timmyswetarded Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 alright so i have a 15 month old brittany that i got for upland bird hunting....she has a problem with running off and not responding to the "come" command. once she gets about 35 or 40 yards away and i tell her to come, she wont....then she just takes off...im not sure what to do because if i have her on the leash or inside and tell her to come she does it right away (i use a 25ft leash). my backyard isnt fenced in, and all the public fenced in areas that i know of are all "no pets allowed"....i do have an e-collar but i havent used it, we have done all of our training with a choke chain and check cord.....any advice on how to help cure this? its most likely something im doing wrong but i dont have the money to send her to a professional trainer. Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted November 12, 2006 Super User Posted November 12, 2006 I think the most important thing (got this from my trainer for my dog) is to only say the command once and then MAKE them do it. If you just start repeating come over and over and over again ..... everythinh you say becomes blah, blah, blah, blah. I would got back to the basics on a long leash. Do sit/lay down/stays with your 25 ft leash. Start off at short distances and then move to long distances, and then move to non-visual stay/comes (go to another room in the house or around the house outside). If the dog doesn't do it right, place them back where they should have been and do it over. Quote
Travlin_Man Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 A trick I learned training retreivers, call the dog's name and when they glance at you run away from them, They will usually chase after you. Also before the "work" of training begins, have a play time and lots of exercise so afterwards the dog will settle down and learn. Above all don't loose your temper and yell or threaten physical harm. This will set back the process considerably. Quote

I used to do that with one of my dogs but its not really correcting the problem, just changing it. the dog will think that it should begin chasing anyone who looks like they are running (i.e. joggers, etc.) how much exercise does your dog recieve from you on an average day? Tom Bass Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Dude, Have you tried Dog Training forums? Here are some that I found doing a yahoo search for you: http://www.dogforums.com/ http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php http://www.chazhound.com/forums/ http://www.dogdiscussion.com/index.php http://www.k9forums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=39 http://uplandbirddog.com/training/index.htm http://www.dogonpoint.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi http://p211.ezboard.com/bgundogandbirddogforums Cruise these and check out some answers. The last three are for hunting dogs. They are free. Don't be afraid to register and ask questions. In your last thread posting about your dog you were considering a shock collar. I am very happy that you didn't go that route but I am sorry to see that your dog is still a problem. Mine is too, by the way, Brittany's have a spirit that will drive you nuts! Good luck and don't kill the dog. Tom Quote
timmyswetarded Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 well i have some wonderful news....a guy my dad works with is real good with dogs and hunting dogs especialy anyways i have taken her over the past couple evenings and then today she spent the day at his house and he called me about lunch time and told me he had her in his front yard off the leash.....oh crap.....but she stayed with him and followed him...well he taught me a few key things, a check cord and whistle are invaluble and that she needs a HUGE amount of exercise.....more than i was giving her, so i went over there after school and sure enough she was doing good....now i just need to work with her everyday doing the drills he taught me.....it may just be that in a few weeks/months she'll be "cured" kinda....anyways im real happy and shes goin on her first quail hunt soon Quote
