Guest the_muddy_man Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Hey fellas I was loving that site , especially all those old jazz vids. Well I got a virus taht went right around my McAfee Protection and I had to reinstall windows.Time consuming for a novice to say the least. It came in on a Bob Dylan Virus Our computer guy at work says its a dangerous sites for events such as this So im staying off it Quote
Super User Dan: Posted December 6, 2006 Super User Posted December 6, 2006 are you sure it came off of youtube? I wouldn't think a site owned by Google would have viruses in it... Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Absolutely> Google is my engine of choice There is 2 things going on at You Tube, music wise. They are getting vids from a lot of people and its growing very very fast. There is talk in the music industry that Google may be circumventing copyright laws, because techinacally they are sharing meber vids, many of which are bootlegs and Pirated. He came to my house. What happened was I was going through Bob Dylan Vids then my computer started going slow and the memory was going from 72% free to 11% He said a worm had gotten in on the last Dyalln Video I had to clear my computer and reinstall now its fine The other thing , I hate these recurring conspiracy theroires, but it was put out to me. The record execcs put these things up to make people wary of using the services until they get their end I dont buy that for a minute but one of the nuts at work said that ;D Quote
Super User Dan: Posted December 6, 2006 Super User Posted December 6, 2006 I didn't know you could imbed viruses into videos on youtube like that....but I guess it would be possible. Anyway, as for your conspiracy theory, i wouldn't be surprised at all if that is the case. I know that the record labels used to put corrupted versions of songs on file sharing networks like Limewire and iMesh. People would download these files, listen to 30 seconds of the song, then it would start playing loud, high pitched noises for the rest of the track. Now, that could have been the work of pranksters, but I and many others believe the record companies put them up there to deter people from downloading. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted December 6, 2006 Super User Posted December 6, 2006 That sucks. I realy like that site as well. I bet in the last couple months I have spent on average a half hour on that site a day. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 The video I was watching when it happened was a version of THE CHIMES OF FREEDOM I dont have enoguh knowledge or experience to explain this or what to believe. All I can tell you is it happened It happend when it was loading My screen froze, I restarted my computer and I was off to the races! > :-[ :'( Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Hey Norm my very computer savy daughter has been telling me that for a year now. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted December 6, 2006 Super User Posted December 6, 2006 Any site that receives numerous files from outside users is a potential virus distributor. No matter how big the company, virus protection is always playing catch up with new viruses and worms that are created. nboucher stated: Get a Mac. Macs are susceptible to viruses also. There just aren't as many created for them because they aren't as ubiquitous as the PC. Linux is the least susceptible, but eventually viruses are created for all operating systems. Quote
nboucher Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 We're a Mac family, but I gotta say, those commercials they're running are almost enough to make me turn back to Windows. I'd like to smack that kid. Quote

nboucher Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 macs are for graphic designers and nancy boys. One of my family members is one of those things; you'll just have to figure out which one. Quote
YankeesWin Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 OK! I'll guess a "Graphic Boy, Nancy Designer" Is that right??? Quote

justfishin Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Hey guys, I use e-Trust Antivirus,Adware,Spybot,Spysweeper and never had a problem---yet--- but, let me tell you, I use Windows and why do you think you have to stay in Auto Update mode with all of the patches and such. I think Mac has less problems but, as long as the net is growing like it is, security is going to suffer, no matter what you are downloading or burning off the net. Crashes happen. Trojans,Worms and such come up a hundred times a day. Its not if, its when nowadays. Also, if you are going to download Internet Exploror 7, before you do I would check into Mozilla Firefox instead as your browser. I had 7 and dumped it for Firefox. It also claims to have a better handle on security than IE 7 I really like it. I really like the tabs a lot. Give her a whirl. Go to www.cnet.com and read the survey and comparison. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted December 7, 2006 Super User Posted December 7, 2006 Jim, I don't think you need all those anti-spyware programs. Spysweeper is ranked above all of those other spyware/adware scanners so you should be fine just running Spysweeper, it'll probably find the stuff that the others won't. Also, from what I've read, etrust is a terrible virus scanner. I would try something like PC-cillin or Kaspersky Anti-Virus or even Norton or McAfee. I use Kaspersky and Spysweeper which are regarded as some of the best programs for their categories. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Hey I have the full McAfee Security sweet. Would you guys also reccomend a spyware blocker also on top of that? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted December 7, 2006 Super User Posted December 7, 2006 yeah, I would also get a good antispyware/adware program. I use Webroot's Spysweeper and it works very well. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Thank you I have a lot to learn I am relatively new and a novice with computers.I appreciate the info. Quote
justfishin Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Thanks c312. I hear ya. I have those extras like spybot and adware for the heck of it. You are right, spysweeper seems to be the best, at least for me. As far as AV programs go. Hey, I am on a pc 12-16 hrs. a day in a hospital emergency room and when I get home I get a little lax on my home security. I am the typical home user, get the cheapest or the deal from your ISP. I got the special from my ISP. First of all---back up, back up, back up---is the final word as you know. I had McAfee two years ago and during a terrible worm and trojan attack one week I crashed. I dumped Mc for Kaspersky and had it for a year and it was not as user friendly and at the time and was lax in the file sharing area. They all have their pros and cons. eTrust is rated about no.9 but, is easy for me, cheap and for a year and a half it has been fantastic. I am sure when the license runs out I will change to Bitdefender though. I think that this is currently the best, it seems to have it all. Like I said, nowadays, backup, backup, backup, lol. Here is a good site that the hospital IT's turned me on to www.SCmagazine.com ----Thanks for your reply, and I hope your fishing rods stay bent !!!! Quote
Super User Dan: Posted December 8, 2006 Super User Posted December 8, 2006 Whatever works for you man, but if you are thinking about changing to bitdefender, I've read good things about it. My friend has it and it seems pretty simple to use and I think it actually comes with a firewall. It's very highly rated. It sounds like you are doing your homework like I have, and that's the most important thing. Quote
