tipptruck1 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Well within the next few months I will be getting a harley. Heres a little about the bike. Its a 72 shovel head. It has a riged frame and springer front. The engine was a 80ci but the guy bored it 88ci. But were I need your help in is finding parts. I have googeld them and came across a few sites but didnt have what I wanted. Iam looking for 70s style ape hangers. Iam also looking for some real good foward controls. I found a few foward controls but have no clue what is good. So guys that build or tinker with the harleys I need your help. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 go to the local harley bike shop and or dirt bike shops. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Good Luck on finding parts but that site looks good. Im a sportbike guy myself here was my 17th birthday present Quote
skillet Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Make durn sure you want those hangers before parting with good money. I never liked the feeling of control (or lack there of) and my hands would go to sleep.... As Ever, Skillet Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted February 8, 2007 Super User Posted February 8, 2007 J&P cycles is probably the best place to find parts for new and old bikes. Look up swap meets in your area, you may be able to find some parts that will fit on your bike. Make sure you take as much info as possible with you about your bike. Lunchbox, That's WAYYYYY too much bike for a 17 year old. (Your profile says you are 16, BTW.) Wayne Quote
tipptruck1 Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks guys for the links. I even went to a few links that I forgot about. I will have to head up to the big harley rally up here this coming summer. No iam not going to sturgis. There a big biker rally here in wisconsin. The only reason I want ape hangers is so I have to sit stright up. I can't stand leaning over a tank. Quote
Tom Bass Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Tiptruck, Ape hangers are for idiots. I mean no offense but they are dangerous and they do not alllow you to control a bike. Try some moderate handle bars. Looks are one thing. Control is another. Believe me. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 hey speedbead I haven't turned seventeen yet and also this is my second bike my first was a gsxr[gixxer] I have been racing and riding dirtbikes since I was about five and a half. I respect bikes like this Quote
tipptruck1 Posted February 10, 2007 Author Posted February 10, 2007 Hey lunch box those bikes are nice when your young. But when you get older you will want a real bike. Iam only 21 but I have a bad back and a knee. So I can't lean over a tank for a ride. Also due to my mistake knee I can't keep my knee bent for long. Thats what I love about the Harley can stretch out and relax. But I would give you 1000 bucks if you rode that to Daytona bike week or Sturgis. The only way you would get the 1000 bucks is if you stay the whole week. My dad went to Sturgis back in the 80s and told me there was a guy that showed up in a ricer. That guy lasted 5 minnutes. He was getting made fun of by the Harley guys. That guy had to be dumb. Why the hell would you ride a ricer to a Harley rally. I have nothing agianst kids or adults with ricers. But due to me grwoing up around Harleys my whole life nothing gets my blood pumping like a heard of Harleys. I use to live along a high way on a route to Sturgis and a Harley rally in Iowa. You could hear the bikes coming and going for miles. when a bunch of them went by you couldn't even talk to a person 2 feet away from you. I want to a drit bike race with my dad becasue he know somw one there. When they would start the race it sounded like a swarm of bugs. By the way heres how a real bike sounds. http://www.hdtrader.com/display/video.asp?ID=30100 If that dosn't get your blood flowing then it never will. I can't wait intill I start my harley for the frist time. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted February 10, 2007 Super User Posted February 10, 2007 Hey lunchbox, I my line of work we call those things "Donorcycles" Quote
skillet Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 YOAH fellas!!! Harping on someones choice of ride is like harping on their choice of reels. Lots of really good reels out there with different names and different countries of origin. Opinions are like navels, everyone's got one. Some go in and some go out but they're still just navels! Have ridden different types and styles (really like older, late 50's to late 60's, Limey bikes), but that's just my opinion .... As Ever, Skillet Quote
timmyswetarded Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 though i dont know much about bikes (only have a dirtbike) im not a big harley fan, actually i really dont like them...but thats one nice street bike right there. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 OOOh No no no. Dont get me wrong tipptruck theres nothing that beats a harley but like you said its a young thing. My dad has several bikes such as a 2003 harley fatboy 100th aniversary, a 2005 victory vegas, a 2004 american ironhorse stalker, and a custom 64' panhead chopper. My dad is older and he also has a bad back and has problems in both of his knees. I will definatley get a cruiser after college and ill be out of the sportbikes. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 and My dads panhead chopper. I cant get the pic of the victory vegas to load. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Hey tipptruck you might be able to sit comfortable on a bike like my dads custom panhead cause like i said he has backproblems. And Fluke im not the guy that goes flyin by you on the highway on one wheel but i understand the risks and why you call them donorcycles. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted February 11, 2007 Author Posted February 11, 2007 Hey lunch box I really like the red one. Iam more of a old school guy. I like the bobber style were every thing is compact. I have nothing agianst stretched out bikes. It just that a smaller bike is a lot easier to get around corners. Quote
lunchbox508 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 im at my dads shop right now and i'm gunna take some pics of his bobber style choppers he has for sale. and also some of the old school ones too. Quote
