Well, today at school my friend accidentally locked his car keys to his Mercedes Kompressor inside the trunk. Everyone thought it was hilarious, lol. I called AAA because he didn't have his card with him and when the guy came out he wouldn't open the car. The problem was that since the Mercedes has such a great anti-theft system (too great), if he unlocked the car the alarm would go off and everything shuts down and can't be opened. But get this: The seats in his car don't fold down, so if the guy unlocked the car he wouldn't be able to get inside the trunk. Also, the spare key was locked inside the glove compartment (the whole point of having a spare key is that it's outside of the car), and since the alarm would have gone off had he opened it, the glove compartment would shut down and there would be no way of getting it open. The end result is that my friend had to get his car towed to the Mercedes dealership to unlock the car and get his keys. Just thought I'd share.

Anyone else ever locked their keys in their car before?

A lot of folks don't know this but if you don't have that AA and other roadside assistance stuff, look on your windshield towards the bottom right hand, a little beneath the wiper blades, there will be a serial number.  About 16-18 digits. Little hard to see.  Get that number and either get a friend or cab and go to the dealership and make a key.  A lot cheaper than 50-60 bucks to call the locksmith.

Happened to me about two weeks ago and it costs me 5.34 for a key.

I'm gonna guess that a Mercedes key is gonna cost a small fortune. I bet it has a chip in it and is laser cut.

I locked my keys in my car once.  After that, I carry a spare key in my wallet.  I have used the spare several times and would've been stuck without it.

Practically everyone has locked themselves out of their car one time or another.

It's a real pain in the butt.

Except when it's a mercedes.

than it's funny as helll -  Gotta love it.

I lock my self out of my car many times a year. The idiots at mazda thought it would be nice to put the lock button in front of the door handle. The handle is so small I can only get like two fingers on it. So every time I open the door I bump the door lock. Do to this I can now break in my car in lass then a 30 seconds.

First off Im loving my car A puke green 1993 Duster. Complete with torn out headr and a broken tail light, My friends call it the chick magnet. I parked it overnight in BROOKLYN with the KEYS IN IT and NOBODY STOLE IT,,, now thats security.

I do not care how good the security system is if its a pro that car is gone::::::::::::::: A good lock keeps a good kid from becoming a crook, it will not stop a pro who wants your car.

Live_2_Fish, you are right. The keys for a Mercedes have to be laser cut.

That's the VIN# - Vehicle Identification Number

My wife and I used to lock ourselves out all the time.  Then, a wise old man showed me a "trick."  We haven't locked ourselves out since!  I leave on key in the ignition at all times.  The other stays on my keychain, in my pocket, only to come out when I unlock the door, then goes right back in my pocket.  Simple, cheap, and it works.

Depending on the year of the car the dealer has the key codes for each vin number. Some cars even have the key codes etched into the glass.

My dad and I have done this several times. One in particular is my dads 02 Ford F150, this truck was a salvaged vehicle he bought from a salvage auction that we repaired. The keys were gone and all we did was take the vin up to the dealer and they cut a key for us right there. This key had a chip inside it and cost him $150.

Leaving a key in your ingnition at all times just seems like an invatation for auto theft.

FloridaBassKing: Tell your buddy to get a Jaguar next time. My wife's favorite thing about hers is that its impossible to lock the keys in it. There is a chip in the key and the car recognizes when its still in the car (provided many hours of entertainment for me when I first bought it for her).

Taking the VIN to the dealership is a huge deal. Shows like 20/20 and Dateline have taken random VIN's from a  parking alot, went to the dealership, and got keys (obviously the shows were about auto theft). I cover mine up for that reason (just slide a business card down over it on the dash).

AW THAT MESSED THAT UP HALE!!!! I was gonna take REDLINERROBERTS Lambo for a ride if he came to the FORK NOW IHAVE TO ASK HIM FOR PERMISSION

Man, I must be doing something wrong.

People on here are driving Lambos, Jags and stuff like that and I

am stuck with a Dodge Durango and a Crew Cab Silverado Z71. It

just isn't fair. lol

I almost bought a BMW a few years ago. I drove by the dealership

every day and that little black beamer was just sitting there. One day

I told my wife that I was going to go buy it. She said, OK. She waited

a second and said "but I just don't know how you are going to tow your

boat with a BMW." At that time we only had a truck and her car and she

wasn't about to get rid of her car and drive my pickup.

About 5 years ago I had to drop something off at work and I left the car running while I went inside. When I came out I realized that I had locked the door when I got out. Called my wife and it took her about 1/2 hour to get there with the second set of keys and the whole time the car is running. Now I make sure that the key is in my pocket before I get out of the car.
