Just got back from wally world and I remembered what others were saying about clearance items in the fishing section, so I thought I would check it out for myself.  YUP, red tags everywhere.  I got a hand full of bags of worms, creatures and some hooks.  I might go back tomorrow when the wife isn't with me and the bait monkey can take over!  LOL

It seems that Wal mart is going out of the fishing tackle business.  It's in the bassin magazine as a "rumour".

Looks like it may not be a rumour after all.

Wal-Mart store managers stock their stores to reflect the type of fishing that is done in their region.

For instance, the Wal-Mart store close to my house stocks catfish, crappie and bream items along with some saltwater and bass supplies.  That is because I live one block from the Historic James River where the catfish fishing at the Pony Pasture is outstanding along with large and smallmouth bass and bream.

The Wal-Mart store in New Orleans that I visited was loaded with salt water fishing equipment and supplies as salt water fishing in the Gulf, Lake Pontchartrain and coastal areas is a big business.

I am now wondering if the Wal-Mart executives are changing the fishing department profiles to reflect more of the local area than trying to carry items for all types of fishing?

After all, how much additional space do you need to sell jockstraps?

Word is they are getting out of it altogether, at least the FLW line.

Which is weird because they basically run the FLW tourney trail. You'd think they'd use that as a vehicle to move sales in the stores.  Was in my Walmart last weekend and no big red tag sales going on, though I noticed there are practically NO higher quality reels left behind the counter, only the cheaper stuff that's blister packed on the racks.  Normally this is the time of year they'd be stocking stuff up for the spring fishing season.

I hit the local Wal-Mart this morning around 6:30 AM and other than for one display in the center aisle no fishing products were on sale.

I did pick up a Mann's Baby 4Minus Brown Craw for $2.50; a Terminator 3/8 shad spinner bait; and a Hart white and red with a gold blade buzzbait.

I was going to modify the buzzbait this AM but it is so pretty I may leave it alone and modify another one.

The baseball stuff is now out taking up some space and the fishing stuff is down to both sides of three aisles in the sporting goods department.  All of the free Virginia Fish and Inland Game freshwater fishing regulations booklets are gone.

I agree that Wal-Mart will continue to sell anything FLW but I am concerned about the quality of the rods and reels.  They are not top of the line but they are great for people just starting to fish or wanting some gear for a weekend adventure.  These types of fishermen do not need the high end rods and reels.

Please keep us posted on the Wal-Marts in your area or that you visit while traveling around your state.  It will be interesting to see if Wal-Mart continues offering quality fishing items.

I just got back from Wally world.  Nothing out of the ordinary other than no under the counter fishing reels other than a couple they're trying to close out on.  Otherwise, the fishing section seems the same with a few items here and there with red tags on them.

Boy...maybe I should raid Wal-Mart for some DT cranks...and Mann's 1-...and some kinami flash...and maybe I'll just buy the whole freaking bait section... :D

I went to my local one in Ga and all the FLW stuff was on sale. It was pretty much just FLW stuff and some mann's crankbaits. I bought 4 FLW jigs for $1 each and 3 boxes of trailers for $1 each and Bassin for regular price $3.

I just got back and they had Trilene XT and Stren Extra Strength for $3.00 a box.  But I got there a little late and someone else wiped out most of the good colors of FLW plastics and jigs, so I took most of the 3x lizards. 8-)

The walmart here has a ton on sale flw jigs and trailers 1$ each, arkansas beavers 1$ each flw soft plastic lizards, craws, tubes, etc $1.50 each, like 60 bags 3X baits 1.50 each and a few shakespeare rods 5 bucks each. An chatterbaits $3 bucks apiece. The baitmonkey wasn't along so i kept all my money but i think he smells the red tag sale.

KS Bassin,

Wow!  What a sale!

We don't have Chatterbaits at my Wal-Mart and the plastics selection is not that great.

You did really good.

Congrats and the Bait Monkey loves you.

I was talking to the mgr. of the fishing dept in a wal mart at Okla City. He told me since Sam is gone, his daughter has moved the store more in the direction of housewares and away from sporting goods. His dept has continued to shrink in size every year for the past 3 yrs. They no longer sell guns, and the fishing section is half of what it was 2 yrs ago.

But when you go into a wal mart thats in a smaller town, they still have a decent amount of tackle. For instance if you go to lake Eufaula. The WM in Checotah has a better fishing/hunting section that the giant WM in the city.

So, if you thought WM put mom & pop out of business, heres a good opportunity to grab the customer they have turned away. Fishermen.

Open a tackle shop that offers what WM doesnt.

I haven't noticed anything different at either Wal mart here(we have two super stores).

I have heard that Wal Mart is going to stop carrying guns.

I just went to the Wal-Mart in St. Peters here and didn't see a single red tag anywhere. In fact two sporting goods employees were in the process of restocking the shelves. And I was looking forward to some good deals. Is this pertaining to ALL Wal-Marts...or just some of them? :-?

went to the local Wmart.  there was some red tag stuff but the place looked pretty normal.

I noticed they stopped stocking chatterbaits.  the last few they had were red tagged, but these were "saltwater" versions supposedly for snook and redfish.

the regular chatterbaits sold like crazy, why they switched over to the salt water style is beyond me.

What I'm hearing is that some of the more "urban" locations will be eliminating their hunting departments. The fishing portion of the sports sections aren't going anywhere unless they get bigger.

Spring stock-up is about to begin.

My local walmart is also clearing out all the flw baits and some of the stren and berkley fishing line in there store in beloit wisconsin. I think they are trying to cater more towards the the guy who only goes fishing once or twice a month. Thank god the dept manager here fishes so hopefully they don't do away with everything in the fishing dept.

I went yesterday to the nearest one to me and I guess they have cut it down by more than a 1/3. There wasn't a whole lot on sale except several kinds of FLW soft baits and a couple of diffreent jigs, none of which I really use. I've tried to tell my wife more than once, what is the use of spending money for something that is on sale even for a great price if you never use it. I think I hear the bait monkey screaming in pain somewhere in the background ;D.

I had been planning on buying a digital scale. They had 5 or 6 Rapalas on sale for almost 1/2 off and I did pick one of those up. Had to sacrifice something to the monkey... :-/

Hey Cart,

If you don't find discounts in the fishing aisle, don't stop looking. Our Wal-Mart put clearance fishing dept items in the toy aisle! Sometimes they put 'em in the clearance aisle, but I've never seen fishing stuff on clearance in the actual fishing aisle.

Also, our wal-mart quit selling better quality reels last fall. I picked up an Abu C4 and a Pinnacle Extant HS Metal for under $50 each on clearance, but that glass cabinet's been sitting bare ever since (unusual for WM).

I do enjoy Wal-Mart. Where else can you pick up a loaf of bread, a gallon of paint, and a Rapala DT-10? :)

I have visited 3 diff. WM Superstores this weekend.... bought some flw jigs and some Kinami baits all about half price, and a golden rule for 7.00,,, ,am going back, they have Shimano Spirex reels at one for 35.00  Normally 55.00.  I just needed to get some more of my hidden bait monkey cash   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

They have a lot of items on clearance, and they have not restocked any of thier plastics or rods yet...
