BASS fisherman Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING? "Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand and "lollipop" with your right. (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn't you?) Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable. (I'll bet you're going to check this out.) No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple. "Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt". (Are you doubting this?) Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. The sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter of the alphabet. ( Now, you KNOW you're going to try this out for accuracy, right?) The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). (Yep, I knew you were going to "do" this one.) There are only four words in the English language which end in "dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous. (You're not doubting this, are you?) There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: "abstemious" and "facetious." (Yes, admit it, you are going to say ...... a e i o u) TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. (All you typists are going to test this out) All 50 states are listed across the top of the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the $5 bill. A dime has 118 ridges around the edge. A cat has 32 muscles in each ear. A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. (Some days that's about what my memory span is) A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes. A snail can sleep for three years. ( I know some people that could do this too.) Al Capone's business card said he was a used furniture dealer. Almonds are a member of the peach family. An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. Babies are born without kneecaps. They don't appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age. February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon. In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been domesticated. If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast, the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction. If you are an average American, in your whole life, you will spend an average of 6 months waiting at red lights. Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors. On a Canadian two dollar bill, the flag flying over the Parliament building is an American flag. Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite! Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated. The average person's left hand does 56% of the typing. The cruise liner, QE2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns. The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket. (Good thing he did that) The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid. There are more chickens than people in the world. Winston Churchill was born in a ladies' room during a dance. Women blink nearly twice as much as men. Now you know everything Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 10, 2006 Super User Posted November 10, 2006 A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes. Since shark are the only "fish" that can blink with both eyes no fish can blink with both eyes because sharks are not fish. The average person's left hand does 56% of the typing Not true, I only type with two fingers and both are on my right hand. A cat has 32 muscles in each ear. Not true, the number is 13: Scutoauricularis superficiales Scutoauricularis profundi Frontoscutularis Zygomatoscutularis Zygomatoauricularis Interescutularis Parietoscutularis Cervicoscutularis Cervicoauricularis superficialis Cervicoauricularis medius Cervicoauricularis profundus Styloauricularis Parotidoauricularis Babies are born without kneecaps. They don't appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age. False, the kneecaps are there, just they aren 't bone. Quote
carySE406 Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING? A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. (Some days that's about what my memory span is) Uh, Mythbusters had an episode on that and "proved" goldfish have pretty good memory spans. I dont know if I believe it, but it was a good episode nevertheless. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 Good job guys! How many more can you find? I'll give you a hint.... there are several more that are false. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 Americans on average eat 18 acres of pizza every day There are 293 ways to make change for a dollar A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why. Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks; otherwise it will digest itself. Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 11, 2006 Super User Posted November 11, 2006 With 300 million inhabitants I think that 183 acres of pizza a day is a little bit under what I assume it really is. About the ostrich........gee I don 't know, at vet school the only birds I learned about were chicken and turkey. In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been domesticated. That 's a tough one, because buffalo is used to create the BEEFALO ( hybrid between domestic cows and buffalo ) but domestication usually involves creating new breeds based on one animal species, tamed does not count as domesticated, so from that point of view buffalo are not domesticated but tamed. Super User Dan: Posted November 11, 2006 Super User Posted November 11, 2006 "door hinge" rhymes with "orange" it's not one word, but usually the rule of rhyming is that both words have to have the same number of syllables, so it doesn't really matter. Quote
earthworm77 Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 I believe that a shark is indeed a fish...a whale is not a fish however. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 NAH a sports agent is a shark ;D Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 11, 2006 Super User Posted November 11, 2006 I believe that a shark is indeed a fish...a whale is not a fish however. Nope, vertebrates are divided in 7 classes: Cyclostomata ( lampreys ) Elasmobranchii ( rays and sharks ) Pisces ( fish ) Amphibia ( frogs, toads, salamanders, amphiuma ) Reptilia ( snakes and lizards ) Aves ( birds ) Mammalia: prototherians ( mammalians that lay eggs ).- platipus and equidna, metatherians ( non placentary mammalians, raise their offspring in a pouch ).- marsupials, metatherians ( placentary mamals ).- all the rest of the mammals So sharks are not fish, whales are mamals. The first two classes present a persistent anatomical structure called notocord which in the upper classes disappears during the embrionary stage because it becomes the spine at expense of the notocord. Guest avid Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid. Nope, I remember it well. The great depression was starving us out so my dad made a bet with a guy and threw me over the falls. I lived and he collected, but come to think of it I did bounce a few times ;D Quote
Super User senile1 Posted November 11, 2006 Super User Posted November 11, 2006 I read some things after I read your post, Raul. I know you're a veterinarian and you have studied a lot of this but are you quoting the classifications from when you went to school or are you quoting the way they are now. It seems there are a couple of different methods of classification used now, and there is some disagreement about the classification of sharks as well as other creatures. I know little about this since I haven't studied scientific classification since college (about 25 years ago.) For instance, I found this: Chondrichthyes are fish with the following characteristics: a skeleton made of cartilage, jaws, paired fins, and paired nostrils. Chondrichthyes are further divided into two subclasses: Holocephaii and Elasmobranchii. 1. The subclass Holocephaii includes fishes known as chimaeras. They are characterized by the fusion of the upper jaw and cranium (the part of the skull that encloses the brain), one pair of external gill openings, and no scales. 2. The subclass Elasmobranchii includes sharks and batoids. Elasmobranchs are characterized by cylindrical or flattened bodies, five to seven pairs of gill slits, an upper jaw not fused to the cranium, and placoid scales. According to the wording of this, sharks are fish. I found other information that opposed this view. Quote

phisher_d Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 On a Canadian two dollar bill, the flag flying over the Parliament building is an American flag. Nope, Canadian flag... but we don't even use two dollar bills anymore. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 I always thought a shark was a fish..... now i'm confused.... :-/ Do you know it costs 2 cents to make a penny? Quote
RandySBreth Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 "Few jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz " is the shortest sentence to contain all the letters of the alphabet, at least according to some book I read once. I don't know, I'm not young enough to know everything anymore. Quote
JiggaMan512 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Sequioa has all the vowels in it. Although it doesnt sound "english", it is in the English dictionary. Did you know that the founder of Dominoes was allergic to cheese? Did you know that on an average day, a security guard at the Mall of America walks about 8 miles? Quote
