Tpayneful Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 I stand corrected in my Bass lure name geekdom. You are correct about the Bronzeeye. But I will match you in your failure to recognize the Horny Toad and Ribbit as SOFT body FROGS! ***.com......the all knowing online retailer lists them as FROGS! To settle the tie for geeked out bass angler we will have to have a name that lure contest in the basement of the science building ;D I hook fish just fine on my SPRO frog.....bass hits the lure......count to one.....reel down......set the hook. Works most of the time for me Quote

To settle the tie for geeked out bass angler we will have to have a name that lure contest in the basement of the science building ;D The tackle dealers will go wherever we anglers lead them, but they're often guilty of not paying attention. Zoom claims that their Trick Worm floats, but mine sink. Strike King calls the Z-Too minnow a slow sinker, but mine float! In the main, soft-plastic topwaters with a "solid" body are referred to as "toads", while soft-plastic topwaters with a "hollow" body are normally referred to as "frogs" (regardless of the distributor's handle). With regard to hookup ratio, provided all things are equal (angler, rod, line ~), I've found that the toads tend to hookup better than the frogs, but both are a BLAST! Roger Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 What frog has the highest hookup ratio? That would depend on whose rod they are attached to IMO there is alot of truth there. I've fished several frogs and my favorite is the bronzeye. But I've found what really increased my hookups wasnt the frog it was the rod, line, and me. Quote
surfer Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Just to be clear. If you have only fished one frog, you have no comparison so don't feel you have to pick one if that is all you have fished. Thanks J I don't want to pick one, but I can't see the results unless I do. I think this pole has valuable information in it and I would like to be able to see the results without skewing the results with my 1 frog opinion. This frustrates me and I have said this on a few poles. So can someone please tell me the results so I don't have to bogart it? Quote

Works most of the time for me LOL You are right technically. I mean what is the chance that a bass would eat a toad? Toads stay in the woods and frogs swim. What is up with that? ;D I realize that the difference in name is to distinguish the different types. I absolutely agree with everyone that the hookups depend very much on the angler, the other gear and the circumstances. However, all other things being equal, all of the frogs are not. I have in my possession a Swamp Donkey, two Bronzeyes, a Deps Basirisky and three Sumo frogs. All are different in more than one aspect. The Deps is very soft. The Bronzeeye is harder with a small hook gap. The Sumo is even harder but has a seemingly larger hook gap. The Swamp Donkey is unusual as all get out. Very soft body, huge hooks, weird finish. Saying that all are equal is a copout (pardon me for pointing that out). I doubt very much that anyone here has tried all of them and found all of them to be equal. Next thing we know, Lucky Crafts will be the same as Bandits. : J Quote

snyper77 Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Scum frog. Simply awesome. And I see many people here agree with that answer. If you don't fish a Scum frog, you're missin' out. Quote
Big-O Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I think that the answer is "whichever frog that is allowed the time for the fish to load up on it", considering it has the right hook, the right line, the right rod and the right hook set behind it. Beyond that jibberish, I think all of todays frog baits have there right place and time. www.ragetail.com Quote
mike bat Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 id be willing to bet most here are haveing trouble with the hook set .... ive been there and done that .... hence the reason i say ,,, most dont set the hook right .... or dont have the right gear to fish a frog .... this frog fishing does take tweeking to get it down .... every thing from rod to reel to line .... it all plays a part .... then once you get that tweeking down its time to get the hookset down ... im no expert but as of the end of last season i missed verry few bass .... in fact all of last seaon i may have lost or missed 5 bass that really hit my frogs .... the first thing i will say ,,, if your frogging with a flipping stick ... get a frog rod ... when you buy one get one that is crisp and fast .... im not tryin to bash a co but stay away from the loomis frog rod unless your fishing crankbaits LOL ... the reason i say no flipping stick is because there just too bulky to truly get that quick hook set you need half the time ... im sure you could catch a few with the flipping stick but you will miss just as many ... for line i use 50lb braid ,,, nothing else .... for reel get a burner ,,, brand doesnt matter ... just make sure you can pick up the line in a heart beat ... last the frog ,, i use spro and i will tell you there isnt a better frog out there .... if you have the grear and the hookset down the spro will hook them .... i do fish frogs 90% of the time from mid june through early fall .... our lake become slop holes by june so once i see it on top i have my frogg ... surfer Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I fixed it.J Thanks J I was thinking the poll should automatically be viewable so that people don't bogart the results with uneducated voting just to see the results. I don't think the author should have to make an extra vote spot for the uneducated vote to not be tallied or needlessly tallied. I have used the spro a little bit, but i have other top water lures that work so good in slop that i never bother throwing frogs much. Spro is the only one I have and I have caught the 1 bass that hit it. I am sure i would catch many more if I used it more. Quote
