Nick B Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Dude I got a speeding ticket in the mail, it shows a picture of me stopping at a yellow light, but is says I was going 46 in a 35. $150 fine. Thats total BS. I was going to contest, but its not worth all the hassle because this "crook"ed city will probably rule against me and I would have to pay more. Im so mad, Ill be glad when this city gets what it deserves. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 9, 2007 Super User Posted February 9, 2007 So you are telling us that there are cameras focused on the roads and they snap your photo when you speed or run a red light? In Virginia the General Assembly has had bills introduced to do the same but so far they have not passed. I can understand your feelings as I would be very upset to receive a ticket in the mail, too. Nick B Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 Yes at certain intersections and they are getting more and more. Heres the messed up part the fines from the cameras are more than if you were pulled over by a real cop Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 9, 2007 Super User Posted February 9, 2007 We had red-light cameras in northern Virginia, but they quit using them a while ago. I think the state didn't want to continue their usage so they don't send tickets anymore. They left the cameras up to scare people, but I don't think they are even on. I know Wash. DC has speeding cameras than can calculate if you are speeding, take a picture, and send you a ticket. My brother has received a ticket from DC from a speeding camera and a red-light camera from my city in Virginia... Quote
justfishin Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 I sat at a red light for 15 minutes the other year and finally decided that I would move on as there was evidently something wrong with the light. About 5 or 6 other vehicles did the same. I got a fine in the mail and contested it. I told the judge what had happened and he asked me if I had proof from the city that the light was malfunctioning and when I told him no he gave me my fine along with a additional 35 dollars in court cost. What can you do? I would say pay the fine dude, I doubt you win but, I guess you could go for the principle of the thing. My two buddies, one a State Trooper and the other a Deputy Sheriff laughed like heck at me. What a bunch of goobers, lol. Quote
Fisher of Men Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 That's becoming the norm here in the DFW area. Speeding cams, red-light cams. . . all a source of easy revenue for the local govt's. A recent report in our local paper said one speeding camera in our county averaged 70 tickets a day. Even at $100 a pop, that adds up to over 2 million dollars for that small town annually. The mayor was quoted as saying this would help keep his city streets safe for his residents. :-? The major highway they set it up on runs around the "city" area. The least he could do was tell the truth. Quote
Tom Bass Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 They tried these cameras in California. They failed. The key is that to be cited one must be cited by a sworn officer of the law. Getting a mailer of your offense is not "being cited". Check the laws in your area. Also, ask the courts for the calibration records of the electronics. Most of them aren't calibrated and if they are ask them if the calibration was done intact or in a lab. If they were done in a lab there is a chance that they were made "uncalibrated" in transit and during installation. Be advised that showing up at a court appearance and espousing these excuses will get you no where. You'll need an attorney. AND, if you have to tell your attorney this, you picked the wrong attorney! Quote
bassnleo Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Being in law enforcement I must admit, I do not like the camera citations. I'm not aware of them being used anywhere around here. My major beef would be how in the heck do you know whom is actually operating the vehicle at the time of the alleged violation? Here in PA we have to identify the violator in court (if they choose to plead not guilty and request a hearing before a judge.). When a camera snaps a pic of your plate, I assume they send the citation to the registered owner. What if you lent your car to a friend or someone is driving it that is not the registered owner? From what I have read the cameras are not intended to be a source of revenue (although one could certainly argue thats what they have turned into) they were intended to fill gaps in manpower and be a deterrent to motorists whom choose to violate the laws. I feel your pain and you do have a vaild point.... Quote
frogtog Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 We have them in Rocky Mount NC. I have recived 2 tickets in the mail for running a yellow light both times. I protested because the picture showed the lights were yellow. They told me I would have to put up $50.00 to have an appeal. They sent me another letter and told me they found me guilty and I had to send them another $100.00. Well i did some checking and found out that NASA with your tax dollards came up with this BS and sells to companys and the companys talk the citys into putting them up and gives the city about 35%. Well being as crazy as I am I took a picture of a hundred dollard bill and mailed it to them. They have been threating me for a year now. Ain't going to pay! They can ajust the camras any way they want. Still ain't going to pay. ;D ;D ;D Quote
Nick B Posted February 10, 2007 Author Posted February 10, 2007 I paid the fine, but I think I got popped again. I saw the flash go off as I passed the camera, but I wasnt the only car in the intersection, so hopefully it was for another car Quote

cabela10 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 We had those camara's here in Minnesota and so many people protested them, that we no longer use them anymore. The complaint was, that they would take pictures and send tickets to people that were clearly stopped. And the camara couldn't identify the actual driver of the vehicle. Those camaras are a joke. Pretty soon we will have camara's on the inside of the toilets to make sure we don't accidently pee on the ring or floor, and if a drop hits the floor, about 10 different camara angles will catch that drop falling to the floor in slow motion, thats when we are all screwed.
