How to fish an X-Rap.

Hey there,

I'm a silly newb to fishing and was wondering how you're supposed to fish a Rapala X-Rap.  Do you just cast and retrieve?  Stop and go?  Walk-the-dog?

I sure will appreciate your responses.  Thanks in advance.

The X-Rap is a jerkbait and the pause is what counts.

I usually don't fish this way. I fish it the same as a jerk bait rather than a slash bait.

Terminology.

A "slash bait" might imply faster action. They are slightly different, but not significantly. All lures have different action, the X-Rap is very quick. Sometimes that might be important, but it's just like the subtle differences in any other lure category.

BTW,

Last September I had my best day ever, in terms of numbers, fishing the original X-10 in white. Seven bass in ten casts, fourteen in an hour. Last summer I had my best day ever on the White River, fishing at night for German brown trout, X-10 rainbow trout pattern.

Is it just me or is this bait low on the list of great suspending jerk baits?

I catch fish on pointers and live pointers all the time, cant catch a cold on an xrap.

My impression of the bait is that it is around number two or three in the mainstream market, below Lucky Craft and maybe the Husky Jerk. Thats the way it sounds to me, but as you know...JMHO.

As soon as my jeckbait box is stuffed full of lucky crafts i'm giving my x-raps to the junior bass club.  It's just a confidence thing!!!!!! Why fish a x-rap when you own pointers?

i like my X-rap..caught quite a few fish on the copper color(forget its actual name from Rapala).  The trick, IMO, is fishing them considerably faster and more aggressively than you would a normal jerkbait.  My pauses aren't as long and its more or less like retrieving a crankbait in a very herky-jerky fashion...almost non-stop, quick, and violent almost.

yeah, work the x-rap faster than a normal jerkbait. I use them after the water warms up but I still want a jerk bait. Only pause as long as it takes to reel up the slack. Great bait.

Another tip you might want to try is to try and get the lutr to spin around 180 and look at the fish. Most good jerkbaits can do this if the right action is imparted in the lure and the x-rap does it real well. The key is to twitch the lure and then immediately throw slack back into the line...so it basically is a twitch from 9 oclock to 6 oclock and then move your rod tip back up to 9 oclock really quickly. Hang on because they will try and rip the rod from your hands.

I own several Pointers, including their original counterpart from Japan, the B'Freeze. Fine jerkbaits indeed, however when fishing water in the low 50's I do well with jerkbaits period.....doesn't matter whether it's a Pointer, X-Rap, Husky Jerk or Rogue. It's the presentation that is effective, not the particular lure - in my opinion.

Personally I can't catch much of anything on these when worked slowly or methodically or with longer pauses. there are much better baits out there for that. This bait excells when fish very fast and snappy. Sometimes with very hard rips even with very short pauses. many times i fish it with a lot of slack in the line as well and twitch it hard and really get it dancing. Nothing works all the time but if the mood of the fish is right you can have the time of your life fishing these and really trigger some ferocious reaction bites!! If you start getting them while burning spinnerbaits,burning cranks or traps,then it's usually a good bet that you can hammer them on an x-rap pretty well!

I have to agree with Crestliner, I've caught alot of bass on the Xrap, Silver/black, Clown & on the Pointer, when the water is really cold, long pauses is the way to go, as long as 25-seconds, also agree with Phanchise, jerk it from 9 to 6. and as long as the line isn't to heavy it will turn. Love to see those smallies come rocketing in from nowhere to grab it. It's all about the presentation.
