one out there that noone has said. Beagle. We have had a few hunting dogs in our family and my beagle Dude is the best for retrieving. He is a little bit slower but he is smarter and more loyal than the others.i would also suggest a lab though Quote
