I'm not nor was I, but one of my best friends was.  The hell you guys go through.... just don't get it, but whatever.  All I really remember him doing was REALLY watching his salt intake.

yea it does stink because i used to eat a lot of salt, and greasy foods. but it really does feel good to be in shape and healty.

anyone got any tips or secrets on what i should eat? i want to wrestle 135 and i weighed in at 134.1 yesterday after pracitce but im sure i gained alot of weight back so i probalby weight close to 137 after drinking alot of water and eating

my friend went all state he used to run in sweets and then with a garbage bag like jumpsuite i guess a kid died doing this so its illegal but u sure as hell will make weight ;)

I use to box and more recently practiced MMA and trained boxers at my local gym. Most importantly is what you eat...not how much. I try to eat 4-5 " meals " a day. A basic rule of thumb for weightlifters or people maintaining a certain weight is for every pound of body weight you should consume 1 gram of protein each day. Its hard, but I do it at 165lbs. Eat alot of chicken breast, salmon, tuna, lean beef, BROWN rice, and broccoli. That is my staple diet. If I want to go up in weight...I increase carbs and take supplements like creatine. If you are weight training which most wrestlers do...consume at least 20 grams of protein immediately after lifting, this is critical. Protein speeds up muscle recovery. I also try to drink a gallon of water a day, this speeds up the breakdown of the protein. Remember to try to eat 4 to 5 times a day...here is my diet ( on good days ) 5 egg whites and dry wheat toast for breakfast...protein supplement for snack...tuna out of the can ( if you can stand it ) and two hard boiled eggs for lunch...protein supplement for snack...salmon filet, brown rice, broccoli and sweet potatoe for dinner and than a protein drink at night after I lift. This sounds hard but you get use to it and this will help you maintain weight. I hope this helped you, good luck!! P.S. stay away from those red bull type drinks...nothing but sugar and they dont really do anything except a 5 minute sugar rush.

Good advice above

I wrestled and played football in high school. Making weight was one of the toughest things I ever had to do in sports. I had to work my butt off just to get close to weight, and actually had to wear trash bags under my sweats and run in place on the bus all the way to the meet. After all of that I just barely made weight.  

You have it a bit easier than I did though. My natural weight puts me well into the heavyweight class, but the coaches wanted me at 189. Unfortunately this sapped a lot of strength out of me.

edbassmaster is definitely right on track. Follow his advice. With all the physical activity wrestling necessitates and with you being a young guy watching calories is not the most important thing. It's  what you eat. Avoid "white" foods white bread white rice white pasta etc. Eat lean meats. Keep protein high. Watch salt. Spacing out your food throughout the day keeps metabolism high.

1.  Stay away from the carbs.

2.  Drink a lot of water.

3.  Reduce your sugar intake to a very low, if zero, limit.

4.  Go with fish and lean meats and lean pork (avoiding honey-baked hams).

5.  Continue your veggies but stay away from apples, apricots, berries, cantaloupe, grapefrit, peaches and pears and their subsuquent juices

6.  Reduce your intake of diary and avoid yogurts, ice cream and whole or 2% milk.

7.  Eliminate all alcohol.

8.  Avoid beets, carrots, corn, potatoes (white and sweet) and yams.

9.  Avoid nonreduced fat cheeses.

10. Avoid chicken wings and legs, chicken skin (yum).

11.  Stay away from liver, fatty cuts of meat, ib steaks and brisket.

12.  Stay away from carbs.

When you reach your weight goal you can start adding these items back into your diet to see how they affect your weight.

Good luck and be very careful with your diet so you will not be dehydrated or lose muscle tone.

You are going to be fine. I am going to wrestle 125 this year (practice doesn't start for another week) and right now i probably weigh about 133-135.

In one practice i will usually lose about 2-3 pounds of water weight, over night you will lose on averge about 2 pounds. The main thing is watch what you eat and drink.

Pop=bad

candy=bad

chips=bad

water=good

salad=good, dressing=bad

thanks everybody great advice. i did really bad and ate a lot this weekend :-[, so im gonna have to really watch it but i think ill be fine as long as im hydrated.

i have heard about the 4-5 meal a day diet before. i heard this speeds up meatbolism. i started it but quit it a week ago, but it looks like i need to do it again

my breakfast has been a bananna and ocassionaly a wheat bagel and skim milk

are pineapples or banannas good? thats been pretty much my lunch at school excpet for a small piece chicken

for dinner, my dads a big griller, so he usually grills me about a 6oz steak or chicken or fish. grilling sweats alot of the fat out.

and for my 4th meal i though about bringing like a small bag of grapes to school and eating them during second period

how does this sound?

Ive read in some health mags that a banana may be one of the best foods you can eat if you could only eat one food...a large banana even has 2 grams of protein as well as vitamins a,b, and c, is low in sodium and has 36g of carbs, the perfect snack...I've read that the darker grapes are better and they are anti-carcinogen ( I think thats the word ) which means they are heart healthy and anti-cancer!! I have about three years worth of muscle and fitness, mens health, and my best freind is a personal trainer and power lifter, thats how I learned this stuff. Back to fruits...the fruit is better than the fruit juice!!

I wrestled 135 in high school, youre best friend is now a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt.  Work your butt off at practice, dont lose your sweat.  My coach always told us you can eat about anything reasonable but drinks are what will kill you.  I never had a soft drink the four years i went to high school because of that.  Like i said you can eat about anything within reason, because you mostly wanna lose water weight.  Now if its a night before a tourney or before a match eating anything will obviously add weight, so eat light in those times. Your enemy right now is sodium, definitely avoid anything with a high sodium content.

Oh another thing, never dont eat to lose weight.  That kills your metabolism, eat little meals to keep your metabolism up. So then you will be burning more then you take in. Otherwise you dont burn anything, and that gets you nowhere.

I was a wrestler for a lot of years. Maintaining weight is just plain tough. We used to run and practice in rubber lined, plastic sweatsuits, which I'm sure are probably outlawed by now. We'd spit into coffee cans, workout in the boiler room, take caffeine pills, laxatives, roll ourselves up inside a wrestling mat, anything to sweat off that last half pound.

In college we did even worse. We cheated. If I new I was going to be overweight, I'd put my hands together behind my back and my buddies would gather in close to watch the scale, then one of them would push up slightly on my hands.

I dropped way too much weight in high school, mostly because I thought I'd be more successful against smaller guys...but it didn't always work like that, and throughout the season I would actually lose muscle. If it's easier to make weight in February than it is in November, you're losing muscle.

At NMSU we had trainers test our body fat % and our coach would help us determine the where we should wrestle. It still wasn't easy to make weight, but at least we weren't doing more harm than good.

Please find your ideal weight, then get professional advice on maintaing it...and good luck this year!!!

any high school or former high school wrestlers out there? if so i would like some advice to maintain my weight
If I remember correctly you are from Western NC. What High School do you go to? I wrestled at Tuscola High and at UNC Pembroke. I also coached at Waynesville Junior High (Waynesville Middle School) Losing weight is simple, eat less and excercise more. Nothing else really works. A bunch of  small  balanced meals is best. If you starve yourself it will shut down your matabolisim and keep you from losing weight so you have to keep eating but eat smaller portions. When I was in College I never had a problem keeping weight since I worked out so hard and had good balanced meals. In high school I had a slack coach my last two years and nobody on my team to push me good in practice so I just decided to wrestle over my normal weight until the end of the season so I could maintain my muscle through the season and lose the weight slowly.

Best thing to do is get your weight down by losing FAT to right at the weight you want to be at so before practice you weigh 135. Then you can lose the water weight during practice the night before a match where you are going to have to make weight so you are under the weight you need to make. Then weigh all your food and water intake between the time of the last practice and the match so you cant be over but still have enough food and water to maintain your strength. It sounds crazy but it works since you cant gain anymore than you take in. It used to work for me but I looked like a drug dealer carrying a scale with me in my backpack to weigh my food. ;D

plus we have to take a hydration test to make sure we are hydrated

Drill, drill, drill.  Drill moves over and over again so that they become second nature to you.  On the mat you can't think, you just got to react and drilling moves will help you react better and quicker.

A lot of people will tell you wrestling is not a team sport, but it definitely is.

You've probably noticed that most really good teams usually have a cluster of guys at similar weights that are all very good. Those guys became good because they were able to push each other hard in practice, in the weight room, and at summer tourneys. The only way to improve is to constantly challenge guys who are as good as or better than you are. Beating a weak opponent doesn't teach you anything. Losing a tough match to a better opponent is a great motivator. You'll get better, and as you improve, your team will get better.

Also, on meet days, run through the matches in your head over and over again. Imagine every possible scenario from start to finish.

If you practice hard, and prepare mentally, you will step on the mat with confidence.
