BassKing813 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I need some more advice. Normally I ride home from school with two girls, but on the days they go to the gym I can't get a ride. I used to have to ride the bus, but lately I have been getting a ride with one of my other friends. The only problem is he speeds like crazy and it freaks me out. The speed limit on all the roads we go down is 45, and my friend goes 70 (even in my neighborhood of 25mph speed limit he goes 40mph)! I'm really afraid he's gonna wreck, and at that speed it could be very serious and probably life threatening. What should I do? I hate riding the bus and I don't feel comfortable asking him to do the speed limit (or at least keep the speeding down to 10 over) because he is doing me a favor by taking me home. I really feel I should find someone else to take me home or ride the bus, but the bus ride is really bad. On the one hand, the chances of wrecking aren't too high because it doesn't happen too often, but on the other hand it could get me paralyzed for life or dead if we do crash. I think it's rude to comment on his driving, but do you think I should consider talking to my friend? Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 14, 2006 Super User Posted November 14, 2006 Your friend is just plain wrong no matter how you look at it, the speed limit is there for your, his and other people 's safety. The highway patrol or the police don 't place those limits "just because", they are there for a reason and the most common one is that the road is not for higher speeds. With friends like those and you riding in their car you don 't need enemies. You don 't need "favors" from someone that doesn 't respect his safety, not to mention other 's safety including your own. Take the bus. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 take the more political approach and ask him politely to slow down. With the political approach and he is a good friend he will slow down. If you calculate the time difference you gain against the ticket you get.(leaving out wrecks/killing someone) its not worth it. NJfishinGuy Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 id ask him, im blunt with my friends if i dont like somethin i tell them. just be like dude u need to slow down and chill. hell probably say oh dont worry about it always drive like this there nuttin to worry about, then you say well just slow down anyway man no need to be goin nuts. Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 14, 2006 Super User Posted November 14, 2006 One question . Why do you put your self in a situation you are uncomfortable with ? Quote
JiggaMan512 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 ill go one step further with my advice. buy my car. please! Quote
edbassmaster Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 try saying something casual like " dude, your gonna kill someone driving like that " or " arent you worried about gettin a ticket dude" or if you were me youd ride the bus!! Quote
carySE406 Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 I would just constantly say "look out a cop"! And then he would finally get the point. I have a friend like that too, except he has a $400 radar detector and has never got a ticket. Quote
fishingrulz Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Tell him to slow down. Its called a speed limit for a reason. Then again...and this may be crappy advice but this is the most logical thing I can come up with right now. You know whats right, its easy for us to sit here and tell you what to do because we don't have to deal with the peer pressure and all that junk. Tell him to slow down. If he doesn't just don't go with him. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Speak up. If he truly earns the label of "friend", it shouldn't be a problem. Quote
Top Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 my question is... why aren't you going to the gym??????? ;D AL Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Maybe if your friend got a ticket he would learn to slow down. The fines and cost of insurance would surely get his attention. Unfortunately, this is the only way some people learn. Quote
pickerelpiney Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 how would you react in anyother life threatening situation. fight or flight. hes doing something that could kill you, get aggressive and tell him to knock it off or your gonna bust his face in. Quote
Guest avid Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Im with NJfishinguy on this one. I wouldn't worry about his feelings, just tell him to slow the f*** down. I too am blunt with my friends. Hell, I have to be tactful and politically correct with strangers not friends. PS> That's not to say he won't be blunt with you and tell you to walk. Be prepared for that. Personaly, I would walk. If I want a thrill ride, I'll go to an amusement park Quote
tbird Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Young drivers know everything there is about driving so I think it is a moot point to point out he is drivng too fast (official term ,macho drivus) Either go with the chicks in the gym or find another ride , read the paper they are full of fatal statisics like your buddy. Super User cart7t Posted November 16, 2006 Super User Posted November 16, 2006 Not to take this to far off topic but why is it that students today, especially later teens, don't want to ride the transportation system provided to them by the school district (bus)? ;} grandpa glasses on{; A better question is this, when exactly did it seem to become a childs right to drive a vehicle to school instead of taking the transportation provided by the district that Mommy and Daddy are paying for via taxes? These days, as long as a kid has a car, he can apply for a parking permit and drive to school. I don't understand, it seems to me that should be a "priviledge", not a right and one that's earned either through outstanding grades or a work release program where the child is working in a program RELATED to a field of study he or she is partaking in. In my day it was only those that had a course related job that had the priviledge to drive to school Everyone else took the bus. I see no reason to change that. ;}/ grandpa glasses off ;{ BTW, take the bus if this Mario Andretti wanna be doesn't wanna slow down. One of these days he's going to speed into a situation where he runs out of talent and you're going to be the one that pays for his lack of responsibility. Quote

Super User Raul Posted November 16, 2006 Super User Posted November 16, 2006 My Friend Is Gonna Kill Me Yes, he is going to kill you, not for telling him he 's a reckless driver. Quote

BassChaser57 Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 You sound like you have good sense--USE IT!!! I have seen way tooooo many great young people dead trying to be cool. If that voice inside you is screaming at you---DO THE RIGHT THING!! Ask him to slow down or you have no choice but to save your life and ride that %&$^#&*() bus. You will find in life that doing the right thing is many times not the fun or cool thing, that is just the way it is. MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE---PLEASE!!! Good luck Quote
