BassKing813 Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Well, I have finally managed to loosen the bait monkey's evil grasp on me. I haven't purchased any fishing gear for TWO MONTHS! I think I am learning to save my money and manage it a lot better. Since I always buy new lures but only catch fish on the old ones, I have decided to focus on saving money to buy clothes and such for college. Even though I would like to buy more stuff, the reality is that my catch rates don't increase simply by spending $100 on new gear. I am doing quite well with what I already have. Just thought I'd let you all know. Once you get out of the habit, you will have a lot more money to spend on things you really need, and it will force you to learn how to use the lures you already have. Quote
Top Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 tsk tsk tsk... you are so nieve to believe such things... the baitmonkey has you FIRMLY in his grasp... he is just letting you save some money on the GUISE that you are going to buy clothes... just wait till you get a few hundred saved.. .then he will strike and make you buy that dream reel or rod... tsk tsk tsk no clothes for you my friend unless its wet weather gear to be used FOR FISHING AL Quote
BassKing813 Posted November 8, 2006 Author Posted November 8, 2006 Yeah, if I save a few hundred dollars I most likely will buy a new rod, but making a purchase every couple of months or so isn't nearly as bad as making a purchase every two weeks like I have done in the past. Quote
paparock Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 "I Have the Bait Monkey Under Control" Those are famous last words. :-/ Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 I Have the Bait Monkey Under Control Want to have that phrase carved as an epitaph on your graveyard stone ? :-? Quote
Guest avid Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 "I Have the Bait Monkey Under Control" Those are famous last words. :-/ You remind me of the alcoholic who says "I'm not an alcoholic, I haven't had a drink in two months." Two weeks later he wakes up in detroit wondering who he's sleeping with. Quote
BassKing813 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 You guys are just jealous because the Bait Monkey has you good. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go buy a swimbait. ;D Wait! Must. Super User Raul Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 Aha, so now I 'm guilty of you going to purchase a swimbait ? man, I just was pointing out you you were trying to deny an illness which has no known cure. Mailman arrived today, dropped box, in it: Daiwa Alphas Type F, Megabass bait X, Gan Craft swimbait, Daiwa Dead or Alive swimbait, LC Amago swimbait. I don 't even remember ordering that stuff :-?........now that 's really saaaaaad. :-X Quote
BassKing813 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 I have just hit the motherload of all online tackle stores. I just found Ichiban Tackle and they have the COOLEST lures. The Bait Monkey wins. By the way, has anyone had any experience with Ichiban Tackle? Is it a good place to shop? Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Good selection but,...no deals. Quote
Troutfisher Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Yeah, well, you guys can talk about online tackle all day, but I, I have the bait monkey under control... (Sees pack of Berkley GULP!) Must....not...buy..... Quote

Super User Matt Fly Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 I too have had the monkey under control, he and I have an understanding for the past few months. Our new BPS is opening this weekend 25 miles away. I know they will have big sales going on. He allowed me to save to get more bang for my buck. I loaned him to my daughter to tag along with her as she buys dear old Dad some stocking stuffers for Xmas already. I to have had the monkey under control, under his terms of course. Matt. Quote
Tom Bass Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I don't know about bait monkey "control" but I do know of one "deterrent".....Her name is Mary. She's my wife. ;D She can see by the look in my eyes that the bait monkey has me under his spell and she quickly snaps me back to reality. Oh, she is okay with me buying the stuff that I need but when she caught me fondling a Shimano Stella the other day she stepped on the bait monkey's tail and sent him packin'.....that reel sure would have looked real good on that G. Loomis rod that me and my bait monkey have been eyeing. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 My bait monkey and I have an agreement, we buy bulk and only things I need or might need. ;D Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 Suggestion: When you are reading through all the threads here at BassResource.com, keep a note pad handy and make a list of the specific lures that guys are having a lot of success with around here. When you are shopping, stick to your list and save some money by NOT buying all that other stuff that just "looks good." Unless someone recommends a lure that is just red hot, I'm not buying anything new until I use some of the "new" stuff I have had for a few years. My little niche seems to be collecting suspending jerkbaits. I really like this class of lures, but I don't really have that many opportunities to use them. I have a box of Lucky Craft Pointers in all three sizes, Husky Jerks, X-Raps, Smithwick Rattl'n Rogues and a few floating Rogues. If that's something like fifty lures, maybe ten have ever been wet. So, before I buy another color or try another brand, I'm going to try to fish some of the "new" ones I already have. Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 You mean kinda like recycling the lures you have purchased but never used ? :-? Tried that one.......it didn 't work either :, if I happen to find a new old lure really good then the cycle repeats itself again, gotta purchase "spares", just in case. :-X Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 9, 2006 Super User Posted November 9, 2006 Yeah, that's it...like four tires on your car and forty-six brand new spares! Quote

If I could do it all over again I would have 3/4 less stuff. Quote
Bassinfreak2 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Hey RW I will gladly take your "spares" and give em a good workout! LOL! I too have tons of jerkbaits but I use em a lot. Quote

How many packs of hooks you purchased not long ago ? : 3 packs* whats wrong with that? *(packs of 100 that is) ;D alot of those are already gone, divided between buddies. I need to rephrase my post to 3/4 less junk and 3/4's more stuff that I actually use Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 10, 2006 Super User Posted November 10, 2006 That sounds much better and in within more context. If I could turn back time ( and I ain 't singing ) to the days when I began to fish for bass knowing what I know now I bet I would have 80% less tackle than what I have. How come on any given day I fish with 2-3 cranks, a couple of spinnerbaits and just a few worms, catch fish and have fun ? What the heck is all that extra stuff doing in the boat ? Quote
