Well, I 'm not really an avid newspaper reader, all the times it 's bad news, Anna Nicole dying, the stock market is up and I don 't have money to invest in it, stuff like that but eyeballing the newspaper today an article caught my eye.

Ok, the North Koreans detonated their first nuclear device not long ago, now it turns out that by doing so now they won the lottery ! Several governments ( US, Russia, China, South Corea and Japan ) are going to give them oil ( 100,000 tons ), food and truckload of cash ( 400 million ) in exchange for the dismanteling of any nuclear devices they have built plus dismanteling it 's nuclear facilities and allowing inspectors to inspect their nuclear facilities, besides that, the US is going to make a revision of it 's terrorist friendly country list and erase North Korea from it.

I don't understand !!! :o

so we have an option to buy the freedom from possible nuclear threats and at the same time help people in North Korea who live in terrible conditions

I can deal with that. That sounds like one of the better options when it comes to dealing with North Korea if you ask me...

obviously it's not ideal, but it's better than facing a war against a large standing army with nuclear capabilities and an unstable leader...

No not really its not much of an option, its giving in.    #1 He will use the oil for his army.   #2 The food will go to the army not the people.   #3 He will use the money to build up his army some more and be a bigger threat than he is now down the road.   The people live in terrible conditions there because he is a dictator who cares nothing about the people who live in that country.  He only cares about his military and himself all where doing is helping him accomplish what he wants.

You are exactly right about that. They have violated every agreement that they have made.  Here is a fact sheet on their duplicity.  It will likely be another give away.

It would be nice if c312 is right on this one.

I will admit that I was unaware of previous similar agreements and their violation. In light of those facts, I think we need to take a more seroius approach, but still a careful one. A war with North Korea would not be one that we would win without a lot of damages.

i agree we need to be stern an let them no we wont give in to there terroristic demands an wut not and a war should be a last resort if we cant get them to stand down

Kim Jong is terribly paranoid the world is going to attack him, hence his military build up.  He's infused a near-panic state in his country.  They live in fear of emminent attack.

A little aid, an olive branch, and on outstretched hand can go a long way to disarm his rhetoric and the fears of his followers.  You can attract more bees with honey than a heavy fist - especially when it come to Kim Jong.

If y'all are sitting there scratching your head as to why they're getting all this aid, then you best start reading up on all that "boring" political stuff that's happening around the world.  Then it will become self-evident.

And if you still believe 911 happened on that date because of our emergency 9-1-1 system, then you REALLY have some serious catching up to do!

He is a lunatic whose only concern is for himself, not his country, not his people. A man who is surrounded by fanatical loyalists and is allies with one of the worlds great poweres.

He has nuclear weapons and missle delivery capability.

What do we do when he threatens to use them?

convince him of annhiliation?  I don't think so.  His country will be destroyed, along with much of SE Asia and possiby Japan,  but he'll manage to survive.

Back down to his demands? - Out of the question.

Unless there is some alternative I'm not seeing, what choice is there other than diplomacy?

I think we as Americans are very frustrated that we can't just intimidate countries into doing our will.

We are so used to being to being the premeinent superpower we get irate when "lesser" countries don't bend to our might.  Well, they aren't.  So what do we do about it?  Destroy every upstart nation that dare defy us?  Or redefine our role so our military and economic power are seen as formidable but somewhat less intimadating.

In case you haven't noticed.  Intimidation isn't working.

It's time for fresh ideas, and new, enlightened leadership.

Wouldn't it be great if all wars could be fought out of a Bass boat on the water with rods and reels instead of guns and nucular weapons.  Cerntainly would be more peaceful.

I don't know, Ike can get pretty excited sometimes, no telling what someone like Kim Jong Il would do!
