Super User Matt Fly Posted December 7, 2006 Super User Posted December 7, 2006 Here it is in a nutshell, somehow, and I wasn't even looking for one, I ended up with two of the new 60GB PS3's. I placed one on Ebay for 10 day sale with starting bid of $2250.00. Ending the 15th. My Email is flooded with offers for $5000.oo US dollars. It appears there is a huge market overseas as they are not getting any or vary many. Is it legal to pull an item of Ebay that is listed for 10 day sale? Since they would not be bidding on directly, I would have to give Pay Pal account to this individual (s), is this a standard practice? What kind of steps to ensure I'm not being scammed by someone do I need to take if I was to sell this off line? Why wouldn't they take one that is listed for buy now for 1500.00 instead of offering more money than I asked? They do have a buyer rating that is good, but the last time this individual bought anything off Ebay was 4 years ago. Any advice from those who have actively sold or bought would be nice. Thanks Matt Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted December 7, 2006 Super User Posted December 7, 2006 Definitely sounds sketchy. There are quite a few (just did a quick peek) PS3's on Ebay with a "Buy it Now" option SIGNIFIGANTLY less than what they are offering you. I don't know what they could be pulling, but BEWARE Quote
edbassmaster Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 YO man...stay away from that...it is FRAUD!! Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 If you dont have any bids on it I dont think its against policy to remove it. Better check the rules though Since they would not be bidding on directly, I would have to give Pay Pal account to this individual (s), is this a standard practice? This is where it sounds like a scam. You could send them an invoice and once its paid for through paypal and you have confirmation for it from paypal payment then send them a ps3. Never send out any password or other important information. To me it does sound like a scam. Go into your paypal account and click request money. Then fill it out and you can request payment from whom ever. This will send them an invoce. They no pay its a scam. If you go to send money you can send all the money you want to Fish4life22@hotmail.com. LOL My true feeling on this is its a scam and your better off leaving it on ebay and losing the maybe cash and taking what they bid on ebay. Just my gut feeling. COST OF THIS POST AND EXPERTISE 1 PS3. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 7, 2006 Author Super User Posted December 7, 2006 education in progress on Ebay, please keep them coming. and Thanks Matt. Quote
edbassmaster Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 By the way I just sold a 20g for $825 and shipped it ups overnight and the jerk is saying he didnt receive it...sounds like he refused to sign for it. Paypal put a hold on my money and it is under investigation. I am furious!! By the way I am done Ebay after 8 years...I am tired of dealing with people constantly trying to scam. Im done!! Quote
sodaksker Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 matt, It is a scam. Do you have a buy it now option on your listing? I think you can choose to end the auction at any time, or you can go in and change the listing time or add a buy it now option. Also you should be able to cancel your listing, you just have to pay some fee to ebay to do it. All the ebay faqs should cover this. Now for selling off line, you have to beware of the people wanting to buy for more than your asking price. This is a common scam where they offer you $5k for something you are asking $3k for but, they want you to send them $2K back as a refund. They send you a fake money order, cashiers check, etc,.. and you send them the product and the refund. Meanwhile 4 weeks later your bank informs you that the check was a phony, now you are out the product and the $2k. If you don't know the buyers personally then I would make them pay via paypal. That is the most secure method I know of, although I am sure there are people out there making scams through it as well. With pay pal you should be able to send the buyer an invoice. You don't have to give them your paypal account info, you invoice theirs. Once they make the payment through pay pal you should be good to go. Quote

You did ship it by Fedex, UPS, Priority mail or something like that didn 't you ? If you didn 't ship it by a mean that requires signing of recipt you are screwed, if you did then track the number, there it will appear when it was delivered, the hour it was delivered and most important, who signed when the package was delivered. Print that information and send it to e-bay. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted December 8, 2006 Super User Posted December 8, 2006 First off, those offers you're getting are scams. I get them occasionally from overseas. My wife got a phone call the other day at her business from someone from Nigeria wanting to purchase 4 diamond/Gold pendants at nearly $800 apiece. The Visa card he gave didn't match up with the name. How this guy from Nigeria got my wifes business phone number is beyond me. This time of the year is ripe for the scammers. 2nd, since you advertised you item on Ebay for sale anyone that sees it did so because of Ebay. Ebay's policy is they deserve a sellers fee if you make a sale based on the items appearance on Ebay. You also lose any sellers protection in the event the sale goes bad if you sell outside the system. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted December 8, 2006 Super User Posted December 8, 2006 It most likely is a scam in my opinion but you should call his bluff. If he wants to give you 5 grand for it,make him send the money via Int'l money order, cash it,then ship the PS3 to him.Do not ship anything until you have free and clear, green cash money in your hands. You can cancel your auction no problem.....just have to cancel all bids first. Quote
nboucher Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 If it is a scam, you should let e-Bay know. They try to police the stuff as best they can, but with all the volume, it's impossible. Quote

Do you have a tracking # Did you send it delivery confirmation Is it insured If you have any of this you can prove either he is a lying sack of poo, or its the shippers problem. If you offered insurance and he didnt take it I would think its his problem. As long as you prove you shipped it. If the package is insured the battle is not yours its the shiping company and him. You not out anything. I believe you just file a claim with the shipper. When I sell anything I always charge insurance, and if its expensive I get the $1 delivery confirmation option with usps. $1 loss I will eat before 500 big ones. Although I just add it to Shipping and handling. Matt, like said above call his bluff and get the $ in your hand. after the bank clears the cashiers check or what ever payment its all yours. Ship out the ps3. I deal alot with shipping product. Here are some always I would highly recommend save you in the long run especially on high $ items. 1. Tracking # is a must 2. delivery confirmation 3. insurance That goes for anything you sell or even if you buy it, or the real bad, have to send back a product to a manufacturer for service. These options dont cost but a few bucks and save alot in the long run when something goes bad. Just a recommendation Quote
