dink Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I was one of the lucky half of a million to lose power in the MO/IL area over the last few days. The power came back on for me about an hour ago. Heat never felt so good! Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted December 4, 2006 Super User Posted December 4, 2006 Dink Glad you finally have power. This was the worst ice storm I've ever seen. I was one of the lucky ones in my area not to lose power. Every tree in my yard suffered at least some damage-the bigger ones major damage. My TV antenna was destroyed, but I don't think any roof damage was done. I won't know for sure until the ice melts. :-/ The pole shed in the lot next to mine was pancaked. Did you have any damage done to your place? Good to have you back. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 4, 2006 Super User Posted December 4, 2006 Having lived through Audrey and Rita I feel ya Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 5, 2006 Super User Posted December 5, 2006 Having lived through Audrey and Rita I feel ya Yeah but you don 't die from freezing, A/C shure is good thing so unless you are out there getting a sun bath like a lizard nothing is going to happen to you. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 5, 2006 Super User Posted December 5, 2006 Not belittling what happened to dink but Rita has been overshadowed by Katrina Rita damage Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 5, 2006 Super User Posted December 5, 2006 New Orleans had buildings still standing, this is Cameron, Louisiana 27 miles from my house in Lake Charles. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted December 5, 2006 Super User Posted December 5, 2006 Catt We had a lot of damage and some folks are still without power, but compared to Katrina it was just a scratch. I was very lucky, and I am not speaking for Dink, but if you compare my pictures to yours I think they speak for themselves: Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 5, 2006 Super User Posted December 5, 2006 All natural disaster is serious; I spent 3 weeks helping Katrina victims when on week 4 Rita hit us. Until you have personally been affected it's hard to understand, it's more mental than physical. I would rather a hurricane than blizzard; I hate ice unless it's in my tea. Everyone on the web site is in my prayers daily Quote
Fishing Doug Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 dink, glad to hear you have your heat back...I was lucky enough to not lose power at my place, but our office did for a while...barely set us back though. Doug Quote
Valascus Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 I was also one of the half mil without power. Mine came on last night at 6:30, but we couldn't come home yet because the wife was at work til 9:00 and my daughter was asleep. Besides, we had to let the house warm back up to normal before we could bring the little one back here. It ended up inadvertantly killing my fish and we lost all our frozen and refrigerated food. I tried to save the fish by moving him out of his 30 gallon tank here and into an extra 10 gallon I had lying around where we were staying. He apparently didn't like the 10 and repeatly tried to jump out and damaged himself banging against the top of the tank. Oh well...at least I tried. It was try to move him and he MAY die...or leave him be and he WILL die. It just sucks because that fish has survived an 8 day power outage last summer and 4 moves, and just when I thought I had him saved from this one he dies. But I guess that if this was the worst thing that happened that is alright I suppose. None of our pipes burst...no damage to our trees or house of any kind...no one in my family that lives around here was hurt by the storm...so I guess all is well. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted December 5, 2006 Super User Posted December 5, 2006 Valascus Sounds like a tough few days for you and your family. Glad that it wasn't any worse and that you're back in your home. Sorry about the fish. Come on spring! K BTW I heard on the news at noon there were still over 150,000 customers without power in the Metro area. Quote
dink Posted December 6, 2006 Author Posted December 6, 2006 Good to hear everyone's lights are coming back on. I know what Valascus is talking about. One week ago I bought my wife two tropical freshwater fish. After the power outage, the tank temp dropped to 53 degrees. They sure were moving slow but pulled through just fine. Catt, I feel for you guys down there. I lived on Ft. Polk 20+ years ago. Hurricanes Danny and Jane in '85. They were weak compared to Katrina and Rita yet, were plenty scary for a 12 year-old. Strangely enough, that is about the time my fascination with all weather started :-?. Still 90,000+ without power around here... keep 'em in mind . P.S. Nothing hit my house and my big old tree lost one branch about four feet long. I'm still trying to figure that one out. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 6, 2006 Super User Posted December 6, 2006 Dink, what's the deal with hurricanes I have a fascination with weather & I was 6 when Hurricane Audrey hit in 1957. Quote
dink Posted December 7, 2006 Author Posted December 7, 2006 You got me, Catt. :-? Nowadays, I'm one of those morons who goes OUTSIDE when the tornado sirens go off ;D ;D. Green skies are so cool. 8-) Quote
Valascus Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 I must admit, I am one of those people too. I usually go outside to check things out, but usually leave the door open so if things get hairy I can make a hasty retreat. Quote
