That is a great suggestion Shad Master, but I understand why Glenn doesnt make the program changes.

To every problem there is a solution.  The way I see it Glenn already has this feature, not exactly like you are stating but with a little modifing we can adapt and conquer this dilima.

If we make a post and sticky(possible) it called  November outings for example.

Then take the  fishing reports/log and each one of us that add to it just post it up in the topic and we can follow along.  Its not exactly what your looking for but it might work.  I would be interested in perticipating in this because we all can use each others info for similiar conditions.  Just might work!

Shad_Master, I agree with you that a response to your question from someone "in charge" would have been appropriate.

Apologies for not responding to this sooner.  As LBH said, everything is considered, regardless of response.  This is not a dictatorship, so I am always open to ideas and suggestions.

Regarding your idea about the logs.  This would require MySQL or SQL database programming, with a PHP front end, compatible with multiple browser/OS versions.  In essence, it's a custom application that must pass rigorous testing, and be secure.  In addition, it must be scalable to accomodate multiple lakes, rivers, impoundments, etc. in an infinite variety of locations across the globe; and be able to scale to any number of users, without any performance issues on the site.  Note that there are a lot of lakes named the same thing, so this will need to be accounted for as well.

Also note, custom scripts are very expensive and time-consuming to implement and maintain.  New features will need to be added over time, and security patches created/installed.

Considering I'm not a database expert, this makes it even more complicated.

I'm not saying it isn't a great idea.  But, given the hurdles listed above, it's not feasible at this time.

If there are any professional web developers out there with an expertise in MySQL databases that would like to volunteer their time for this project, then perhaps we can talk about the possibilities.  But again, this would involve a very long-term committment to support the application throughout its lifecycle as upgrades and enhancements are made.

Regards,

Glenn

Without getting into my background and all that, but this is somewhat along the lines of what I do for a living and Glenn is right about the intesity in getting the database established. It would be overwhelming. One single person could not do this in a feasible amount of time. The greatest expense will not come from the initial setup but the maintenance and future upgrades that would be required. The owners of this site shouldnt expect to pay less than 8-12k over a 5 year period to get what everyone would want. And even then, a handful of people would whine about it.

Quite honestly, a stand alone program could be written in less time, less expense, and run 1000 times better. So in that case, the programmer stands to make a lot more money for his time and investment.

BTW, thanks for your response Flechero, but I was not ever trying to "attack" anyone and certainly hope no one thinks that I ever would.

Shad,

I know you wouldn't, the quote was actually taken from Fluke's post, not yours.  I only used it to show that an original response from a Mod would have been better.  No explanations needed.  It's all good.

Glenn,

We all know you go "above and beyond" on a regular basis, we just want you to know if it ever does come down to money, we can help.  And most of us would do so gladly!

Keep up the great work!

Great explanation, Glenn.  When I agreed that an explanation was appropriate, I was thinking more along the lines of "From a business perspective, this is not feasible at this time."  ;)  I don't think you should have to explain the technical details to everyone on the site, but thanks anyway.

Just a quick side note. Firefox 2 (web browser) has a built in spell check that works just like a microsoft office spell check.
