Guest avid Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Those of you who have been around awhile know that in October I had surgery on my shoulder for bursitis, tendenosis, and a cyst. I was making slow but steady progress, and with some modifications was able to resume fishing. There was however a deep pain, that was very persistant. I completed my P/T and the surgeon said it was "radiant pain" but I knew there was more to it. Well to make a long story short I went to my family doctor who ordered anothered MRI. Seems like I have a torn rotator cuff muscle that will require another surgery. It is in the place that I identified as the most painful spot from day one after the surgery. My wife thinks the surgeon nicked the muscle when removing the cyst. Who knows? I just can't believe I have to go through this again. I just got the call this morning, and so am still in shock. The only thing I know for sure is that I'm going to Lake Fork. I don't care if I have to fish with a cane pole for crappie. God willing, I'm not missing out on this trip. Reminds me of the John Lennon saying "Life is what happens when your making other plans" peace. avid Quote
noxpertjim Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Sorry to hear about that. I would like to ask where the cyst was, because I have one on the humeral head on my right arm. I can't throw a ball or many other related activities for fear of complete dislocation, which I've experienced one too many times. I was wondering if your experience would be similar to mine if I were to choose surgery. I've put it off for years because of costs. My insurance plan isn't going to make the majority of the expense disappear... Quote
Guest avid Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I don't like surgery. I believe that it is a last resort. I would try everything else before considering it. But ultimately only you can make that decision. good luck avid Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted January 19, 2007 Super User Posted January 19, 2007 avid I am really sorry to read this post, esp. after reading the posts from yesterdasy in the fishing trip section. I know how discouraging it is to be unable to do the things you want to do. I won't give cliched advise other than be careful. There are many of us who will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Good luck. K Quote
nboucher Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Avid, that's a tough break indeed. Just over the weekend I was thinking of dropping you a PM to see how the PT was going. I'm sure you'll consider this a setback and not a defeat. And as your official Fork roomie, I'll help down there however I can. Quote
Guest avid Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 thanks Norman, kU. and all well wishers. Yes, it is a setback not a defeat. I just got the call about the MRI results this morning and that surgery is the only option. What I don't know if I will do damage by postponing till after the fork. It would be pretty ideal for me to have it done in June. Then my recovery would be in the summer. For most of y'all that may sound strange, but living in SE Florida it makes perfect sense. But, If the docs say I can't wait without risk, then I go when they say to. Except of course if they want to schedule me just prior to or during lake fork week. It's still mid January. If it can wait that long a few extra weeks won't make a difference. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 19, 2007 Super User Posted January 19, 2007 Man, that sucks! I hope you can at least postpone the surgery. I look forward to meeting you soon. -Kent Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted January 19, 2007 Super User Posted January 19, 2007 Life throws another curve ball ! Sorry to hear this . Being the tough old buzzard you are , you'll kick this things ***. Hang in there Avid. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Still don't want me to carry your stuff? ;D Shoot, I'll cast for you if you want buddy, point and give me a yardage, we'll be fine tuned in an hour! How can I not support such a diehard attitude? You have the drive and mindset of someone 1/2 your age you crazy S.O. Basser! Although this is bad news, I know you'll do fine. The issue with the surgeon is somthing to look into. With all the work you've had done, there are plenty of pictures that will show you the "before" and "after". I've torn both my cuffs skiing, but alot of PT and I avoided the knife. Thats why I was so persistent about telling you to stick tough to the exercises they give you and also about the one where you hold the towel above your head and behind your back and grab bottom with other hand. That one was the one I felt was the best. But I remember how clearly the tears were when they showed me the films. Both were different but clearly there. I'm no doctor but there's a good chance you would have been able to see if it was there before or not. Good luck with getting some proper diagnosis and putting this monster to bed! Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted January 19, 2007 Super User Posted January 19, 2007 Well that sucks BIG TIME!!!! Very sorry to hear that. The "art" of shoulder surgery must not be an exact science. I seem to hear of more people having issues (multiple surgeries) with their shoulders including my grandfather and my best friend's uncle. Quote
Valascus Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Boy avid...that's rough. I really feel for you. You have worked so hard to return to what you are passionate about and haven't let anything slow you down. This will be the same way. You'll get through this! Your determination and effort is inspiring to everyone on this site. Who knows...maybe a second opinion says something different and maybe you avoid the knife like LBH said. Keep the faith avid. You are in all of our thoughts and prayers. Quote
RiskKid. Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Hey Avid....that really stinks. I went thru an illness about 7 years ago with multiple surgeries so I know how discouraging it is. Keep up the positive vibes....easier said than done. Looking forward to meeting you at the Fork! Am sending some positive vibes your way. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Hey Avid I am sorry to hear that. You come to the Fork I dont care if I have to carry you and the boat I hop[e you are not in too much pain presently and that you can hold off the surgery til after the Fork Trip Ill PM you over the weekend Ron is in Fla. I am sure he will call you Lata Quote
justfishin Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I feel for ya Avid. Insurance won't pay for a new knee for me so I am up for my third knee surgery soon. They took 18" of muscle out of the back of my leg to create a ACL, repaired the Medial and Lateral Meniscus and are going back in for more grinding of my Patella. I understand your pain. It sucks. Hang in there. Ask for Ultracet to get you through the Lake Fork trip. Your orthopedic surgeon will be familiar with this RX as it is for individuals with severe Arthritis. www.drugs.com/ultracet.html Quote
BASS fisherman Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Sorry to hear that Avid. Life always seems to throw in those curve balls when you least expect them. Keep us posted on the progress, and I hope you a speedy recovery this time around as well. Quote

VekolBass Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 That's a really unfortunate. Best wishes for a quick and full recovery. The bass in Florida, however, are doubtless relieved. Hopefully, it will be a very short reprieve. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 21, 2007 Super User Posted January 21, 2007 A setback for sure, but you'll come out a winner from it. I have complete faith. Quote
