justfishin Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 My son just got home Monday and is finished his military time. He has been in Iraq for a year and a half. He was deployed along the Syrian border, spent time in Mosul, and spent the last eight months in Baghdad. He is a little scared visibly from being stabbed and injured in a Humvee while driving over a roadside bomb but, is all in one piece. He is understandably not the same " boy " that left for the military, he is a man now and my heart is swelled with pride. He gave me the word that he never wants me to bring up the middle east with him so, I will respect that. He plans on going to college for a teaching degree. His dream is to be a college football coach. My dream for him is to achieve that goal. I pray for all whose sons and daughters are deployed in Iraq or anywhere else in the world serving in the military. God Bless. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 8, 2007 Super User Posted February 8, 2007 All of us are proud of your son. Please tell him that after I got back from Viet Nam, I have never discussed my tour nor do I watch war movies anymore. And I returned home in 1970 so it has been almost 37 years since I have been back in the states. God Bless him and may he have a long and prosprous life. Quote

Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted February 8, 2007 Super User Posted February 8, 2007 That is FANASTIC news!!!!! We are all proud of him Quote
Guest avid Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 You have every right to be proud. Respecting his wishes not to discuss the mideast is wise, and considerate. I hope I'm not out of line here, but I can't help but wonder if some Post Truamatic stress is not affecting him. He will never be the same "boy" who left home to fight in Iraq. But if I may be so bold as to suggest that you do a little research into PTSD. He may or may not be affected, but it can't hurt for you to be familiar with the symptoms. God bless you both and all the families and combat veterans past and presant. Quote
justfishin Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks for your concern Avid. I not only recognize his PTS but, I saw it rear up when he was stabbed last year. To make a long story short, he was jumped in a alley way and stabbed, could not fire because of the other men, and took the guy out with his knife. Evidently they had to pull my son off of the guy. His excellent training kicked in. A nurse called during that week and let me talk to him as long as he wanted. He just did not even speak of what happened. I only knew what the nurse told me, nor did he ever bring it up. Enough said. I will never bring anything to do with Iraq up with him. If he ever wants to discuss it, I will let him do all the talking. I really don't think we will ever have that discussion though. I guess some day it might manifest itself, how? I don't know. Maybe it will never happen. It breaks my heart that this will probably stick with him for his life time but, my lips are sealed. Again, thanks for your concern. I appreciate it and have looked into it. Quote
mjhutch1116 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Very glad to hear your son is home. Tell him that we are all very proud of him for his service to our country and that everyone that serves in the armed forces deserves nothing but our respect and prayers so that they may all come home safe. Captain Underpants Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Thanks and hats off to your son. I know some guys who recently made it back from Iraq, and from what they tell me of the normal day of a U.S. soldier, your son is a hero. Not to mention his bravery in actually going there. I'm just a kid still, but I've always wanted to serve in the army. Your son adds oil to that flame. Tell him that I said thank you, and welcome back to the U.S.A.! Quote
