Guest avid Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Last week there was a cool thread on rock/blues guitarists. SRV and Jimi dominated the discussion of course, but one song "little wing" came up a few times. I was running searches on it and found a cover by Concrete Blonde that I think is great. It focuses more on the vocals than the guitar work, but the guitar work is very crisp and makes the whole song move really well. It's on thier "Essential" album. Good rock and roll. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 i just listened to it and i hate to say it but i liked it. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 18, 2007 Super User Posted February 18, 2007 well to go with the rock/blues genre, I'd have to go with "Crossroads" by Robert Johnson as covered by Cream. Quote

BACK ON TOPIC, I usually listen mainly to bluegrass but also 70's and Southern Rock. Quote
Zel Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Joe Cocker's slower blues tempo cover of the Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends has more passion in it than the media's infatuation with Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith combined. Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Ya know I love a good music thread, so here goes... Brian Setzer Orch - Route 66 (Many have re-made this song, but this is the best) Long, Tall Sally - Beatles (Originally by Little Richard, I think) Jimmy Buffet - Uncle John's Band (Might sound corny, be he does an excellent version) Phish - The White Album (Every year they used to cover an album for their Halloween concert, this one is way beyond amazing!) Government Mule - She Said, She Said (Who'd have thought you could do the Beatles as Southern Rock) -Best I could come up with at this early hour of 9:30am after being at work until 2:30 am... Quote
skillet Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Zel, IMO, any cover Joe Cocker did has more passion than anything those 2 have ever done. I almost hate to put their names in the same sentence. I'm not a real fan of any of the "newer" female singers except for Norah Jones and have always been a BIG fan of Joe Cocker. This Xmas one of my daughters found his 2nd album on CD for me. It has my favorite cover of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire"... As Ever, Skillet Quote
Guest avid Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Anyone who appreciates RnB covers of standards absolutely MUST listen to James Brown sing "if I ruled the world". It is not just the best cover. it is the best version, and for those of you think JB is just another screaming soul singer. This song will give you a glimpse of why some folks call him a musical genius. Quote
Crabcakes Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Here are a few really good covers made in the last 10 years or so with links if you care to check them out: Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (probably the best version of this song) http://youtube.com/watch?v=zLQUdHMFpBQ Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's cover of Bob Marley's "High Tide, Low Tide" http://youtube.com/watch?v=o5FfEqsIrtY Jeff Buckley's cover of Abel Meeropol's "Strange Fruit" Though it became Billie Holiday's song. This one is one of my favorites. Unfortunately I don't have any knowledge of a place where you can find this cover online. Michael Stipe of REM and Coldplay performing Joseph Arthur's "In the Sun" Quote

Guest avid Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 And now for some country., Mickey Gilley covers buddy holley's "True love ways" beautifully. What a trajedy that Buddy died just as he was maturing as a songwriter. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted February 19, 2007 Super User Posted February 19, 2007 Neat thread, Avid. You country fans are gonna laugh at me, but I'd never heard of Allison Krause. I was at BPS yesterday. Was flipping through the dial in the parking lot when I found this amazing voice. It her, and some guy, doing a cover of John Wait's Missin You. This has got to be the purest voice I've ever heard. I'm not a fan of country music. Never have been, probably never will be, but this girl knocked me out. What a voice. And a darned good cover of a song that is very difficult to sing. I know, I butchered it myself a few times. Apparently she's been around for a while. I'm gonna go out and get a cd or two. Who knows, I may end up being a country fan after all. Cheers, GK Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 19, 2007 Super User Posted February 19, 2007 ghoti, you might want to consider Allison Krauss' CD with Union Station. Quote
Deuceu72 Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 You guys are gonna love this.............I dont think its the BEST but my favorite cover song is In-a-gad-da-da-vidda by Slayer.................... Best cover song? Hmmmmmmmmm...................... I would have to go with "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix(Written by Bob Dylan).............. ;D ;D Quote
Fisher of Men Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 I'm with you SRV fans. "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Chile" were far better by SRV than by Jimi. I just think fundamentally Stevie Ray was a better guitarist. These two tracks are cleaner and crisper than Jimi's. I still like Hendrix, but for the enjoyment of listening, I'll take Stevie Ray anyday. As far as nailing down a favorite, there's too many for me to think about. I'd probably be able to come up with a least favorite much easier. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hey Fisher of men Stevie said in an interview that he was just making Jimi's tunes his own thing BUT JIMI WROTE THEm I don't kniow if you ever saw Jimi live, I am blessed to have seen him HE WAS THE BEST , Stevie was on the same plane with him but needed a few more years to start writing in that area 8-) Quote

NOBODY even comes close to Jimi.........What he did in 3 years of recording is unbelievable!!!! Quote
razyrsharpe Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 there are a lot of good ones to choose from so here is my list SRV covering "superstition" by S. Wonder Buffett covering "uncle john's band" by Grateful Dead Hootie and the Blowfish covering "Hey Hey What Can i Do?" by Led Zep. and finally, Shinedown covering "Simple Man" by L. Skynard Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Actually like SRV's cover of Voodo Child better than the original. Quote
edbassmaster Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 There is this Korean kid on YouTube named David Choi who does acoustic covers as well as alot of original stuff. He does a cover of Brittney Spears " Hit Me Baby " that sounds nice. Check out all of his stuff, I have a feeling he is gonna be real big. He has a huge cult following...including me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoKRPCpTNss Quote
