Tom Bass Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 Folks, I finally got around to doing the final set up and restore of my PC yesterday. Some jasper gave my computer a hacking cough and it ate the hard drive. After much fussing and fighting I finally got everything up and running, got all my retrieved data put back on to the computer and then I made a bonehead move: I downloaded Windows Internet Explorer 7 provided by Yahoo. At first it seemed okay and the format was a little hard to get used to and the little insect like icons that flash and change color weren't as bad as was I fussing about until I started clicking links in websites. Everything came to a grinding halt. All of a sudden I was transported back to the State of the Art 56K modem days and beyond. I thought something was wrong with my computer or that maybe some software was inhibiting my access so I spent about another hour reconfiguring and getting rid of suspected links and programs. Still slow as molasses. I made some calls only to find that many people are having the same complaint and it wasn't just the Yahoo version. I tried deleting Internet Explorer 7. After seveal attempts it was still hanging on. Thank goodness for System Restore. I ended up having to go back through the System Restore process to get rid of this so-called Up Grade.... Now, everything seems to be working okay. I won't make that mistake again without doing a little research first. I sure hope they work the bugs out of 7 before people are forced to download it due to internet compatibility. Quote

Jall65 Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 Mozilla Firefox is better and safer than IE hands down. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted November 11, 2006 Super User Posted November 11, 2006 Yeah, generally it's a good idea to wait before you install any major upgrades like Explorer, new service packs, etc... just to let other people find the mistakes before you do... Quote
paparock Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 I downloaded Internet Explorer 7 from Microsoft Update Downloads a week ago and have experienced zero problems since. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted November 11, 2006 Super User Posted November 11, 2006 Another vote for firefox. Mine is very customized and perfect for me. You can tailor it to do exactly what you want. Even at my terrible 56K rate, it was still worth the download. Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 11, 2006 Author Posted November 11, 2006 Perhaps my mistake was doing it through Yahoo. I have had some e-mails that say the same thing that you are saying Paparock. Thanks. Quote
Lightninrod Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 I downloaded Internet Explorer 7 from Microsoft Update Downloads a week ago and have experienced zero problems since. What he said except for some quirks that I don't appreciate but no "problems". Dan Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 After doing a lttle research and from some posts here and on other boards, as well as some e-mails I think that the key is to download IE7 from Microsoft and not through Yahoo or any other ISP. So far everyone that says that they have gone directly through Microsoft reports no problems. But, I'll stay with what works for me for now. Thanks for your input and your tolerence. 8-) Quote

I just hope Murphy's Law doesn't come attack me after I've posted this... Quote
Guest avid Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 OK, I give up. How do I check which version I have installed? Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Avid, If you installed it from an ISP like Yahoo or MSN they may have installed some of their links along with it. Apparently, those that install it directly from Microsoft have very little problems except for getting used to how it works. Some say it's better, some say it's not. I choose to not upload it again unless I have too. Progress doesn't necessarily mean Progress.... Quote
Lightninrod Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 OK, I give up. How do I check which version I have installed? Avid: Mine has a dark blue banner at the very top of each page that says "Internet Explorer 7". Dan Quote
Super User senile1 Posted November 13, 2006 Super User Posted November 13, 2006 OK, I give up. How do I check which version I have installed? Click the help menu and then "About Internet Explorer" or if its Firefox, do the same but the wording is "About Mozilla Firefox." Quote
GAMEOVER Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 My wife uses it, I upgraded it for her. All problems with IE7 are always being worked out.. Me? I use Opera.. IE believe it or not is more secure then Fire Fox.. Fire Fox is open source, open source gives you more freedom but also gives others more freedom to attack you. To clear up the topic starting post.. you can NOT uninstall any version of IE because its an actual part of your Windows system. IE7 or not your stuck with it on your system but not forced to use it. Tom Bass Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 OK...and Thanks. By the way, IE7 is no longer part of my complete breakfast.....It's not in my system. It's Gone. Bye Bye....Won't be back unless I let it. But, Thanks. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted November 13, 2006 Super User Posted November 13, 2006 Yes, you can uninstall IE from your machine. It just disappears from your add/remove programs in control panel after service packs are added on 2000, and it disappears if you removed the old version when you updated. Read the following if you need to uninstall IE on your machine and can't find it in add/remove programs. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293907 Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 Thanks Pard, but I like IE6. Thanks for the link. Tom Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 14, 2006 Super User Posted November 14, 2006 We received a e-mail at work saying not to upgrade to IE-7. It seems some of the older programs do not work well with it. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 23, 2006 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 23, 2006 Seems at least one person using IE7 (from AOL) is now having problems with menus at the very top of the pages here. Anyone else with IE7 seeing the same thing? I think the net/net here is to wait until the first service patch is released before downloading it. Seems with most softward, the service patches fix all the bugs that should have been fixed before releasing it. Quote
Guest avid Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Thanks Senile and lightning rod. I didn't have the banner that LR spoke of , but when I clicked on "about" it clearly stated IE6 I see no reason to upgrade to an "iffy" program. iE6 works fine for me. keeping it real. avid Quote
